Abstract
Les prochaines rencontres Instrumentum se dérouleront en Arles les 13-17 juin 2017, au musée départemental de l’Arles antique. Ces rencontres ont pour thématique les modes de transports dans l’Antiquité et au Moyen Âge et porteront en particulier sur l’équipement et l’entretien des véhicules terrestres, fluviaux et maritimes.

The next Instrumentum Meeting will be in Arles, at the Museum of Antiquity, co-organised by the Conseil Départemental des Bouches-du-Rhône and the LabEx Archimède – ASM « Archéologie des Sociétés Méditerranéennes » UMR 5140 (Univ Montpellier 3, CNRS, MCC) Montpellier, in partnership whit the UMR 7299 « Centre Camille Jullian » (Aix Marseille Univ, CNRS, Minist Culture & Com, CCJ) Aix-en-Provence, the CREA-Patrimoine of the « Université Libre de Bruxelles », the « Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée » (Université de Lyon 2, CNRS) et the LAMOP (Laboratoire Médiévistique Occidentale de Paris, UMR 8589, Univ Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne/CNRS).
The theme will be modes of transport in Antiquity et the Middle Ages and will focus in particular on the equipment and maintenance of land, river and sea vehicles.
For multi-period sessions are open :
- land vehicles drawn by animals (waggons, chariots, carriages) ;
- river transport vehicles (boats, canoes and their methods of traction or propulsion) ;
- sea going vessels ;
- and, although not strictly adhering to the definition of vehicles, mounted horses.
Papers and posters may submitted on subjects such as objects, studies of transport across a site or region, restorations and experimental results, documentary studies, etc.
They can include the component parts of vehicles (metal, wood, leather, basketry), the elements relating to their motion or operation (traction, propulsion, steering), accessories, trimmings and ornaments. Vehicles from occupation sites, maritime or road networks, craft-working sites, wrecks, graves, ports, etc. can be presented.
The attached paper proposal sheet should be returned before the 31 December 2016, togheter with your summary.
The final program, the registration form for the conférence and all information relating to the running of the évent will be published in February 2017.
