Abstract

Climate change is not only a biophysical process but also a profound social, cultural, territorial and behavioural challenge. As climate impacts intensify across Europe and beyond, responses increasingly unfold at the intersection between disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, short-term risk management and preparedness logics meet longer-term processes of social and territorial transformation. This volume invites contributions that explore the relationships between climate change, behavioural adaptation and territorial transformation from interdisciplinary and critical perspectives.

Climate change is not only a biophysical process but also a profound social, cultural, territorial and behavioural challenge. As climate impacts intensify across Europe and beyond, responses increasingly unfold at the intersection between disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, short-term risk management and preparedness logics meet longer-term processes of social and territorial transformation.

Adaptation increasingly depends on how individuals, communities, institutions and territories perceive risks, interpret uncertainty, mobilise emotions, reorganise everyday practices, and participate in collective transformation. In this context, behavioural adaptation is a crucial lens for understanding the Anthropocene: it connects climate awareness with lived experience, individual and collective agency, socio-environmental vulnerability, risk reduction strategies, governance innovation, and the emergence of new digital and artificial intelligence-based tools for adaptive decision-making.

This volume invites contributions that explore the relationships between climate change, behavioural adaptation and territorial transformation from interdisciplinary and critical perspectives. We welcome theoretical, empirical, methodological and policy-oriented chapters addressing how people and institutions respond to climate risks, both through immediate risk reduction practices and longer-term adaptive strategies, how adaptation practices are shaped by perceptions, emotions, values, inequalities and place-based knowledge, and how governance systems can support more inclusive, just and effective climate resilience and risk reduction pathways.

Particular attention will be given to contributions examining the role of citizens, communities and local authorities in adaptation processes; the behavioural and cultural dimensions of resilience; the everyday practices through which adaptation is negotiated, resisted or embedded; how these practices contribute simultaneously to risk preparedness, response and long-term adaptation; and the ways in which digital technologies, artificial intelligence, participatory platforms, climate services and decision-support systems are transforming adaptive governance. The volume also seeks to critically assess the opportunities and risks associated with technological innovation, including issues of trust, accessibility, accountability, transparency and socio-spatial justice.

By bringing together geography, environmental studies, climate adaptation research, social sciences, urban and regional studies, governance studies and digital transformation perspectives, the volume aims to advance the debate on how societies learn, adapt and transform under climate change. It will contribute to a deeper understanding of behavioural adaptation as a situated, relational and multi-scalar process, shaped by the interaction between perceptions, emotions, knowledge systems, institutions, technologies and territories across both emergency and preparedness-oriented and long-term transformative frameworks.

Indicative topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Perceptions, emotions and climate awareness in relation to climate risks and hazards;
  • behavioural adaptation, resilience and everyday practices in risk preparedness and long-term adaptation;
  • climate risk communication, trust and public engagement across preparedness, response and adaptation processes;
  • vulnerability, inequality, justice and adaptive capacity in both risk reduction and adaptation contexts;
  • community-based, youth-centered, citizen-led and all-of-society approaches to risk reduction and adaptation;
  • governance, territories and socio-environmental transformation;
  • local, regional and multi-level risk reduction and adaptation pathways;
  • digital technologies, artificial intelligence and adaptive governance for risk assessment, preparedness and long-term adaptation;
  • climate services, decision-support tools and participatory platforms;
  • transformative adaptation, social learning and institutional change and their link with disaster risk reduction.

Submission Procedure

Interested authors should submit their proposals (max 500 words) explaining the main topic and the objectives of the chapter,

by July 31, 2026.

Acceptance/Rejection notification will be sent to the authors by August 31, 2026. After the acceptance notification, authors should submit full chapters by October 31, 2026 formatting their manuscripts following the Editor’s guidelines.

The manuscript word count must be between 4500 - 6000 words. This includes tables, illustrations, references, etc. All submissions will be reviewed in a double-blind manner.

About the Book Series Geographies of the Anthropocene
