Abstract

Arabian Humanities. International Journal of Archaeology and Social Sciences on the Arabian Peninsula.

Call for papers On Contemporary Writing in the Arabian Peninsula

Since the late twentieth century, the literary production of the Peninsula has emerged on the Arab literary scene as a player in the future of Arabic literature, both by its writers, its structures of legitimization and the evolution of the readership present in this region. The contribution of some countries like Saudi Arabia and Yemen is significant. It has sometimes overshadowed the literary activity of other countries from the Peninsula like Oman like the Oman Peninsula, land of the poet Sayf al-Rahbi and of Nizwa, the literary magazine that has become a reference for arab-based journals, or Kuwait, where the novelist Layla al-Uthman lives.

The focus of the project will be limited to the production of novels and short stories in the Arabian Peninsula and will follow three axes:

1. Writing narrative tradition and innovation :

This entails, from a textual and intertextual perspective, describing the modes of literary expression at work in the production of the Peninsula, by analyzing the changes and permanencies that characterize them, by drawing out its specificities and showing how this production is part of the Arab literary scene in general.

The focus will include establishing a set of data needed for further research:

  • Bibliography of literary works (novels and short stores) by country
  • Bibliography of studies on the subject
  • Contribution for writing a literary history of the region.

We will also consider:

  • New forms of writing
  • The possible interactions between different regions of the Peninsula, and between those and the rest of the Arab world
  • The representation of space in fiction
  • The impact of the socio-political environment on the work of the writer
  • The importance of writers in current production

2. The process of legitimization of the literary act :

The second set of questions will focus on the literary field or fields presents in the Peninsula as well as established modes of validation for literary works. The institutional action, the emergence of new communication tools and social interaction, and the role of the critic (academic or not) will be evoked to describe the mechanisms of evolution and validation of literary production. This approach should help to characterize the conditions of enunciation of contemporary narrative in the Peninsula, its distribution and circulation (especially through translation or through instances of legitimization or of self-legitimization). It will also highlight the changes brought about in society by the emergence of new genres. Within this framework, the following could form the basis for discussions:

  • The actions of the State, including censorship

  • The place of teaching

  • The role of clubs, internet, networks of writers

  • The symbolic capital to which writing contributes

3. From the work to the reader :

These questions naturally lead to questions about the readership of these works, both in the Peninsula and elsewhere in the Arab world and beyond, through translation. We will attempt to determine the features of the reader:

  • the model reader developed by the literary text,
  • the real reader revealed by sociological analysis,
  • the virtual reader influenced by the incentives and promotional discourses surrounding works.

This project, coordinated by Elisabeth Vauthier (Professor, University of Rennes 2) and Luc Deheuvels (Professor, INALCO), will be conducted in partnership between the LASIMA (Language, Knowledge and Imaginaries in the Arab World, ERIMIT EA 4327), the CERMOM ( Centre for Studies and Research Middle East Mediterranean EA 4091) and CEFAS (French Center for Archaeology and Social Sciences in Sanaa), to which will be associated institutions and universities in the Arabian Peninsula, including the University of King Abd al-Aziz in Jeddah. It will culminate in the publication of two reports, one centered around the short story, the second around the novel. They will be published one in the electronic review Arabics, the other in Arabian Humanities. International Journal of Archeaology and Social Sciences on the Arabian Peninsula, published by the CEFAS.
