Abstract

This is the third in a series of study days dedicated to the history of precious ornaments in Europe since the Middle Ages. Favoring an interdisciplinary approach inspired by Aby Warburgh, specialists, historians and art historians, philologists, philosophers and gemologists, will share their groundbreaking research on the history of precious arts, gemstones, craftsmanship and finery, between Baroque and Rococo periods.

Presentation

On January 23 and 24, 2025, the Collège de France will host the third session of an art history seminar on precious ornaments: "Diffusion and Appreciation of Precious Ornaments and Jewelry in Europe between Baroque and Rococo (1650-1750)". The proceedings of Precious Ornaments 1, "Functions of Precious Ornaments in European Courts in the Late Middle Ages and during the Renaissance" were published in 2023. The proceedings of Precious Ornaments 2, "Precious Ornaments and Jewelry in the Art and Life of European Courts from the Renaissance to the Baroque Age" is being published.

The seminar is organized by Francesco Solinas, Associate Professor at the Collège de France, Marie-Laure Cassius-Duranton and Guillaume Glorieux, respectively Research Professor and Director of Education and Research at L'ECOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, with the support of Van Cleef & Arpels. This is a partnership between L'ECOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, the Collège de France, the CNRS and the ENS.

Participation

The Study Days will be broadcast live with simultaneous French-English translation on L'ECOLE website.

The proceedings will be published.
