International relations are experiencing a period of profound uncertainty and fragmentation, driven by a deepening polycrisis in which geopolitical rivalry, technological competition, climate change, economic instability, and supply chain disruptions reinforce one another alongside intensifying great-power competition. These shifts are particularly striking in the Indo-Pacific region, where strategic competition, economic interdependence, the race for technological supremacy, and geopolitical realignment are all intertwined ; growing uncertainty surrounds the regional landscape.

In a context of intense polarisation and radicalisation, this event (October 23, 2026, University of Angers) aims to examine how the concept of the ‘enemy within’, though long-standing, has re-emerged with renewed vigour following Donald Trump’s re-election on the one hand and the rise of the far right in the UK on the other. It has now become one of the favourite discursive tools to stigmatise, demonise and marginalise any community or individual that does not fit into the national narrative as shaped by representatives of the US or British far right, thereby contributing to blurring the boundaries between dissent, legitimate opposition and national threat.

This issue will explore these exchanges and how they have shaped both film industries and their respective aesthetic orientations, especially in regard to an allegedly dominant classical norm.

Organised by the Amidex “Democratic Alliance in the Indo-Pacific (DAIP)” project /LERMA (UR853), Aix-Marseille University, this study days aims to explore global strategies and diplomatic practices that prioritise soft power in the Indo-Pacific region. Amidst the ongoing competition between world powers to shape the international order according to their respective strategic preferences, this forum will examine how states utilise soft power resources to exert influence, establish international legitimacy, and foster regional and global partnerships. In particular, it will focus on the strengthening cohesion among democratic nations within the Indo-Pacific region and their shared efforts to shape an international order that aligns with democratic values.

Industry and Idleness: Labour, Luxury and the British Empire in the Long Eighteenth Century

Idleness as the absence of work and industry as the absence of idleness shaped social, cultural and moral values that dictated behaviour, trends, politics and economic systems. England developed an avant-garde approach to processes of production and extraction almost a century prior to the Industrial Revolution. Textile, coalmine and printing industries, for example, were regional and small-scale, often literally termed as “cottage industry”, but they also were catalysts of production and labour efficiency.

In the years leading up to the bicentenary commemorations of 1989, a new liberal interpretation of the French Revolution challenged a long-lived socialist one. In contrast to the Marxist view of a “bourgeois revolution” with popular support, the liberal historiography has recurrently emphasized the role of “revolutionary ideology” and the “collective mentality” which led to the episode of the “Terror”. We might take the end of Cold War binary frameworks as an opportunity to move beyond this long-lasting interpretive divide, and to reinvestigate how the Revolution transformed ideas of the sacred and has itself been sacralized.

Since its first broadcast on September 8, 1966, Star Trek has established itself as a prolific, transmedia, and intergenerational fictional universe that can be divided into three major eras. It is therefore not surprising that, since the 1990s, Star Trek has become a favored subject of study in Anglo-Saxon cultural studies, popular media studies, and science fiction studies, but such studies remain very rare in the French-speaking world. Most of the work focuses on its ideological, political, and social dimensions.

“Community Healthcare” in the Americas: (dis)continuities and reappropriations

Community health, which refers to a set of practices and intervention models grounded in social participation and a promotional-preventive approach, began to emerge during the 1960s as an alternative way of delivering healthcare. The American continent was one of the incubators of this approach, drawing on liberation theology and popular education movements in Latin America, the Free Clinics and the Neighborhood Health Clinics in the United States, and the interaction between popular movements and the State during Quebec’s Quiet Revolution. This issue of the journal IdeAs proposes a continental approach to community health.

In 2025, the US filmmaker Brian De Palma will turn 85. To celebrate this New Hollywood pioneer and his impressive body of work (30 feature-length fiction films, not counting ongoing projects, documentaries and shorts), this symposium will look at the director's filmography primarily through political and aesthetic approaches, aiming to offer a fresh perspective on a much-studied filmography. It will also be an opportunity to look at his lesser-known works.
