History of Education(s) Inside and Outside School

Histoire des éducations dans et hors l’école

Abstract

Since the Middle Ages, schooling has increasingly become a stage in the life of children and youth. But other educational bodies, including the family of course, have always existed alongside the school. In particular, one thinks of the variety of religious, professional, private, public, communitarian, and national actors or institutions, which have sought at different historical periods to “educate” the young and the not so young (churches, armies, hospitals, clubs, sections of the job market for vocational training,  etc.).  A variety of associations with educational, philosophical and political goals have similarly acted as educational bodies (for example, church clubs, after-school institutions, youth organizations and movements).

Argument

The conference encourages historical investigation that explores the complex situations of cooperation and competition between school and these other educational agencies, including the larger relationship, which exists between school and culture(s) in general. Submissions concerning all historical periods are welcome, as well as topics that treat non-francophone areas.

Submission guidelines

The submitted abstract (in French or English) should contain between 2,000 and 3,000 characters. If their proposals are accepted, non-French speaking contributors should expect to provide a two-page summary of their talk in French before the conference and to prepare a powerpoint presentation (or outline) in French as well.

The abstract should be sent before 8th February 2014 to the following two email addresses:

lepidi@univ-corse.fr (Véronique Lepidi, ingénieure CNRS, UMR LISA)

garnier@univ-corse.fr (Bruno Garnier).

The abstract should present the general argument as well as the source material used to develop the argument in relationship to the conference theme.  We ask contributors to include a bibliography of 5 titles and 4 or 5 key-words.

The abstracts will be submitted to a committee of experts. Authors should expect a response by the end of March.

The conference will be held on October 9, 2014, in Corte.
