Abstract

Freud au XXIe siècle - Freud in the 21th century

Colloque bilingue et pluridisciplinaire organisé par Jan Goldstein (University of Chicago)

Organized by Jan Goldstein (University of Chicago, Dept. of History)

With his pioneering book, The Interpretation of Dreams--which he audaciously billed “the royal road to the unconscious”-- published in the symbolic year 1900, Sigmund Freud very much belonged to the twentieth century. His always controversial theories powerfully influenced not only the treatment of patients suffering from nervous ailments, but also academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences; they even made inroads into popular culture. This conference surveys Freud's place in the intellectual firmament from the vantage point of the opening of the twenty-first century. Has he retained a commanding position? How have Anglo-American and French readers appropriated his texts differently?
