Ces deux journées d’études doctorales porteront sur l’interaction des notions de langue(s) et de frontière(s). Compte tenu de l’ampleur et la complexité du sujet, elles s’articuleront autour de trois axes thématiques : mouvements et pérégrinations linguistiques à travers les frontières, pratique de la traduction d’hier à aujourd’hui, débats et discours théoriques sur les transferts linguistiques vs. les transferts linguistiques dans les débats et les discours théoriques.

Realism in Perspective

Aesthetics & Critique VI

Back to Reality! Whether in art or philosophy, recent years have witnessed an outright run on the real, under banners such as speculative realism, neo-materialism, documentality, eco-realism, speculative poetics, or object-oriented aesthetics. Only progressively it starts to become clear that what these approaches respectively mean by realism differs sharply. The workshop shall confront various epistemic and artistic strategies seeking to grasp the ever-evading nature of reality, and work towards understanding the reasons behind this renewed desire for touching the “thing itself”. If the only claim these different realisms seem to agree upon is the need to decentre the human perspective, could it be that perspectivalness itself provides a key to a novel understanding of reality?

« Quo Vadis ». La fabrique des savoirs à l’ère numérique

Quo vadis ouvre un espace de discussion franco-allemand pour les doctorantes et doctorants et les étudiants de master dont les projets s’inscrivent en histoire médiévale et/ou utilisent les méthodes des humanités numériques comme approches analytiques. Sur la base d’une publication scientifique sélectionnée, la méthode utilisée ou la théorie suivie dans le projet doit être présentée afin de discuter ensemble des problèmes qui découlent de son utilisation dans le cadre d’un travail scientifique, dans l’objectif de trouver des solutions à ceux-ci. L’objectif est de mettre en contact les jeunes chercheurs et chercheuses : les chercheurs présentent leurs projets ainsi qu’un article scientifique de la littérature, essentiel à leur recherche.

Cities in Transition

A review of historical discourses, planning decisions and conservation strategies

This interdisciplinary conference, realised by the Vienna University of Technology in cooperation with the University of Bamberg (KDWT), and the research network UrbanMetaMapping asks: Which phenomena in society, planning and heritage conservation accompanied historical transformation processes of cities and, above all, (how) did they interact? What insights can be drawn from the observation of historical processes and what can be derived from them for current developments? The focus of interest lies on historical processes of evaluation, selection, and planning in the historic building stock and the discourses of different players - individuals, institutions, or organisations - that accompanied these processes. Also to be examined are the effects of planning and conservation decisions not only on the built but also on the social structure of cities.

Mapping the Other

In Western space, mapping the Other is not a prescriptive notion to assign ossified identities. Rather, it is about questioning the link between these intersectional identities of otherness and the specificities of the various Western spaces. In other words, it invites a reconsideration of how the Others autonomously define themselves in the dominant and marginal spaces of the “normative order” of hegemonic societies, and how they integrate them to make them theirs—therefore challenging the systems of oppression implemented.

Judith Schalansky et le livre, mémoire du monde

Formée à l’histoire de l’art et au graphisme, Judith Schalansky (née en 1980 à Greifswald) crée des livres qui sont autant d’objets, une œuvre qui s’écrit et qui se lit à partir de l’histoire du livre et que Monika Schmitz-Emans classe parmi ce qu’elle appelle la « littérature du livre » (Buchliteratur). Ses ouvrages lui ont déjà valu de nombreux prix prestigieux en Allemagne comme à l’étranger, le dernier en date étant, tout récemment, le Wortmeldungen-Literaturpreis für kritische Kurztexte. Ce colloque, le premier consacré à l’œuvre de Judith Schalansky en France, explorera les différents enjeux de sa création à partir de l’objet livre.

Évolution du rôle et de la fonction du service diplomatique au XXe siècle

Cette journée d’étude explore le potentiel et les défis d’une étude approfondie des activités diplomatiques sur le « site de Paris » et de ses spécificités. Deux approches seront privilégiées : une approche biographique, axée sur les ambassadeurs et les diplomates, qui doit permettre de saisir l’importance de Paris en tant que lieu de la diplomatie allemande, notamment pour les carrières diplomatiques, les expériences professionnelles et la construction de leurs réseaux. Parallèlement, une approche systématique s’interroge sur le rapport de forces institutionnel au sein duquel les ambassadeurs agissaient.

