Zusammenfassung

The University of Luxembourg (FLSHASE - Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education, Research Unit IPSE – Identities. Politics, Societies, Space) seeks to hire a PhD Candidate (m/f) to join a multiannual research project, entitled "Material Culture and Spaces of Remembrance. A Study of Cemeteries in Luxembourg in the Context of the Greater Region" (Acronym: R.I.P.). The project examines changes in sepulchral culture and  social transformation processes concerning individualisation, pluralisation, secularisation as well as de- and resacralisation. The project also pertains to spatal and urban development as cemetery areas undergo significant changes in allocation.

Profile

  • Master degree (or equivalent) in Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, Geography, History and/or Sociology.
  • Previous work on funeral cultures will be considered a bonus, but is not a prerequisite.
  • Experience in conducting qualitative interviews (oral history, ethnography etc.) or good knowledge of quantitative methods (statistics, cartography) are required, but you do not need to have a specific background in cultural anthropology or spatial analysis.
  • Willingness to do fieldwork in Luxembourg and the Greater Region (that is, the neighbouring regions of Germany, France and Belgium). As public transport might not always be available, a driving license might be necessary.
  • Language skills: English and at least one of the official languages of Luxembourg to conduct interviews and field work (Luxembourgish, French or German; knowledge of Portuguese will be considered a plus).
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team, communication and cooperation skills, writing skills, strong personal commitment, determination.
  • Last but not least, enthusiasm about, above average commitment for, and enjoyment in research in material culture.

Role

Working with an international and interdisciplinary team undertaking research into the interactions of materiality, mentalities and institutional orders, you will be

  • planning and executing fieldwork in spatial analysis of selected cemeteries,
  • conducting qualitative interviews with grave owners and tenders
  • undertaking participatory observation of funerary rituals.
  • analysing and interpreting data in your PhD thesis
  • presenting your preliminary and final results in conference papers and peer-reviewed publications

Research position, no teaching required.
