Interdisciplinary Perspectives into Roman Commerce, Economy and the Acquisition of New Tastes during the Roman Period from the 4th Century BC Onwards

    29th EAA Annual Meeting

From the 4th century BC onwards, the expansion of the Roman Empire, eventually, over large parts of Europe had a significant impact on society. The creation of a new transport network and the emergence of cities were two of the most important and lasting changes brought about. As Rome expanded and developed contacts with other cultures far beyond the Mediterranean, new tastes and social practices were also acquired, often manifested in material culture. This session aims to explore Roman commerce and economy through different lines of evidence (e.g. archaeobiological remains, ceramics, inscriptions, landscape archaeology etc.). In addition, it aims to investigate the role of the ancient transport network in the process of urbanisation and/or the acquisition of new ‘tastes’.

Horses for whom. Military and agricultural interests in equine breeding during peacetime (1700-1900)

Sixth biennial conference of the European Rural History Organization (EURHO)

This session suggests to examine the relationship between armies and livestock, a topic that has been largely neglected by both military and agricultural scholars. In most cases, this relation was confined to the requisition of livestock for slaughter, for the hauling of artillery and other transport services during conflicts. Whatever the links between farming and military institutions, from 18th to 20th century the beginning of a major transformation of husbandry in general occurred. In the 19th century even States and military authorities began to pay systematic attention to livestock. Likely, the equine sector, saw the emergence, during peacetime, of institutions to increase the stock of animals available in the event of war and to improve their quality. The same period saw the first initatives aimed at the improvement of animals for civilian uses

    Understanding Gradients of Political Engagements

Citizenship and Identity in South Asia

Historian and political scientists of South Asia have been dealing with the ascent of postcolonial state and the form of citizenships in South Asia. The meteoric rise of postcolonial theory, subaltern school of historiography to be precise made efforts in bringing the role of ideas and culture in shaping state, community and political narratives. Notwithstanding these insights still this literature failed to bring in one very important thing; a comparative lens to study informal politics in the region. The social transformation and process of democratization has appeared to be inching ahead across the region from Nepal to Bangladesh. Therefore, increasingly a cross country perspective is required combining interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies (qualitative, quantitative) to develop a comparative perspective of way social and cultural factors influence informal politics in South Asia.

Research in Medieval Studies - An International Meeting Series

The past decade has witnessed a marked increase in medieval studies. Younger scholars have, in general, benefitted from doctoral and post-doctoral funding, besides collective research programmes. This, along with the experience and know-how of established academics in countless departments around the Globe has helped to foster this renewal. Results have been ground-breaking in many topics. The Research in Medieval Studies (RiMS) is conceived of as an ongoing series of yearly meetings whose aim is to bring scholars of different academic and geographical backgrounds together to open, or otherwise continue and direct, historiographical debate on key issues in medieval studies, while helping to establish outstanding research that is both innovative and comparative.

Agrarian Modernization, a global transboundary process that generates local asymmetries

4th International Conference of the European Organisation for Rural History (EURHO)

This panel wants to analyze the technology transference during Agrarian Modernization and point its inpact at the socio-environmental level from a comparative and connected global perspective. The geopolitical context and the social reality of the different regions where it expanded were quite different, as well as the interest of local elites. Therefore, the effects of this cultural and technological package differed according to the diverse geographical, environmental, economic and social particularities where it spread. Although this process has allowed the connection between the spaces of production and consumption, it ignored local particularities. And had and enormous social cost, as broad rural sectors have been excluded and have become urban poors.

Rethinking the Technical and the Human in Global Connectivity

We invite contributions for our Workshop “Rethinking the Technical and the Human in Global Connectivity”, happening at Humboldt University Berlin, 24-25 May 2019. The materiality of technologies and infrastructures is significant; however, we think their impact on and interaction with societies has to be analysed in a global dimension as well. We hope to establish this approach for the broader field of African History, reacting and bringing attention to a growing interest in these questions indicated in a number of recently developed research projects and publications.

Cultivating, minimising and preventing: strategies for handling the risk-idiosyncrasies in agricultural production

Workshop for the symposium "Coping with risks in agriculture. What challenges and prospects?"

Agricultural activities are particularly risky for a variety of reasons. Firstly because they are mostly exposed to constant but unpredictable weather and climate changes. Secondly, demand and price-decision mechanism for agricultural products depend on a complex mix of state and market influences hardly susceptible by the individual farmer. And, thirdly, agricultural producers are by definition constantly creating new risks themselves through their economic activities of using biotic resources (plants, animals) which are re-produced in the process of production. The aim of the workshop is to stimulate the reflection on the topic of the Symposium by identifying, exploring, contextualising and historicising in exchange with the participants of the workshop the great variety of risks, their conceptualisation and their handling in the agricultural sector in the period from the second half of the XIXth to the early XXIth century.

Modernisme et Ruralité : un point sur l'état des recherches (EAHN 2018 - Tallin)

5eme rencontre international du Réseau Européen d'Histoire de l'Architecture, à Tallinn, juin 2018

This session aims to address, from a historical perspective, the relation between, on one side, architecture and the related disciplines, and on the other side, agriculture and rurality at large. We welcome proposals specifically mapping case studies concerned with large-scale agricultural development and/or colonization schemes conceived and (but not necessarily) implemented in Europe and beyond during modern times (late 18th-20th century), strongly connected to nation- and State-building processes, and to the modernization of the countryside. We are particularly interested in those examples which aimed to “make the difference” in both scale and numbers, entailing radical reshaping of previously uninhabited or sparsely populated areas into new, planned, “total” rural landscapes.

Formal and informal networks of migrant women and men in settlement process (14th-19th centuries)

Panel at the European Social Science History Conference (ESSHC)

It aims to bring together scholars working on migration and settlement dynamics, by focusing on the extension and quality of relationships that newcomers could develop in the new environment and by highlighting differences between men and women. In addition it aims to investigate how these ties influenced, successfully or not, their settlement process: the daily life, the research of a job or a house, the access to credit networks, to poor relief or to other urban resources etc...