Forms of coexistence and distinction in Rome's western provinces

L’Association pour l’archéologie romaine en Suisse (ARS) organise un colloque intitulé « La société provinciale romaine en question - Formes de coexistence et de distinction dans les provinces occidentales de Rome ». Sur ce thème longtemps réservé aux historiens et aux épigraphistes, l’archéologie pose un regard nouveau : quels indices matériels permettent l’identification de l’ordre social, tant à l’échelle du territoire, du site, que de l’individu ? C’est à ces questionnements essentiels que cette rencontre scientifique propose de répondre - ou du moins d’apporter quelques pistes de réflexion. 25 chercheuses et chercheurs originaires de Suisse, d’Allemagne, d’Autriche, de France, d’Espagne, du Royaume-Uni et des États-Unis sont attendus pour ces deux journées qui s’annoncent fructueuses.

The Visionary Drawing and its Knowledge: Orients

As the “Orient” became a central object of Western knowledge and representation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the workshop will examine the way in which visionary drawing took hold of it. It aspires to open up the approach to the visionary drawing in order to comprehend its participation in epistemological and philosophical changes of modern times. It seeks to renew the methods of art history by opening up to the intersecting history of artistic, scientific and political knowledge, which will encourage - beyond the definition of a visual culture - a reflection on their convergences and divergences in terms of images and graphic processes. It will thus focus on the way in which the visionary drawing of the 19th and 20th centuries participates in, or differs from, forms of visual orientalism already well studied in art history.

The visionary drawing and its knowledge

Portraits and faces

The workshop suggests to reflect on the transformations of the portrait and on the representation of the face in the visionary drawing of the 19^th and 20^th century. Associated with the research programme on the written and drawn archives of Théophile Bra (1797-1863) and supported by the University of Strasbourg Institute of Advanced Studies – USIAS, it aspires to open up the approach to the visionary drawing in order to comprehend its participation in epistemological and philosophical changes of modern times. It seeks to renew the methods of art history by including the history of science and of knowledge about the psyche, medicine and philosophy, which will encourage – beyond the definition of a visual culture – a reflection on the creativity they have in common in terms of images and graphic processes.

The Art Museum in the Digital Age

The Belvedere Research Center is continuing its conference series on the digital transformation of art museums with its fifth event on the topic. While the 2022 conference challenged binary concepts such as analog/ digital, this year’s event critically examines the imagined cultural metaverse. In four thematic online sessions and an on-site workshop, the lectures deal with the immersive experiences of virtuality and reality, cultural heritage data, value discourse surrounding the metaverse and NFTs, and self-perception and the social role of museums.

The Myth of Pentecost: literature, translation, theory, arts

While there are countless studies devoted to the readings, representations and interpretations of the biblical myth of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9), the rival narrative of the “miracle” of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) and its reception have received much less attention. This applies both to the exegesis of the Bible text and to its various adaptations in literature, art, theory and translate on studies. While the myth of Babel has generally given rise to pessimistic conceptions of linguistic diversity, the episode of the “tongues of fire” descending on the Apostles, transforming them into universal translators-interpreters, capable of speaking and being heard in languages they have not learned, suggests a different vision of multilingualism, language, meaning, or translatability.

Qui peut et doit décider si un texte doit être traduit, par qui, et dans quelle(s) langue(s) ? L’éditeur·e ? L’auteur·e ? Quels facteurs doivent jouer un rôle dans ces décisions : l’identité de l’auteur·e, son appartenance à un ou plusieurs groupes particuliers ? L’histoire d’une langue nationale est-elle pertinente ? Que penser, par exemple, du refus de l’auteure irlandaise Sally Rooney de collaborer avec des maisons d’édition israéliennes pour des raisons politiques, en empêchant ainsi de facto la traduction de ses œuvres ? Et, de manière générale, quels sont les rapports de force à l'œuvre dans l’acte de traduire ? C’est autour de cette question générale que s’articulera ce colloque, en évaluant les principaux modèles théoriques proposés pour penser la dimension politique de la traduction, à partir de pratiques concrètes, et dans une perspective interdisciplinaire.
