Religions and Politics in Europe's Orients (14th-20th c.)

Résumé

The goal of this conference is to explore a number of aspects of the relationship between the religious phenomenon and politics through the historical framework of political developments in what progressively will become, through interaction, the Orients of Europe, i.e. Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as the Eastern Mediterranean, an area so unorthodox and difficult to examine in terms of essentialist definitions. It is no accident that Samuel Huntington believed that what we call the ‘Orthodox East’ does not form a part of the West, but rather a sui generis encounter between Christianity and Islam at the borders of Europe. This theoretical scheme is not overturned by drawing the borders of Europe a little further to the East, as many believe, but by historicizing the issue of the relationship between religion and politics in the given geographical region through the comparative prism of what was occurring during the same period in Western Europe.

Annonce

At our conference, discussion will focus on the following basic themes across a historical period extending from the 14th to the early 20th centuries:

  • the consequences of the transition from the Byzantine to the Ottoman Empire on the relationship between politics and religion and the conceptualization of the idea of power
  • the processes of secularization, as these were advanced in the Eastern Mediterranean and SE Europe, together with the particular historical features distinguishing them
  • the influence of the religious wars that occurred in Western Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, with the rift between Catholicism and Protestantism, on the representatives of the historical religions coexisting in the Eastern Mediterranean
  • the readjustment of theoretical opinions and political practices of prelates and the faithful towards
  • the phenomenon of the modern state and of modern religion emerging in the first and second confessionalization eras
  • the important role played by education and educational actors in the encounter between East and West
  • the decisive consequences of the spread of nationalism, as the dominant ideology for political fulfillment, on the subjugation of the religious to the political element, and simultaneously, the different ways in which this subjugation was mediated in Orthodoxy, Islam, and Judaism.

We hope that this approach will allow the examination of the historical roles of the various religious groups in the areas of Eastern and Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean vis-à-vis the process of modernization, i.e. vis-à-vis their attitude towards the phenomenon of modernity.
