Abstract
This annual award is named after Yolanda Astarita Patterson, the Editor in Chief of Simone de Beauvoir Studies for more than thirty years (1985-2016). The Patterson Prize is awarded annually to a work that demonstrates excellence in writing while also embodying modes of thought and expression characteristic of Beauvoir’s oeuvre. We especially invite submissions on topics relevant to Beauvoir’s legacy such as gender and sexuality, race and culture, literature, existentialism, global politics, and others.

The Editorial Committee of Simone de Beauvoir Studies is pleased to announce the first annual Patterson Prize competition. The award is named after Yolanda Astarita Patterson, one of the founding editors of Simone de Beauvoir Studies and Editor in Chief of the journal for more than thirty years (1985-2016). Simone de Beauvoir Studies is a bilingual journal that accepts submissions in English and French. Because 2021 is the inaugural year of this competition, we will award the Patterson Prize to the best submission in two categories: English submissions and French submissions. Subsequent award cycles will alternate between English and French submissions so that one prize is presented each year.
The Patterson Prize is awarded annually to a work that demonstrates excellence in writing while also embodying modes of thought and expression characteristic of Beauvoir’s oeuvre. The winning text should make an original contribution to its field and genre; submissions that consist entirely of literature reviews and commentaries will not be considered. Hallmarks of Beauvoir’s writing include a capacity to speak to the most pressing issues of our time; rigorous thinking that attends to the complexity and ambiguity of lived experience; a remarkable openness to new ideas; detailed attention to marginalized voices and first-person accounts of phenomena; the capacity to utilize multiple modes of expression; and a courageous insistence on challenging oppression in all its forms. The winner is selected by a Prize Committee consisting of members of the journal’s international Editorial Board and Editorial Committee.
For this international and multi-genre competition, the Patterson Prize Committee invites submissions from authors writing from any national, cultural, disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and stylistic perspective. We especially invite submissions on topics relevant to Beauvoir’s legacy such as gender and sexuality, race and culture, literature, existentialism, global politics, and others. In the spirit of cultivating new and emerging discourses, submissions need not mention Beauvoir or her oeuvre directly, as long as they demonstrate clear connections to her legacy in terms of content and/or style. We accept submissions from all genres of writing, including academic essays, creative writing, poetry, memoir, plays and scripts, and journalistic reporting. Works by single authors and multiple authors are equally considered, as are works by students, faculty members, and independent scholars.
All submissions will be considered for publication in Simone de Beauvoir Studies regardless of their status in the Patterson Prize competition.

Eligibility
Any work of previously unpublished writing that has been authored by individuals at any stage of their careers who have not published a monograph in the area of submission at the time of submission. (For example, authors who submit an academic article cannot have published an academic monograph, unless it is in an area far-removed from the submission topic, such as a starkly different discipline or genre. Authors who have published an academic monograph may submit a work of creative writing). Following Beauvoir’s legacy, the Editorial Committee seeks to encourage authors to engage new genres and disciplines, and explore new aspects of their own expression at any stage of their careers.
Submission Requirements for 2021 Patterson Prize
- Submissions for the 2021 award should be written in either English or French.
- Submissions must not be under consideration elsewhere.
- Submissions should be 8,000 words or less including notes and references.
- Submissions should be prepared for anonymous review.
- All submissions must follow the SdBS Style Guidelines as described in the SdBS “Author Manual.”
- Submissions must be accompanied by a title page that lists the name/s of the author/s, contact information, and a list of all monographs published by the author/s at the time of submission.
- Submissions must meet the Patterson Prize “eligibility requirements.” Questions about eligibility should be directed to Jennifer McWeeny, SdBS@wpi.edu.
- Submissions must be submitted online through Editorial Manager
(www.editorialmanager.com/sdbs) by the deadline. Please select “Patterson Prize 2021” for “type of submission.”
Submissions not selected for the Patterson Prize may be considered for anonymous peer review and publication in other issues of Simone de Beauvoir Studies. Authors who are submitting for the Patterson Prize may also submit the same work for a special issue of Simone de Beauvoir Studies insofar as the topic is relevant to the issue’s theme.

Other Awards
Simone de Beauvoir Studies recognizes one previously-published article per year with the Featured
Translation Award / Traduction annuelle, and publishes the translation of the article into either
English or French in order to emphasize its significance and increase its international readership. The SdBS Featured Translation showcases writing of the highest quality, often authored by established scholars, full professors, and others who have produced exceptional work. Those authors who are ineligible for the Patterson Prize may consider nominating their work for the Featured Translation Award.
