The aim of this meeting is to work about sacrament and oath in the Middle Age. This event will allow to researchers of different relevances (litterature, philosophy, history, philology) to cross their studies.

Argument

The oath, the fidelity, the pact, the promise or the perjury grounds every political community or every institution inside of a political community. The subject possesses an obvious social relevance, and it deals with the philosophical question about the truthfulness of the word.

In the Middle Ages, oath becomes a deep-rooted institution, which can be studied trough juridical and philosophical texts and visual arts. Its political-theological transformations are capital in the modern context. The sense of Modernity here is not only a historical period, but the world in which the modern philosophical presuppositions are still valid. It is the case for the institutional framework in 20^th Century, even if the philosophical approach of the second half of 20^th Century seems Post-Modern.

Our conference will gather medievalists and philosophers in order to ask several essential questions: Could the oath as genetic institution of the modern political community survive the “Post-Modern condition”? If yes, how the oath meaning will modify? Nowadays, has the oath been reduced to a solemn declaration or to a declaration expressing a civil religion based on the constitutional text? Is our political and financial crisis a crisis of credibility or fidelity? Under which “linguistic regime” does show the oath a performative character? Is the age of oaths, with its clear distinctions between truthfulness and perjury declining? The historical inquire of the past here is but the backing quest of the present.
