Presentation
As part of growing scholarly and public interest intransnational history, researchers from various(sub)disciplines in contemporary history have becomeinterested in the Low Countries’ contacts and exchangeswith Latin America. Latin Americanists increasinglyadopt transnational and entangled perspectives tomap contemporary relationships and shared historiesbetween Latin America and Europe. The research fieldis nonetheless confronted with a discrepancy betweenthe growing desire to analyse these historic and contemporarylinkages and the availability and accessibility ofsources to conduct these investigations.
This two-day international workshop aims to address thisdebilitating obstacle and establish a dialogue betweenscholars and the vast yet frequently unknown sourcesdocumenting the multidimensional relationships betweenthe Low Countries and Latin America from the19th century until today. Archives and depositories ofvarious stock will be provided an opportunity to presentboth traditional (archival) as unconventional collectionsto scholars working within a wide range of disciplines.
The workshop calls on researchers, young and seniorand from a range of disciplines, to bring innovative andoriginal perspectives on current or past relationships betweenLatin America and the Low Countries to the table.Papers can focus, not exclusively, on topics such as humanmigration, the construction of transnational knowledgesand networks, trade, diplomacy, cultural exchanges, ideological influences, etc. With these ambitions in mind, ENCUENTRO2019 hopesto stimulate innovative and multidisciplinary research ontransnational relations, shed light on an uncharted albeitavailable set of sources, and foster exchanges betweenthe Low Countries and Latin America.ENCUENTRO2019 aims to lay the foundation for furtherinitiatives that unite researchers and archival institutionsinterested in the social, political, cultural and economicexchanges between Europe and Latin America in the 19thand 20th centuries, and the “shared heritage” these entangledhistories produced.
