Abstract

In France, in the United States and in other developed countries, even in many developing countries, these suburban areas have been the topics of numerous studies, including the reasons and the consequences of urban spread. Of course, sociologists take part in these studies, even though the main sociological concerns and debates are not yet to the fore. This call for papers aims to mobilize the community of sociologists by asking four important questions : What is the subject under discussion ? What are the suburban lifestyles ? What are the underlying factors of suburbanization ? What changes have there been in urban sociology ?

Argument

Whilst not a new phenomenon, suburbanization has, in the past few years, become an important part of the analysis and discussions of geographers, land developers and town planners.

In France, in the United States and in other developed countries, even in many developing countries, these suburban areas have been the topics of numerous studies, including the reasons and the consequences of urban spread. Of course, sociologists take part in these studies, even though the main sociological concerns and debates are not yet to the fore.

This call for papers aims to mobilize the community of sociologists by asking four important questions: What is the subject under discussion? What are the suburban lifestyles? What are the underlying factors of suburbanization? What changes have there been in urban sociology?

First of all, the contributions looked for could deal with the definitions of suburbanization throughout different academic fields, and also from comparative perspectives. Studies of various approaches to boundaries (by definition, shape, function, representation) seem timely. International and historical perspectives are most welcome. How can one analyse suburbanization at the crossroads of social and spatial logic? What do suburban areas have in common when they can be very different? What lessons, methodological or theoretical, can be learned from studies on suburbanization?

Based on empirical analysis (specific investigations or surveys in which the specificities of suburbanization arise), the articles could also include the aspirations, constraints, situations, mobility and development of the inhabitants of suburban areas. Whether they have been coerced or they have chosen to live in these areas, what have been the characteristics and development of their way of life? What does this tell us specifically about lifestyles which are becoming evermore urbanised? These articles, seen through the lens of these types of areas, could also deal with the broader dynamics which contribute to their growth or even just in raising the issue of the question of suburbanization. Beyond a description of the population and the areas, it is a question of asking oneself what mechanisms and operational thinking affect suburban areas. What are the links between segregation, fragmentation and suburbanization? Can we reconcile this new territorial division highlighting suburbanization with the social stratification which questions the middle classes?

Finally, these articles could deal with the special place that suburbanization has in urban sociology. Whether it involves a new reading of the classics or a discussion on more recent theoretical approaches, the aim here is to highlight what suburban studies can bring to urban sociology, what they substantiate, correct or refute. Is there even a suburban sociology? How can we account for the various positions and controversies dealing with questions on suburbanization? Based on suburban research, how can we evaluate theories such as the diffuse city, the compact city or generalised urbanisation?

Even if this call for papers is aimed mainly at sociologists, it may be of interest to other disciplines, which could generate discussions on the specific sociological aspects of the way they work.
