The Department of Languages and Cultures (Section Middle East Studies) at Ghent University is looking for a PhD-student to conduct a research on Egyptian artists who left their country for living in Europe and Northern America after 2013. The general aim of the project is to understand how these artists positioned themselves in their new surroundings and towards the situation in Egypt, particularly concerning their art production.

Job description

The Department of Languages and Cultures (Section Middle East Studies) at Ghent University is looking for a PhD-student to conduct a research on Egyptian artists who left their country for living in Europe and Northern America after 2013. The general aim of the project is to understand how these artists positioned themselves in their new surroundings and towards the situation in Egypt, particularly concerning their art production. The focus of the project is socio-anthropological. The inquiry will include the collection of relevant materials, participant observation, interviews and possibly archive work. The successful applicant will fulfill his PhD in the framework of this project under the supervision of Prof. Aymon Kreil. The language of the dissertation will be English or Dutch. Besides, the successful applicant is expected to participate in the activities of the department. We offer you a PhD scholarship of max. 4 years, depending positive evaluations. Your appointment will start by 01/10/2019 at the earliest. You will receive a PhD scholarship according to the general conditions at Ghent University. Profile of the candidate

  • You have excellent grades in your Master, with preferably a Master thesis on a topic related to the project.
  • You have a preliminary experience with ethnography.
  • You have a good knowledge of MSA and Egyptian dialect.
