Aim of the Symposium
• This will be the 8th symposium to deal specifically with remote sensing applications in polar environments. It will provide an international forum for the discussion of work currently being carried out in the circumpolar regions of the world in the following topic areas:
• Environmental monitoring
• Wildlife management and habitat protection
• Arctic vegetation
• Land and water management
• Pollution control
• Snow and ice
• Climatology
• Oceanography
• Geology
• Mineral and oil and gas exploration
• Archaeology

• Geographic information system
• There will be an International Polar Year in 2007/2008. It has been approved by the UN and a number of countries have already formed organizing committees. During the symposium, a special session will be planned to discuss on how earth observation and especially our scientific group could be involved in this Polar Year. Discussion could include such things as a special symposium, involvement of more remote sensing scientists from circumpolar countries, the use of more earth observation technologies in the various scientific projects planed for the polar year, etc.
• This symposium will be of interest to scientists, scholars, and industry and government professionals involved in renewable and non-renewable resource management in polar environments. The symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of current applied international research, the presentation of new technology, and the advancement of internal co-operation in the circumpolar regions of the world.
