Argument
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to our edited volume entitled "Intercomprehension Between Languages: Multidisciplinary Perspectives" to be published in Routledge Studies in Plurilingualism. This publication will be an innovative and pioneering contribution to the field of intercomprehension (IC) in English, offering an in-depth exploration of perspectives that have rarely been brought together.
Context and Aims of the volume
Intercomprehension, although rooted in ancestral communicative practices specific to border areas and contexts of language contact, has gradually emerged as a rich and multidimensional field of study. At the intersection of language research, plurilingual education, didactics, and teacher training, CI challenges current learning and teaching practices while valorizing pre-existing linguistic repertoires to decode unfamiliar languages.
This book aims to:
- Provide a comprehensive, up-to-date understanding of IC, addressing its theoretical, practical and pedagogical issues.
- Explore under-addressed issues such as societal responsibility and the implications of IC for language policy.
- Address a diverse English-speaking audience, including researchers, educators, policy makers, and training stakeholders, both novices and experts in disciplines such as applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, language education, and educational science.
Thematic areas
Contributions should fall into one of the following four categories
1. Intercomprehension and Society
Studies on the social implications of intercomprehension: international mobility, social justice, integration and language policy.
2. Intercomprehension and Education (beyond Europe)
Pedagogical approaches and educational initiatives related to intercomprehension in non-European contexts, with a particular focus on linguistic and cultural diversity.
3. Intercomprehension and Teacher training
Initial and in-service teacher training in the didactics of intercomprehension: necessary skills, pedagogical tools, challenges and opportunities.
4. Intercomprehension and Research
Theoretical and methodological contributions to intercomprehension research: interdisciplinary approaches, innovative corpora and analysis of plurilingual practices.
Conditions for submission
Authors are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 500 words, accompanied by approximately 10 relevant bibliographic references. Each abstract should include
- Research background
- Research question (and hypotheses, if any)
- Theoretical framework used
- Methodology used
- Type of data produced
- Results (or draft results if research in progress)
Proposals should be submitted in the language of your choice, accompanied by an English version, and will be evaluated by an international scientific panel.
