Articles are solicited for an edited collection on postwar French intellectual and cultural history. The volume will highlight recent work that brings new energies to studying the influential field of post-1945 French intellectual life, culture, and politics. After the moment of "French theory," when the stars of post-structuralism and
continental thought have been largely eclipsed, historians are revisiting a terrain that, once seemingly familiar as the land of ideas, looks different when mapped with historical care.

Essays may consider any "stories" of the period: from the unexplored dimensions of canonical thinkers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Michel Foucault to the introduction of hitherto neglected figures and controversies; from the role of the media in French intellectual-cultural politics to the revival of religion or classical political theory; from debates in Francophone colonies to the transformations of institutions such as the university and publishing
house. Articles might grapple with tensions between texts and contexts, theoretical and empirical researches, intellectual history and the history of intellectuals. Preference will be given to previously unpublished essays that mine new materials. On the whole, the volume will assess whether one can speak of a generational sensibility for those who came of age intellectually in the era of "French theory" and
have returned to the study of postwar France with the intentions and skills of the historian.

Authors who are accepted may be invited to a conference on the volume's themes. The conference will be held at Columbia University(New York, NY) in spring 2004.
