Summary

The 7th Portuguese Anthropological Association congress aims to discuss the condition of being human and being in the world today. 2019, a year of a possible calendar among many other available. Without identifying themes, reference words, categories or classifications, 2019 marks a stage in the social and natural history of the planet. The openness suggested in an “untitled” congress also points to an anthropology without conceptual, thematic or epistemological boundaries. It is life in itself that interests anthropology, anthropologies, thinking the gerund of human existence, others and the rest from multiple interpretive possibilities. After all, anthropology is practiced on everything and everyone in a project of knowledge that remains inexhaustible in terms of what exists and is to come.

Presentation

The 7th APA congress aims to discuss the condition of being human and being in the world today, 2019. A year of a possible calendar among many other available. Without identifying themes, reference words, categories or classifications, 2019 marks a stage in the social and natural history of the planet. The openness suggested in an ‘untitled’ congress also points to an anthropology without conceptual, thematic or epistemological boundaries. It is life in itself that interests anthropology, anthropologies, thinking the gerund of human existence, others and the rest from multiple interpretive possibilities. After all, anthropology is practiced on everything and everyone in a project of knowledge that remains inexhaustible in terms of what exists and is to come.

By simply proposing 2019, APA recognizes that the terrain of anthropology goes beyond the most obvious – on the most immediate scales of perception possible from the condition of being human. In a time when we also talk about societal, anthropocentric, climate change or end of the world challenges, the intentionally open proposal is an invitation to think about everything that affects the past, present and future unequally lived by humans and nonhumans.

2019 marks the 30 years of APA as an Association that represents anthropology and anthropologists who speak Portuguese or who work in Portugal. It is a congress celebrating a journey seen as a process under construction and for which so many have contributed. May 2019 be the first of more 30 years of Portuguese anthropology in the world.

Submission Guidelines

Rules to submit a panel proposal:

  • Use the form at https://goo.gl/forms/nXhQis5gv7kNH6q53 to submit your proposal. Proposals sent by e-mail will not be considered.
  • All proposals must have the following information: name of the proponent(s), their institutional affiliation and e-mail address; title; short abstract (max 50 words); long abstract (max 200 words).
  • Proposals can be submitted in Portuguese (PT), Spanish (ES) or English (EN); a complementary version in a second language (PT, ES or EN) must always be sent; the proposal should also indicate what will be the working language (preferential and never exclusive) of the panel, if approved.
  • Proposals may have one or two proponents; if the proposal is submitted by two proponents, they should indicate who will take the position of panel coordinator (the second proponent being the co-coordinator); a proponent cannot coordinate two panels but may, however, be coordinator of one panel and co-coordinator of another.

Evaluation and selection of panels:

  • All panel proposals will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee.
  • The criteria are: (a) compliance with the rules (mentioned above); b) clarity, cohesion and academic rigor.
  • The list of approved panels will be announced on the congress website until October 22, 2018.

The coordinator of an approved panel is responsible for:

  • During the period for paper proposals submission the panel coordinator must receive and follow all proposals to the respective panel, ensuring that the proposals are in accordance with what was required in the Call for Papers.
  • For the selection of paper proposals the panel coordinator should take into account that each panel can have one or two sessions, each session having minimum three and maximum five papers.
  • Once the selection process is completed, all received proposals should be compiled by the panel coordinator and sent to the congress secretariat, including three lists: a) communications approved; b) communications that do not fit into the panel but have quality to be reallocated in another panel, indicating which one; c) communications not approved.
  • After sending the lists to the secretariat and even before communicating the results to the authors (for both approved and unapproved proposals) the panel coordinator should wait for the validation of the Scientific Commission.
  • The authors of approved proposals should be advised by the respective panel coordinator about the need to comply with the deadlines for registration at the congress, as well as the respective payment, reminding that non-compliance may result in non-inclusion in the panel program.
  • Based on the final list of approved papers, all panel coordinators have to plan / program the respective panel, in particular the order of presentation, the distribution of time (according to the general indications of the congress regarding the time reserved for each panel) panel moderators (if applicable), etc.; panel coordinator should also ask the authors to specify the audiovisual and computer media required for the presentation of their communications.

Registration fee / payment

All participants are subject to the payment of a registration fee regardless of their role in the congress (authors, co-authors, coordinators, co-coordinators, moderators, debaters, etc.). The registration categories with their values and deadlines are available on the congress website.
