Call for papers - Representation
The aim of this Study day is to examine the dynamics, interactions and tensions between the polysemic notions of margin and mainstream in post-1945 English-speaking areas. More specifically, we will examine the modalities and dynamics of exchange and movement from one category to the other, as well as the way in which they take on their meaning in varied and variable political, media, sociological and cultural contexts. Proposals may thus highlight thematic issues in relation to the phenomena studied, such as marginalised or militant histories, critical or methodological thoughts about mediation mechanisms, conceptualisation issues or personal and collective positioning.

The Armenian Genocide: New Interpretations and Cross-Disciplinary Conversations
The study of the Armenian genocide often remains confined to restricted circles of specialists and interdisciplinarity is too rarely promoted. And, although comparative research is praised, it is frequently reduced to the juxtaposition of case studies. Research on the Armenian genocide is now ready to address more cross-cutting issues and to fully contribute to broader discussions on mass violence. Therefore, this conference asks: how can the social sciences, memory studies, and genocide studies contribute to a broader understanding of the Armenian genocide and its aftermath? And reciprocally: what is the contribution of research on the Armenian genocide to our understanding of mass crimes and to the social sciences?

La valeur des vivants dans l’Occident médiéval (Ve-XVe siècle)
In the framework of a study day, we propose to reflect on the values accorded to living beings (humans and animals) in the medieval West from the 5th to the 15th century. They are characterised by their market, utilitarian and symbolic value. In addition to this, there are the considerations and knowledge that medieval people had of their fellow human beings and their environment (fauna and trees). Finally, the event proposes to look at these questions in the context of reflections on medievalism. As the issues are diverse, we are making the whole range of humanities and social sciences disciplines.

The journal Perspective : actualité en histoire de l'art will explore, in its 2024 – 2 issue, the thematic “extreme bodies”. Our aim is to shed light on the ways images participate in the creation of the body, the spread of a standard and the constraints applied to that body in order to achieve the standard, but also the ways images sometimes serve to subvert them. It is thus in terms of the standardised body, considered more as a model or goal to be attained than as the aurea mediocritas (Horace, Odes, II, X, 5), the incarnation of the middle ground remote from excesses, that we would like to address questions related to extreme bodies.

Communist Perspectives on Atheism in the 20th Century
In recent years, scholars in historical and secular studies have become increasingly interested in communist attitudes towards religion, communist regimes’ efforts to uproot religion, and interactions between Marxists and Christians. Sponsored by the Explaining Atheism programme, this conference will explore transnational communist perspectives on atheism in the twentieth century and Marxist-inspired attempts to explain and influence the evolution of atheism. Building on work on “scientific atheism”, “atheist establishments” and “thought collectives”, the conference explores differences and commonalities within the Soviet bloc – within which scholarly debates on atheism took place in what might be called a limited international scientific community.

Retour sur cinquante ans de jeux de rôle
Publié pour la première fois en 1974, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) est considéré comme le premier jeu de rôle (JDR), marquant les débuts d’un nouveau genre de loisir. Il constitue le premier succès qui distingue immédiatement le jeu de rôle (sur table) en tant que catégorie de jeux à part entière, différente des wargames dont il est au départ une variation. Une communauté de joueurs se développe et devient rapidement très importante, ce qui incite la publication d’autres jeux de cette catégorie. Cinquante ans plus tard, en 2024, les jeux de rôle sont fortement présents au sein de l’offre ludique. Le domaine s’est élargi et les jeux se sont multipliés, touchant à de nombreux genres de la fiction. À l’occasion de cet anniversaire, ce colloque souhaite revenir sur les cinq décennies de Dungeons & Dragons et des jeux de rôle et, plus largement, sur l’histoire de ce loisir et sur ses enjeux sociaux et culturels.

Quel fut le rôle politique joué par les princes et princesses du sang en France entre le retour en grâce du prince de Condé en 1661 et la fin de la monarchie (1848) ? Telle est la question centrale posée par ce colloque international qui propose de faire le point des apports historiographiques récents et des chantiers en cours sur la question. Au-delà d’une étude de la France d’Ancien Régime, nous désirons par ce colloque ouvrir des perspectives comparatives. Quelles spécificités le règlement de la succession au trône de France et le statut de princes du sang en résultant entraînèrent-ils pour les idées et pratiques politiques ? D’autres conceptions de la place des membres de la famille royale mènent-elles à d’autres configurations politiques et sociales ? Nous désirons comparer la place et les activités des princes et princesses du sang dans l’Ancien Régime français avec celles de la première moitié du XIXe siècle et leurs équivalents dans d’autres États.

Bâtis et habitats forestiers d’hier et d’aujourd’hui
Les activités de pâturage, de chasse, d’artisanat et de proto-industrie, ont très majoritairement retenu l’attention des chercheurs travaillant sur la thématique de la forêt. En revanche, les « hommes des bois » qu’ils soient bûcherons, charbonniers, sabotiers, gardes forestiers, bien que cités par les historiens, demeurent globalement méconnus. L’objectif de cette journée d’étude du Groupe d’histoire des forêts françaises (GHFF) est de s’intéresser aux structures bâties, sommaires et modestes ou plus élaborées, qui ont émaillé, sous une forme ou une autre, les paysages forestiers. Objets délaissés, il s’agit surtout de dresser un état des lieux tant des sources disponibles que des études déjà menées, et permettre ainsi de proposer de nouvelles recherches et synthèses.

This international and multidisciplinary colloquium welcomes contributions that link legal discourses and gender studies, from the legal disciplines as well as from the humanities and social sciences. It is structured around three axes: (1) critical epistemology of law in the light of gender and intersectionality; (2) methods of gender and intersectional analysis and heuristic tools developed for discourse analysis; (3) research results of gender and intersectional analysis of legal texts, primary or secondary.

