Building Peace: Transitional Justice in the Early Modern World

How to reconcile former enemies in the wake of civil conflict and prevent a return to violence? Transitional justice has become a ubiquitous concept for understanding peacebuilding in the modern world. This conference approaches the early modern period as a particularly productive field for the wider study of peacebuilding and transitional justice. How exactly did post-war societies before the modern age deal with the challenge of peacebuilding? What particular transitional justice strategies did they develop? And how effective were they in achieving peace and reconciliation, either on a local or national level? As such, this conference aims to evaluate how the study of transitional justice can reshape our understanding of the early modern world – not just as a period of incessant conflict, but also a laboratory for peacebuilding efforts.

Living apart together? The troubled and treasured relationship between nature and human beings in art 1789-1914

European Society for Nineteenth-century Art Conference 2024

With the growing realisation that nature and the earth’s climate are at risk of being destroyed, this conference aims to centralize the interconnectedness between nature and human beings, by analysing the depiction of their relationship in Western-European art, including the effects of colonialism, during the long nineteenth century. This conference centralizes the depiction of the troubled relationship between nature and humans, both around the corner as well as overseas, including the fascination for non-indigenous flora and fauna. It aims to answer questions such as: Did changing opinions on nature have effect on nineteenth-century art? Did nineteenth-century art have effect on the changing opinions on nature? How was the relationship between nature and human beings depicted? Which role did the advent of working en plein air play in artists’ bond with nature? Which role did ecology play in the depiction of nature? How did artists and critics manage to evoke their awareness of the changing attitudes towards nature in their work? Which role did colonialism play in artists’ perception of nature?

Strengthening libraries emergency preparedness and response

As we move our efforts in conservation towards giving a sustainable dimension to our practices, risk preparedness is a critical part of the use of our heritage. In a context of multiple conflicts and climate change, libraries, archives and museums from around the world are facing disasters including earthquakes, fires, floods and man-made destructions. They highlight the potential severity of the challenges in emergency response situations. The World Library and Information Congress satellite meeting is initiated with the aim to provide practical information and tools based on recent experiences and learning points for the risk assessment and mitigation, response and recovery phases.

Thinking in the box: The benefits of artistic tradition in the Nineteenth Century

This conference invites papers that consider artistic tradition not as the nemesis of creation but in its own right. It aims to examine the potential artistic, commercial and even political benefits of thinking in the box—of continuing artistic tradition(s), working within them or reverting to them during the (long) nineteenth century. What could tradition yield for artists and the way they understood their art that innovation could not? What could it do for audiences and what they might have sought in artworks? What could it achieve for patrons, with their various social, political and aesthetic agendas? We invite papers that deal with the “problem” of tradition in nineteenth-century art, but which do not address the phenomenon itself as a problem. We especially welcome proposals that explore or develop new theoretical paradigms to study the relationship between nineteenth-century art and artistic tradition.

    Frictions and friendships

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century

The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

Counter-revolution and the making of conservatism(s)

Transnationalism and the circulation of conservative ideas from the mid-17th century to the First World War

With the rise to prominence of conservative ideologies across the Western World, studying the genesis of “anti-modern” European traditions has gained new urgency. The conference aims to sketch of a typology of modern conservative thinking based on the notions of dialogue and circulation between European intellectual centres and their peripheries, Enlightenment philosophy and conservative thinkers, and the various actors involved in the process. It will further discuss the long-term transformation of conservative ideas and rhetoric through the lense of transnational connections, against nation-centric studies of conservatism in which supra-national exchanges are often hidden by structural discourses.

In this context, the CENTQUATRE in Paris and the JAN VAN EYCK ACADEMIE in Maastricht therefore invite artists from all disciplines who are interested in the link between art and archeology, to apply for residency in their buildings.
