Yatching: an overview of the situation. The Yatching: a current situation. This call for papers of the Études Caribéennes Journal invites to establish a current situation of the sailing, in all its dimensions: places of sailing, spaces and practices, industry of the yatching, events, development of marinas with economic impacts and environmental issues. It’s a matter of building a multidisciplinary reflection on the sailing. 



In many tourist destinations, the coastal tourism development in the 1970s is a victory over fear of a sea that has often brought the invader. Today, the invader becomes a seasonal expectancy for some people, and for others, a stranger whose departure is anticipated. Since the beginning, this initial ambiguity hits the tourism field which is still assimilated to a massive, seasonal and identity and environment destructive mobility. These cleavages never facilitated the scientific analysis of the phenomenon. Between developers and protectors, we often play the opposition role: traveler/tourist. Today, the coastal tourism development still prompts controversial reactions to which an increased environmental risk is added.

Faced with these problems and also faced with ethno-centric proposals who ignore the situation complexity and seek only to keep up dreamy areas, this special issue of Etudes Caribéennes would undertake a general reflection on coastal tourism in terms of a "reasoned economic development." This notion could now be enlightened through paper contributions to increase awareness of yachting as a tourism development sector.

Indeed, as many foreign tourist destinations (Croatia, Greece, Holland, Scandinavia), many French regions (Bretagne, West Indies) make this activity a strong element of their development strategies. This can be sweet, "soft", light, and intended as a meeting element with local people (especially the river-yachting or lake-yachting).

The reality is more complex. It often results in a more industrial vision from the marketing approach based on a protected nature to a more comprehensive approach including development of ports and rings, construction, repair or rental companies, technological innovation and creation of ocean races-based events. All sometimes supported by tax exemption policies which enables for investment in the "yachting". But, beyond an inherent libertarian vision in any nature activity and longtime reserved for a few adventurers, yachting has become an economic activity that is no longer based on its profit in a dream of leaving and a different kind of life. The destination will be sold through the quality of services associated with its cost, its unspoilt nature or through a heritage recovery on traditional business background. It will highlight the safety of its waters and its easy access, as well as sailing conditions for access safely to another form of seaside tourism.

Every day, tourists-yachtsmen and residents will only intersect in ports – merely as an extensions of coastal zones – that become animated "hubs" in season. But those, particularly urban and often mixed, are also places of life for many residents, who usually do not see aggression against the coastline in this activity and only care when it comes to limiting their own access to the sea (open anchorage restriction, marine park creation ...). They are sometimes found as coastal consumers by accessing the huts sometimes with uncertain legality which nevertheless involved a daily escape to the exotic often highly priced.

The theme is open to all manuscripts related to coastal tourism development through the development of yachting in the fields of geographical, economic, sociological, political or ecological studies ... This issue will suggest both theoretical and empirical situation analyses, presenting case studies and a critical discussion about the development of yachting and coastal protection.
