Argument

Development has been and remains the main framework from which national and international policies are considered. This is also the context in which the exercise of power between states and civilizations is carried out. This problem leads to questioning with heavy consequences on the history of relations between the countries of the world especially regarding the ability of some societies to acquire knowledge and technologies which could help them out of their socioeconomic and environmental decay.

The rhetoric of development has also produced a discourse on education. The link between education and development is increasingly important, especially since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Brazil in June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, known as the Earth Summit. This initiative focused on the fight against climate change and protection of the atmosphere, the conservation of biodiversity, protection of environment and resources, social cohesion and solidarity between territories and generations. It also addressed the development of human beings and the dynamics of their development following modes of production and responsible consumption. A new global framework intended by the United Nations was established under the coordination of UNESCO called the "United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development - DESD."

There remains an acute problem that is the issue of development education, and especially its generalization in school, orientated to the training of a responsible and informed citizen of the twenty-first century with a deep critical sense in sustainable consumption and actor in the dialogue between civilizations. The inclusion of education for sustainable development in all scholar disciplines of the first and second cycles, should now be at the center of concerns, to enable students acquire the knowledge and methods needed to save the planet. Educational research is required to accompany these changes in order to help decision makers understand the importance of educating citizens of the third millennium with a deep awareness of the interdependence of human societies to deal with the issue of survival of our globe . Thus, the question of which education for what development is at the heart of the debate in terms of the various disappointments recorded on promoting a shared vision of global development education.

By proposing to examine the link between education and development, this issue of Formazione & Insegnamento intends to explore new fields of research on the issue of education for sustainable development and its generalization in the educational system. The expected contributions will cover one or more of the following research topics:

1. Generalization of Education for Sustainable Development in School

2. Education for sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals

3. Education for sustainable development and postcolonial criticism

4. Pedagogy of Sustainable Development

5. The anchor of sustainable development in schools through the school Agenda 21

6. School governance through Green Management

7. Adult Education and Education for Sustainable Development.