La « Révolution des Œillets », révolution portugaise et mondiale
Dossier spécial de la revue Lusotopie sur le Cinquantenaire du 25 avril 1974
Le 24 avril 1974 au soir, les désormais célèbres « capitaines d’avril » commencèrent leur coup d’État au nom d’un programme simple, celui des « trois D » : décoloniser, démocratiser, développer. Il s’agissait surtout de mettre fin à près de quatorze ans de guerre coloniale, une guerre qui ne pouvait pas être gagnée militairement, qui isolait le Portugal sur la scène internationale, brûlait près la moitié du budget de l’État et poussait la jeunesse à prendre le chemin de l’exil pour éviter de partir au combat. Cinquante ans après le 25 avril 1974, Lusotopie publie un dossier spécial pour étudier les aspects de cette révolution qui pourraient avoir été sous-étudiés.

La face cachée des êtres, des faits et des objets dans le contexte franco-allemand
Le premier colloque « Les oublié(e)s et les invisibles dans le contexte franco-allemand des XIXe et XXe siècles », qui s’est tenu en juin 2022 à Angers, avait comme objectif de rappeler le souvenir de personnes, de faits et d’œuvres ignorés, tombés dans l’oubli, volontairement (ou non) escamotés. La publication est en cours. Ce deuxième colloque s’inscrit dans une démarche quelque peu différente. Il s’agit cette fois-ci de détecter, débusquer, dévoiler des facettes et des aspects ignorés de personnages, de faits ou d’œuvres déjà connus, toujours dans un contexte franco-allemand, c’est-à-dire dans le cadre des relations de la France avec les mondes germaniques, à toutes les époques. Dans ce cadre il pourrait donc même être question de développer une nouvelle approche d’une thématique qui paraît déjà avoir été bien explorée.

Natural Rights and Politics in the Early Modern Period
Despite the ubiquity of the idea of human rights in our political culture, and its strong presence in the work of political scientists, jurists and contemporary historians, scholarly interest in natural rights — the tradition from which human rights are drawn — remains sporadic and fragmentary. This interdisciplinary workshop aims to deepen and broaden our understanding of the political uses and development of natural rights in the Early Modern Period, in Europe, the Atlantic world and beyond. By interrogating the relationship between natural rights and politics, this will be an occasion not only to analyze natural rights as a theoretical concept, but also and above all to study the different uses of concepts drawn from natural rights in precise political contexts, the political projects they served, their relationship with republicanism, and the emergence and evolution of particular rights.

In the notebooks of a scholar travelling in Ethiopia
Transcribing and editing the notebooks of Antoine d’Abbadie (mid-19th century)
During the decade of 1840, a French scientist, Antoine d'Abbadie, traveled to the Horn of Africa. Self-funded, he made numerous scientific observations that he recorded in some twenty notebooks. The MSS-Abbadie project, part of the BnF's four-year research program (2020-23), has been working to make this profusion of notes accessible by digitizing the originals, depositing them on Gallica, describing the manuscripts, and offering them for collaborative transcription on the Transcrire platform. This call for participation invites the contributors who took part in this crowdsourcing adventure to return some of the knowledge acquired during this transcription work, as well as to testify about it and the working methods that were experienced. It remains wide open to researchers from outside the project who can provide a fresh look at both the historical context and the new approaches currently being applied to this type of corpus and situations.

À l’image de la polysémie du paysage, la trilogie des journées d’étude sur les paysages ruraux a été conçue pour rassembler des chercheurs de différents champs : historiens, géographes, historiens de la littérature, linguistes, archéologues, juristes, dans une démarche transdisciplinaire. Les premières journées ont eu pour thème «l’utilisation du sol », les deuxièmes « l’organisation de l’espace ». En maintenant la volonté de transdisciplinarité et « trans-chronie » nous proposons la troisième et dernière rencontre : perception, représentation, patrimonialisation. Nous réfléchirons sur la dimension cognitive, symbolique et culturelle des paysages ruraux ainsi que sur les questions patrimoniales qui y sont associées.

Cette revue de jeunes chercheurs permet aux masterants, doctorants et jeunes diplômés en histoire de promouvoir leurs recherches.

Peasantries and Violent Conflicts
In this call for papers, we wish to address the relationship between the peasantry and conflicts with all the necessary analytical finesse and empiricism, by exploring the plurality of repertoires and modes of action to identify the contextual markers of the trajectories of violent crises involving the peasantry to varying degrees and in various forms. What we mean by violent conflict is any form of confrontation mobilizing a diversified arsenal, with a destructive effect on the agricultural, economic, and social systems in place, and with at times the aim of reconfiguring them to the advantage of certain actors. Such conflicts may be internal to certain peasantries, or may occur at their contact when they are exploited by external actors. Others may take shape and develop outside the rural world before reaching it. These violent conflicts are often found at the crossroads of a range of factors and processes: power dynamics linked to land access, the crystallization of identity and ethno-community differences, and governance problems.

La spécificité critique du féminisme
Comment une conception critique de l’histoire qui se veut libératrice entretient-elle pourtant l’effacement des femmes ? Et en retour, comment le féminisme se pose-t-il en outil critique des théories libératrices ? La revue L'Homme et la Société invite les auteurs de toutes les disciplines des sciences sociales et humaines à s’interroger sur ces questions en prenant pour objet les théories qui découlent du progressisme du XVIIIe siècle : le marxisme et le discours républicain, leur impact sur le féminisme et comment le féminisme leur répond sur un plan théorique comme pratique.
