Panel - Association for the Anthropology of Social Change and Development (APAD) Conference 2024
Panel - Colloque 2024 de l’Association pour l’anthropologie du changmement social et du développement (APAD)
Published on Wednesday, October 04, 2023
Abstract
This panel examines the meanings of work for migrants and people in mobility in a capitalist context. On the one hand, it will analyse the insertion processes and experiences of mobile people in the worlds of work (and labour markets), On the other hand, it will look at the mechanisms and actors involved in migrants’ professional integration, particularly in the South. How do migrants generate income in transit places or destinations, how do they live their daily work lives, and what are the social and power relations they are confronted with?

CfP for a panel - APAD 2024 International Conference "Through the lens of work:Capitalism, development, and social changein the global South" Liège, 22-24 May 2024
Presentation of the conference
The next APAD conference will be held in Liège, Belgium, from Wednesday the 22nd to Friday the 24th of May 2024. It proposes to analyse the dynamics of capitalism, development, and social change in the Global South through the lens of work. Work can be defined here as any activity contributing for the livelihood of individuals and groups. Far from being limited to salaried employment, it encompasses all economic practices, whether they participate to the sphere of production, exchange, or care. Using work as an analytical lens opens up a wide range of questions that touch upon – among others – the materiality of work and the use of technologies; the ethics of work and professional aspirations; work-related family configurations; social relations inside and outside work; careers and social mobility trajectories; gender, generational, class, and racial inequalities on the labour market; the forms of labour-value capture and processes of capital accumulation; or labour policies, and the dynamics of workers’ mobilization and representation.
The aim of the conference is twofold. On the one hand, it is to take a fresh look, from a work-centered perspective, at key themes in the tradition of APAD such as brokerage, political arenas, the functioning of state administrations, and the implementation of public policies. On the other hand, it is to open new avenues for studying development in its relationship with political economy and social change.
A total of 27 panels have been selected to make up the conference programme. You are invited to submit a paper proposal in one of these panels. Following a practice established in previous conferences, it is also possible to submit a paper proposal independently of the list of selected panels provided that it addresses one of the core themes of the conference:
- Set 1: Work and the worlds of development and humanitarian aid
- Set 2: Work and capitalism
- Set 3: Work and politics
- Set 4: Power relation at work

Presentation of the panel "Migrant work in the age of capitalism: insertions, daily life and professional sociability"
Migration and mobility studies give a great interest to migrants’ motivations, risks and pathways, and their transnational relations, particularly when it comes to South-North migration and South-South mobility. The experiences of people in mobility are rarely examined through the prism of work, whether formally employed or not, to which they remain connected through the exercise of various temporary or longer-term occupations. This is despite the fact that their presence in the productive sectors (agriculture, tourism, etc.) is well known, whether in the South or the North.
As part of Axis 2 of the conference, this panel will examine the integration of migrants, and more broadly of people on the move, into the formal and informal worlds (and markets) of work, both in transit areas and in places of destination. On the other hand, it will welcome papers on public policies or measures taken locally by government departments or private and associative actors to attract and promote the professional integration of foreign workers.
To what extent do people on the move fit into the economic fabric of transit and/or destination places? What are their activities for generating economic resources migrants are mainly involved in and what are the social and power relations they are confronted with in the worlds of work? In other words, what does work mean in a capitalist context, and how does it express itself for the migrant condition?
Participation modalities
The panel will focus on papers that:
- analyze the daily lives of migrants and mobile people through their occupations, physical work and work-related sociabilities
- examine the mechanisms and actors involved in the professional integration of migrants and mobile people, particularly in the South
The panel will result in a publication.
Paper proposals must be submitted on the APAD website (https://apad-association.org/) by the 15th November 2023.
