    Dante in the Risorgimento

In anticipation of the 700° anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death (September 2021), the journal “Il Risorgimento” intends to dedicate a monographic issue to the political, literary, historic, artistic and symbolic use of the poet during the period of National Unification. The cultural centrality of Dante in the first half of the Nineteenth century, not only in Italy, has been the subject of numerous specific research. “Il Risorgimento” is looking for new and original works, based on unknown or under-utilized sources. This is meant to widen interpretations, putting aside – if possible – those sources which solely position themselves through the lens of the Italian “genius”. The journal is not looking for a vain reproduction of a “canon”. Instead, the focus is on the documented presence of Dante in environments still unexplored in the civil and private life of Italians in the years of the struggle for Independence.

    Becoming the work

Body reification practices in exhibitions and museums

What can one comprehend from these bodies from past and present who exhibit themselves with or in the place of the works? And from these images and the stories that testify to them? Can their poses be linked to a desire for identification and appropriation, for conservation, or on the contrary one for vivification and critique, or mere playfulness? In what regard do they oblige us to rethink the dialectic that unites the subject with the object and which unites social groups between each other as well as singularities? This colloquium aspires to find answers to these questions by focusing on exhibitionary apparatuses developed by the artists and museums as well as those that audiences have appropriated in various eras. Taking specific and exemplary cases as a starting point, the event will seek, for example, to envisage the contribution of the tableau vivant, mirror, diorama and the zoo, reenactment, performance and choreography, analog and digital recording, selfie, mobile apps or dissemination platforms about the practices, their development and agency. In short, this colloquium sets out to revisit certain foundations of the museum and of exhibitionary practice in order to include within it an ontological reflection on the conservation and representation of the person.

Covid-19, the world after: deconstructing to reconstruct relationships with the remainder of life

    Dominion of the Sacred

Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)

Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

    Disinformation in the Middle East

Special issue of "Open Information Science"

Similar to other regions around the world, the Middle East has witnessed the widespread of misinformation in relation to different issues like politics, health, and armed conflicts. This is, indeed, not a recent phenomenon as the region has been plagued by infodemics for many decades. Recent reports and data releases by Facebook and Twitter show that there are several systematic and coordinated activities that occur in the Middle East in order to support regional players like Saudi Arabia and the UAE in enhancing their political influence in the region. There is a need to study infodemics in some specific geographical contexts like the Middle East due to the evolving nature of this phenomenon, and this special issue is focused on the examination of recent case studies involving the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

Illness as Metaphor in the Latin Middle Ages

    Leeds International Medieval Congress 2021

The session seeks to provide a forum for scholars to reflect on the variation and functions of metaphors of illness in the Latin writing of the Middle Ages. We encourage papers that investigate how the imagery of morbus, pestilentia, gangraena etc. structured individual experience and how it shaped self-knowledge and practices of communities. We invite original contributions that critically examine the role that Latin metaphors of illness played in medieval discourse as a tool of explaining reality and as a rhetorical device used to impose specific world views.

    Rethinking translation

Now that the scientific and political issues of our society belong to a world-system (Wallerstein, Arrighi, Amin), translation plays more than ever a central role in the circulation of texts and ideas. Translating is a cognitive and social activity that informs the way we relate to reality and to others. It implies a particular worldview and has cognitive, social, ethical and political effects. From this perspective, thinking and practicing translation as a neutral operation is a form of denial of its ethical and political significance. A model of translation as a simple transfer of meaning from one text to another is not acceptable given the complexity of the factors and actors involved. Hence the need to rethink translation in the light of contemporary issues.

Borders in the Americas – Integration, Security and Migrations

In the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, many analysts and experts argued that the world had reached the “end of history” [Fukuyama, 1992] and that regional and local organizations and free trade agreements (among which the European Union appeared to be a model of integration) signaled the emergence of a world without borders. Yet, thirty years later, the reality seems to be altogether different. Today, it is clear that “borders are back”. Whether these borders are challenged, violated, transcended, consolidated, or integrated, they remain necessarily at the heart of the political debate. This symposium will focus on a specific geographic area: the Americas.
