International workshop
Our workshop aims to shed light on the various actors and institutions who shaped the field of prehistory from the 19th century until our days. They will allow us to grasp the establishment and development of prehistoric international and local networks on the longue durée. We encourage participants to address the socio-political and cultural contexts in which prehistory was practiced and knowledge produced. Many answers to the above questions and topics of research may be uncovered in personal, institutional, and administrative archives, while others are revealed in excavation reports. This brings us to the last section of our workshop: what sources for the history of Prehistory and how can they be used? Has the writing of a renewed history of the discipline affected today’s research and how?

Understanding Gradients of Political Engagements
Citizenship and Identity in South Asia
Historian and political scientists of South Asia have been dealing with the ascent of postcolonial state and the form of citizenships in South Asia. The meteoric rise of postcolonial theory, subaltern school of historiography to be precise made efforts in bringing the role of ideas and culture in shaping state, community and political narratives. Notwithstanding these insights still this literature failed to bring in one very important thing; a comparative lens to study informal politics in the region. The social transformation and process of democratization has appeared to be inching ahead across the region from Nepal to Bangladesh. Therefore, increasingly a cross country perspective is required combining interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies (qualitative, quantitative) to develop a comparative perspective of way social and cultural factors influence informal politics in South Asia.

Travelling Matters: rereading, reshaping, reusing objects across the Mediterranean
The workshop “Travelling matters: rereading, reshaping, reusing objects across the Mediterranean” intends to tackle objects as sources and subjects of the history of cross-cultural encounters in innovative ways. We intend to discuss a most diverse array of objects flowing in all directions and to concentrate on the “second-handedness” of displaced objects: how and why moving objects acquire new functions and new meanings, and with what consequences for the relations between the communities involved? These perspectives demand a broad chronology, extending from antiquity to the present-day, and for the intersection between different time frames, from the relatively narrow scale of individual objects being displaced across the Mediterranean to the much larger one of the histories of their reinterpretation and repurposing.

In order to pave the way for the writing of a global history of Indochinese ports under colonial rule, a two-day international conference will be held October 27-28, 2022 at the University of Đà Nẵng in Việt Nam. Turkish Journal of History (Tarih Dergisi)
For this special issue of Tarih Dergisi, the Turkish Journal of History, we invite original research addressing questions arising from travel to, in, and from the Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic. Essays may focus on the place of travel writing in historiography. They may also address any and all aspects of travel. We particularly welcome studies of travel works in any format – books, manuscripts, letters, diaries, journals, reports, log-books, cartography, web-blogs – by Ottoman, Turkish, Arab, Asiatic and African travellers of any period. Essays need not, however, be restricted to conventional travelogues by individual travellers. We welcome studies concerned with modes of travel (pedestrianism, equestrian travel, trains, cars, planes, boats), and with questions involving mass travel (migrancy, nomadism, deportation).

Japarchi research network seminars, 2019-2020
Le séminaire annuel « Spatialité au Japon » du réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi se poursuit en 2019. En s’intéressant à un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’« encyclopédie ouverte » publiée en 2014 Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Les interventions prennent appui et se concentrent sur un terme ou une expression. Cette année les entrées thématiques proposées portaient sur : 1) la notion de paysage au Japon, 2) des termes désignant des lieux, moments, rituels associés à l’hospitalité et à sa spatialisation (architecture, ville, milieu rural, paysage, jardin), dans l’histoire et aujourd’hui, 3) la notion d’espaces publics au Japon et de l’ensemble des termes et expressions usuels propres à qualifier ces espaces et définir leurs usages, 4) la ville et l’architecture soutenables, 5) les mobilités urbaines 6) la rétraction urbaine 7) les effets du tourisme dans les espaces.

The collapse of empires in the XXth century: new States and new identities
Le passé revisité à travers le prisme de la relecture des histoires nationales et de la construction de nouvelles identités
Le XXe siècle a été marqué par l’intensification du processus de changements politiques. Les révolutions, les deux guerres mondiales, la décolonisation, la fin de la guerre froide, la chute de l’Union soviétique et la disparition du bloc socialiste ont réorganisé l’équilibre des forces dans le monde donnant naissance à plusieurs nouveaux États. Il s’agit de s’interroger sur quels fondements culturels et politiques les nouveaux États ont été reconstruits et comment ils ont tenté de construire de nouveaux États-nations. Ce processus est inéluctablement lié à une nouvelle interprétation du passé souvent, pour ne pas dire toujours, axée sur l’ethnocentrisme à degrés variables. Dans le processus de création de nouvelles histoires nationales, il est pertinent de prendre en considération l’appropriation des mouvements nationalistes prise par les pouvoirs officiels soucieux de rallier et de plaire aux populations sensibles aux idées d’extrême droite. Comment évoluent les rapports avec le passé impérial / colonial ? Se manifestent-ils souvent à travers la formule : « histoires nationales versus histoires impériales » ?

Chercheur·e·s libanais·es, syrien·nne·s ? Jordannien·ne·s et Français·es ont produit et mobilisé des corpus de notes et carnets de terrain ou de fouilles, photographies, films et enregistrements sonores, sites web... Ces ensembles constituent des collections qui sont susceptibles d'éclairer l'histoire de la région et d'aider à la compréhension du temps présent. Ces collections restent pourtant souvent difficilement accessibles, parfois même inconnues du monde académique et culturel et bien plus encore des différents publics concernés.

Le but est d'entamer une réflexion sur l'hérésie comme catégorie conceptuelle en histoire et en histoire des religions, avec une vaste ouverture chronologique (de l'Antiquité au XIXe siècle) et géographique (Japon et Europe). Selon la méthode comparatiste, il s’agira d’affiner ou de nuancer la compréhension de son propre domaine en se confrontant à une matière différente. Une telle approche permettra de proposer de nouvelles perspectives afin de dépasser les acquis de domaines restés longtemps en vase clos. Cette conférence s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet de recherche Pouvoir, hérésie et religion dans l'Occident et le Japon médiéval : étude comparée mené à l'université de Neuchâtel soutenu par le Fonds national suisse de la recherche scientifique (FNS).
