Volume 5, number 2 of the journal (thematic issue) is scheduled for December 2023

Since the beginning of history, the Mediterranean has been the hotbed of endless conflicts. It is enough to note how the conquests of Alexander the Great, the Roman invasions and the crusades did not leave any respite to the In modern times, new wars have occupied the minds. The birth and expansion of the Ottoman Empire in southeastern Europe and the southern Mediterranean was the beginning of a series of conflicts that would persist until the he capture of Algiers in 1830 inaugurated the colonial wars of the contemporary era. France led a long conquest in Algeria with massacres and destruction of the rural population's means of life. During the two world wars, confrontations took place in Mediterranean cities, causing tens of thousands of deaths and cities thoroughly destroyed. Europeans tended to record a lot, often to the smallest detail, compared to North Africans and Orientals. The reasons for writing were not the same between one country and another and between one period and another. The military wanted to tell their experiences, their exploits and their suffering. Sometimes they were settling accounts or defending a thesis; sometimes they hoped, through their writing, to bounce back or regain a lost position.  One can find accounts of crimes committed on the population, assumed and justified, by its authors, without fear for possible prosecution. These documents were written during or after the war. Some of them were written in the middle of the battles, like the letters of Saint-Arnaud written on the spot after each confrontation with Algerians. The war affected all segments of society. Once peace was restored, civilians, from the administrative staff to the ordinary citizen, wanted to tell the story of the difficult moments they had lived in the midst of all kinds of deprivations. The doctor wrote about the difficulties of practicing his profession during the war, the worker recalled the fear of losing his job, the wife remembered the hunger and the wait for the return of her husband... Everyone in his profession and in his environment reported the good and the bad moments spent in the middle of the ruins.

The contributions of the researchers could include the following axes:

  • Presentation of a war story by a military or a civilian in the Mediterranean (modern and contemporary period).
  • War stories as a source of documentation for historians.
  • Various approaches to recounting a fact of war.
