Imago, Actus et Verbum. Challenges and Questions in Medieval Studies
A crossdisciplinary dialogue between philology, philosophy, history, art and literature
On the outset of the 21st century, cross-disciplinary studies on the Middle Ages seem to be in need of a careful reconsideration of their nature, scope and aims. This is specially so after the series of "turns" undergone by historiography in the last four decades. Despite their differences, philosophy, history, philology , literary studies and art are also bound through their work on texts; and all are currently faced with both methodological and substantive issues raised by important shifts in contemporary society. This congress is devoted to a global assessment of the current state of affairs in medieval studies, but also the upcoming challenges.

The conference “Other times, Other Spaces” explores history (time and space) as something in constant transition, something in the making here and now. The world has witnessed wars, pandemics, and natural and man-made disasters. Today, we are more than ever threatened by climate change, depletion of resources, devastating pandemics, and disparities between the rich and the poor, North and South and West and East. The fears of the past are haunting the present, our here and now. Radical transformations are taking place across the world. Human relations are atomized, fragmented, alienated, and yet, paradoxically, consolidated by disasters and calamities such as the current Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, our perceptions of the world and humanity are being rethought and reshaped every day.

Envisioning Latin America: Power and Representation in audiovisual (re)productions
Forma Revista d'Estudis Comparatius. Art, Literatura, Pensament
This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.

The Presence of America in Madrid
Art, Images and Material Culture in Transit
As is well known, during the Early Modern period, hundreds of objects, artworks, painted and illustrated documents and manuscripts were sent from the Spanish viceroyalties in America to Iberian Spain. This circulation has been the object of renewed academic interest in recent years. In response to this trend, it seems necessary to better understand the particular place that Madrid, as both city (villa) and court (corte), occupied within this broader phenomenon. We invite proposals based on original research that can contribute to advancing the current state of knowledge and explore new questions and theoretical frameworks for our better understanding of these unique objects and works of art.

The paradigm of antiquity in the arts at the Villa
The establishment of humanistic culture in Italy led to one of the richest seasons in Villa architecture and a profound process of transformation of the idea and the function of the garden, in which antiquity was the absolute protagonist. The roots of this development date back to the second half of the fifteenth century, as is clearly demonstrated by Leon Battista Alberti, in the preface to his De re aedificatoria: "Our Ancestors have left us many and various Arts tending to the Pleasure and Conveniency of Life".

The arts in power
Nero and Hadrian: two emperors united by a passion for the arts; both reformers in the artistic and also, in particular, in the architectural and administrative spheres. Two characters, the first much discussed, the second much less. Recent critics have portrayed them in an innovative and pioneering light, at least from a purely cultural point of view.

Cultural coordinates in present-day museology
Five neologisms
The International Conference Cultural Coordinates in present-day museology: Five neologisms is aimed at research that focuses on analysing the contemporary museological discourse and its effects on cultural communication. Numerous questions arise, for example, regarding curatorial practices, the new formulas of knowledge transmission, museology’s potential contributions to social cohesion, the mediation made possible by the new technologies and the critical contribution to be expected concerning issues such as gender demands, environmental sustainability and others. The sections are headed by the corresponding neologisms into which the themes that are the subject of debate and analysis are divided.

Las Vanguardistas: Spanish Women Poets in Transnational Contexts (1920–1975)
Spanish avant-garde poetry has traditionally been associated with the “Generation of 1927”, a group of male poets that has dominated critical discussions of literary history for almost a century. Studies that have embraced the generational model have often considered the Spanish avant-garde either as a unique national phenomenon or as an imitation of foreign literary models. This special issue challenges these views by considering women’s participation in avant-garde circles in and beyond Spain and placing the Spanish avant-garde in a transnational context.

The glocalization of technocultures
Journal “Glocalism Journal of Culture, Politics and Innovation”
On the basis of examples informedby empirical material, this issue of Glocalism will re-examine the forms of technoculture(s) in the contextof globalization, their dynamics of glocalization and the ambivalent logics of the pressure to globalize despite localconstraints, the complex interactions between culture and technology, in a series of contexts with varying depths ofdigitalization of culture. This approach aims at locating at the forefront of the reflection the “local” forms and forces, particularly culturalones, that were previously questioned essentially from point of view of the globalization of Western technocultures. It will also nourish the debate on the consistency of the contested term “technoculture” and assess the relevanceof an approach in terms of glocalization.

Nouveaux mondes, anciens mondes, mondes perdus

Ordinary Oralities: Everyday Voices in History
Histories of voice are often written as accounts of greatness: great statesmen, notable rebels, grands discours, and famous exceptional speakers and singers populate our shelves. This focus on the great and exceptional has not only led to disproportionate attention to a small subset of historical actors (powerful, white, western men and the occasional token woman), but also obscures the broad range of vocal practices that have informed, co-created and given meaning to human lives and interactions in the past. The volume aims toward geographical and chronological breadth, from any region of the globe, from roughly the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Contributors to this volume seek out spaces and moments that have been documented idiosyncratically or with difficulty, and where the voice and its sounds can be of particular salience.

Historic Urban Landscape of European Cathedral Cities
Past Presencing. Public perceptions and understanding of the medieval city
The term cathedral city indicates an urban settlement that became an Episcopal see in Antiquity or early in the medieval period, and was developed during the 11th to the 15th century. These were formative centuries for European cities, during which a concentration of religious and secular powers and of social and economic forces shaped the form of the urban built environment and redefined its cultural meanings through social practices of space. The aims of this workshop are to discuss how the public of today, inhabitants and visitors, perceive and unserstand the medieval heritage (tangible and intangible) of European cathedral cities.

Norse Myths in the Artistic Reception
Scandia Journal of Medieval Norse Studies, 4, 2021
Norse myths represent one of the greatest cultural legacies from ancient Scandinavia. Throughout history, they have been perpetuated, re-signified and transformed by a great variety of artistic means, from their use on doors of Churches in the Middle Ages to modern depictions in today’s media. Some of our contemporary interpretations of such myths depend, to a greater extent, on different images that have been created in the past.

Celebrating the Illustrious in Europe (1580-1750)
Towards a New Paradigm?
The aim of this study day is therefore to review all the biographical productions of a period that has been little considered until now, in order to better understand how the modes of celebrating the glory of illustrious men were transformed between 1580 and 1750, both in writing and in images, by taking into account various media such as books, prints, paintings, sculptures and even medals.
