Abstract

This conference aims to explore the tensions, challenges, and alternatives on the one hand between official and legitimate memories and emerging memories in search of legitimization, and on the other hand between scholarly historical memories and lived collective memories. Taking into account the performative character of cultural heritage, the conference seeks to explore the social and political processes that engender heritage, to question how heritage is produced by its stakeholders, and to analyse heritage as a stake in collective action and public policy. We aim to reverse the perspective on cultural heritage and consider it as a topic of debate, controversy, argument, and even conflict - all of which bring heritage into being.

Argument

Thereby, we seek to re-examine cultural heritage and its underlying values, representations, and discourses, beyond normative criteria, by taking into account individual and collective producers and users of heritage. Hence, multiple meanings, values and stakes of both the proponents and opponents of heritage objects could be revealed.
