Abstract

The IVth International Congress Thinking the Latin American right wings follows the three previous ones held in France (2014), Argentina (2016) and Brazil (2018), which have permitted the constitution of a community of researchers working on Latin American right-wings. Several specialists from different countries and disciplines have joined in this network, in order to promote projects and studies on this theme, and stimulated the development of new issues related to this political family. The use of various methodologies such as the analysis of political traditions and cultures, representations and imaginaries, identities, networks, sensitivities and memories have made it possible to consolidate a field of study that has become relevant to understand current Latin American political scene.

Presentation

This congress follows the three previous ones held in France (2014), Argentina (2016) and Brazil (2018), which have permitted the constitution of a community of researchers working on Latin American right-wings (https://derechalogos.hypotheses.org/). Several specialists from different countries and disciplines have joined in this network, in order to promote projects and studies on this theme, and stimulated the development of new issues related to this political family.

Undoubtedly the motivation of this group is to respond to the evolution of the international political situation in recent years, marked by an increased presence of the right-wing actors. In this context it is possible to identify both resurgences from the past and innovative political practices. Terms frequently associated to the right-wings such as Conservatism, Fascism, Neoliberalism, Nationalism and Populism, among many others, have gradually invaded the political and academic debates, but also the media and social networks. It is, however, noteworthy that the increasing use of these concepts has not led to in-depth analyses of this complex political phenomenon.

This Congress intends to reflect the confluence among scholar interest, a growing social demand and current importance of right-wing actors. This call for papers to social and humanities scientists emphasis the need of historical perspectives in order to highlight the changes and continuities of this political universe composed by very heterogeneous individual and collective actors. This universe with its shifting and porous frontiers, in permanent internal conflict, is defined by its opposition to the left-wing but also by a justification of the principle of inequality between human beings - whether based on religious or pseudo-scientific explanations - and a defense of its interests to the detriment of the rights of the rest of the population.

However, far from providing definitive answers and proposing canonical definitions, the three previous congresses have stressed the necessary reflection on the category of the "right-wing", its scope and limits, on the historical nature of the ideas and practices of this political family, on the circulation of people and the transmission of knowledge, as well as the diversity of individual and collective actors. The use of various methodologies such as the analysis of political traditions and cultures, representations and imaginaries, identities, networks, sensitivities and memories have made it possible to consolidate a field of study that has become relevant to understand current Latin American political scene.
