Philosophy and the National Question
La philosophie et la question nationale
Published on Wednesday, February 19, 2025
Abstract
Taking as its starting point the idea of “philosophical nationalism” proposed by Jacques Derrida, this seminar aims to question the way in which different national and nationalist discourses have accompanied both the construction of modern philosophical historiography and the development of comparative or intercultural philosophy. The division of the world into “philosophical nations” still constitutes today the starting point of any comparative effort and leads to making the “dialogue between traditions” a discourse tending to legitimize national ideologies.

Argument
Taking as its starting point the idea of "philosophical nationalism" proposed by Jacques Derrida, this seminar aims to question the way in which different national and nationalist discourses have accompanied both the construction of modern philosophical historiography and the development of comparative or intercultural philosophy. The division of the world into "philosophical nations" still constitutes today the starting point of any comparative effort and leads to making the "dialogue between traditions" a discourse tending to legitimize national ideologies. Such a "situation" of contemporary philosophy is not without influencing philosophical practices and, even more, its institutional frameworks. Is it possible and legitimate to recognize, among the styles of different traditions of thought, traits that would constitute "nationalities"? In short, are there philosophical identities or recognizable places of thought that would justify the relationship of philosophy to certain national traditions? It is to such reflections that this seminar intends to contribute.
All talks this semester will be in English; the discussion will be in English and French.
