    Summer School - History

Summer University dedicated to Food and Drink Studies

Since 2003, our summer university has positionned itself as a leading platform for reflection on new research in Food Studies. After several thematic editions, this 2024 edition will continue its ambition to provide a resolutely broad overview of these fields of research from a multidisciplinary perspective. Over the last twenty years or so, new themes have emerged and given new impetus to research in food studies. How do they fit together within the various disciplines of humanities and social sciences, from anthropology and history to sociology and literary studies ? How can young researchers position themsleves in relation to the wide-ranging possibilities offered by this field of research ? Leading specialists from different disciplinary backgrounds will address these questions through the prism of their own research.

Armenian Diaspora(s) in Motion: Places, Stakeholders and Practices in the 21st Century

Since diaspora studies emerged in the 1980s, the Armenian dispersion has played a prominent role in the scholarly literature seeking to understand and classify the nature, forms, and effects of diasporas as social formations. However, 40 years after the rise of diaspora studies, one has to admit that far from offering a stable paradigm, the Armenian diaspora (an expression that should be used in the plural) has undergone numerous transformations. The objective of this 2-day conference will be to reflect on these contemporary reshapings of the Armenian diaspora(s), revealing their diversity and the new dynamics at work.

Reclaiming Spaces: Spatiality and the (Re)occupation of Spaces in the French and Francophone World

    ASMCF Annual Conference 2023

The 2023 Association for the study of modern and contemporary France (ASMCF) annual conference will seek to explore the concept of spatiality: the physical and social dimensions of space and how they shape our experiences, identities, and cultures. The theme builds on last year’s conference on “presence, absence, hybridity”  and interrogates the occupation of spaces as a means to understand modern and contemporary French and Francophone cultures and identities. This is of particular importance at a time when people are (re)occupying spaces that had been restricted during the covid-19 pandemic and reflecting on the new relation to space brought about by this crisis.

Metropolitan and suburban cities: Past, present and future

    مدينة "مقرين" نموذجا

With the urban development that the world has witnessed since the late nineteenth century in parallel with the industrial development, and the increase in the movement of migration and displacement towards the major industrial cities around the world, the latter became crowded with population and expanded form contemporary metropolises, absorbing most of the jobs and major administrative, social and economic spaces. This caused a serious economic, social and development confusion for the countries experiencing the phenomenon, and a clear regional disparity between its depths and peripheries and between its cities and countryside. Its homogeneous balance was disturbed, and it turned into a sweeping polar cities because of the small cities and villages around it, with its acquired social and economic weight, thus affecting the local, regional and even the international geopolitical and geo-economics balances.

Towards a good life society: when interdependencies confront atomism

In 2018, the Forum's scientific symposium dealt with the collective definition of the well-living (or the good life, among other terms), the methods and uses of good life indicators, along with citizen participation and the contribution of research to the good life. Building on these achievements, the second edition of the scientific symposium aims to go a step further towards exploring how a paradigm shift in favor of the good life might be supported, by emphasizing the topic of interdependencies.

    Undergound Atmospheres. Renewing the debate

This special issue of Ambiances aims to highlight shared topics and possible bridges between actors who usually operate on different scales. We encourage reflections questioning the stakes and methods of the construction of inhabited space in its verticality by reintroducing the question of the underground, not as a soffit but as a living and evolving interface. The issue invites researchers, practitioners of the operational world and designers from different fields, who will share their work on the questions of undergrounds and ambiances – built, experienced and lived by humans – by highlighting case studies, in-situexperiences and new methodological tools. This call is organised around three, non-exclusive thematic lines open for articles from urban studies, architecture, engineering, humanities and social sciences.

    Still on the Map!

Mississippi Delta Communities Facing Disappearing Land

"Still on the Map!" takes as its context the Mississippi Delta fifteen years after Hurricane Katrina and about five years after the commissioning of the major new "100-year" flood protection infrastructure. Expressed from its title -a statement of resistance/resilience chanted by many inhabitants during ecological events in Louisiana- this research project aims to describe the links and "attachments" (LATOUR, 2017) that different communities in the delta maintain with their geographical environment in a situation of strong ecological tipping point, integrating the natural and artificial infrastructures of the watershed into the definition of ecosystems as socio-political actors in their own right. In a context where the delta's land is gradually sinking into the sea, every hour the surface area of a football pitch is permanently flooded.
