Whither the Spiritual? Rethinking Secularism’s Legacy in post-Ottoman Art
This dossier examines—and challenges—the implications of art history’s secular tilt—what Shaw has called an over-reliance on “Christian-based ideas of visuality” - on the study of modern and contemporary art from the Middle East. It aims to consider what new explorations in this field can offer for rethinking both art history and spirituality’s relationship to empirical argument and experience as cornerstones of modernity in a western modality.

Exploring Transnational Dimensions of Activism in Contemporary Book Culture
Mémoires du livre/Studies in Book Culture, vol. 26-2, Fall 2022
“A is for Activist” is the title of a best‑selling children’s board book, published in 2013 by Innosanto Nagara. This small book amplifies a large message: books can catalyze change. Publishing has both supported and hampered progressive political and social change, in a variety of international contexts. Activism in publishing is also transnational because national contexts and identities matter, but they exist within a transnational network with unequal power dynamics and “literary capital” (Casanova 2004). Building on ideas of “print activism” in the long twentieth century (Schreiber 2013), this special issue is dedicated to furthering our understanding of activism in the contemporary publishing industry – and in the research thereof.

To the rescue of minority groups. Gender, migration and racism in heritage and museums
The gradual transformation experienced by museums in the last few years has fostered the incorporation into exhibition spaces of social minorities hitherto barred from them due to their social invisibility, exclusion and marginalisation. Occidentalism and European-centred perspectives gave rise to decontextualised, distorted and racial exhibition criteria constructed from a biased view of otherness.

The imagination of the North in the arts

Religious applications and mediation

Interculturality, contemporality and interdisciplinarity in action: plural vision
Mashamba journal, volume 2, no.1 - linguisitics, literature, didactics in the African Great Lakes

Call for papers - Representation
The colloquium, nourished by a horizon of reflection calling upon the field of studies on rites, its different theoretical frameworks and anthropological and ethnological methodological approaches, will question the re-appropriations or creations of rites by and in contemporary artistic practices. The colloquium will discuss current research on contemporary artistic and artivist proposals for new forms of creative resistance and potential narratives as tools of emancipation. In this perspective, it aims to contribute to the renewal of critical approaches to the notion of ritual in the field of contemporary art.

Wonderment and aesthetics: the arts of enchantment

The Presence of America in Madrid
Art, Images and Material Culture in Transit
As is well known, during the Early Modern period, hundreds of objects, artworks, painted and illustrated documents and manuscripts were sent from the Spanish viceroyalties in America to Iberian Spain. This circulation has been the object of renewed academic interest in recent years. In response to this trend, it seems necessary to better understand the particular place that Madrid, as both city (villa) and court (corte), occupied within this broader phenomenon. We invite proposals based on original research that can contribute to advancing the current state of knowledge and explore new questions and theoretical frameworks for our better understanding of these unique objects and works of art.

Digital Platforms in the Global South
Shaping a Critical Approach
The social, political, economical and cultural issues raised by digital platforms are usually studied from the perspective of the North-American and West-Euiropean contexts, much less frequently from the perspectives of the Global South countries. This two-days workshop, held in English, aims at sketching out the state of research in this latter field and at exploring new avenues of research.

The paradigm of antiquity in the arts at the Villa
The establishment of humanistic culture in Italy led to one of the richest seasons in Villa architecture and a profound process of transformation of the idea and the function of the garden, in which antiquity was the absolute protagonist. The roots of this development date back to the second half of the fifteenth century, as is clearly demonstrated by Leon Battista Alberti, in the preface to his De re aedificatoria: "Our Ancestors have left us many and various Arts tending to the Pleasure and Conveniency of Life".

Critical perspectives of museography

Images and migrants in the Mediterranean
Education, medias and mediation

Conference, symposium - Representation
Representations and perceptions of natural risks
