Zusammenfassung

Applications are invited for two research positions in Medieval History at the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 933 ‘Material Text Cultures’ at Heidelberg University, Germany. Successful applicants will work on one of two main projects. The first project centres on genealogical manuscripts from fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century England and the Holy Roman Empire in a comparative perspective. The second project deals with the forms of literacy in English seignorial administrations (bishops and princes) in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

Applications are invited for two research positions in Medieval History at the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 933 ‘Material Text Cultures’ at Heidelberg University, Germany, starting on 1 July 2019.

Applications from doctoral candidates are particularly encouraged, however, post-doctoral applications may also be considered. Successful candidates are expected to complete a doctorate (DPhil) at Heidelberg University, or in the case of post-doctorates, to produce a monograph.

The positions are based in sub-project B10 (principal investigator: Prof Dr Jörg Peltzer): ‘Rolls for the King. The Form of Rolls in Royal Administration and Historiography in the Late Middle Ages in Western Europe’

Missions

Successful applicants will work on one of the two following projects:

  • The first project centres on genealogical manuscripts from fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century England and the Holy Roman Empire in a comparative perspective.
  • The second project deals with the forms of literacy in English seignorial administrations (bishops and princes) in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

Although the general topics of the projects are predetermined by the CRC 933 and the sub-project, there is room for some thematic adjustments and concept development in accordance with the principal investigator.

The CRC 933 at Heidelberg University offers a highly-active interdisciplinary research environment with up to 18 different fields in the Humanities.

Salary

Salary is determined in accordance with the German public sector salary scale. For both positions, this is calculated as 65% of TV-L E13 (https://lbv.landbw.de/-/tabellenentgelt-ab-01-01-2017-neu).

Essential criteria for applicants:

  • Above average masters degree in History with a specialisation in Medieval History (or equivalent degrees). Those who will graduate in September 2019 can also apply.
  • Good knowledge of English, French, and Latin.
  • Working or researching experience in archives and libraries.
  • General interest in the research fields of ‘materiality’ and ‘pragmatic literacy’, and a particular interest in the methods and theories of the CRC 933.
  • Ability to work in a large interdisciplinary research environment.
  • It is expected that the researchers reside in Heidelberg for the duration of the project.

To note

The positions are available for four years from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2023. Successful applicants must start no later than October 2019. There will be no extension of the position.

An office at the chair for ‘Comparative Regional History in a European Perspective’ will be available for successful applicants.
