Framing the Virtual: New Technologies and Immersive Exhibitions
As our lives and planet continue to be shaped by complex technological materials, systems and processes, the practices of technology and media-engaged artists are vital to understanding what lies behind the ‘front end’ of our contemporary digital condition. Although diverse in scope, new materialist philosophies share a common approach to flat ontologies that invite thinking across human, nonhuman, virtual and material actors connected via networks of agency, affect, power and desire. These terms provide a powerful way to counter the immaterial malaise as well as the disconnect between our planet and technological existence.

While it is difficult to assess fully something that is still unfolding, PLURIEL 4th International Congress aims to provide a forum for the discussion and evaluation of the reception of the Document on Human Fraternity on the occasion of its 5th anniversary. What has been the impact so far of the Document on Human Fraternity concerning the coexistence of Christians and Muslims around the globe? As in previous editions, the Congress will bring together the perspectives of scholars of multiple disciplines. It will be organized according to three main areas of analysis, while allowing for overlaps: sociojuridical, geopolitical, theological-dialogical.

From the disconnected letters to the science of letters: a meeting of knowledges in the Middle East
In order to interpret the disconnected letters of the Qur’an (ḥurūf muqaṭṭa‘a), Muslim thinkers have based their work on esoteric concepts, sometimes handed down from Antiquity, which have flourished in Islamic lands under the name of the science of letters (‘ilm al-ḥurūf). This international symposium aims to study the various representations of the mysterious letters within the wider framework of the science of letters, and to put them in perspective against similar readings from languages and cultures close to Arabic. Part of the symposium will be held in the historic citadel of Erbil in the heart of ancient Mesopotamia, “the land of the two rivers”, the cradle of early writing.

Les séries télévisées sous le scalpel des sciences humaines
Depuis deux décennies, les séries télévisées s’affirment à l’échelle mondiale en tant qu’objet culturel. L’objectif de la thématique de ce numéro est de croiser les regards des chercheurs issus des humanités autour des écritures sérielles. Les auteurs sont appelés à s’intéresser à ce nouveau matériau en analysant par exemple les personnages, la gestion spatio-temporelle, la fonction des paysages, la production du scénario, au public-cible… de manière à croiser les regards disciplinaires sur ce nouveau produit culturel que la recherche marginalise.

Cet appel est ouvert aux artistes et chercheurs de tous les pays et de toutes les nationalités de la région MENA (Moyen-Orient et Afrique du Nord) et sa diaspora. La chaire Mahmoud Darwich, Bozar, la fondation A. M. Qattan, la fondation Camargo et le Mucem unissent leurs forces pour lancer le premier appel à candidatures en l’honneur de l’héritage du poète palestinien Mahmoud Darwich. Cet appel a pour but d’encourager les résonances contemporaines de l’œuvre du poète palestinien Mahmoud Darwich et de ses influences sur la création artistique et intellectuelle dans le monde contemporain arabe,européen et méditerranéen. Ce premier appel à candidatures est accompagné d’un propos curatorial d’Elia Suleiman.

Call for papers - Epistemology and methodology
Le 4 août 2020, à 18h07, au Liban, une double explosion secoue le port de Beyrouth. 2 700 tonnes de nitrate d'ammonium partent en fumée, dévastant sur leur chemin des quartiers entiers. Plus de 200 morts, plus de 6000 blessés, plus de 7000 familles se retrouvant sans abri : tel est le triste bilan de cette catastrophe. En prenant appui sur cet évènement mais sans vouloir s’y limiter, ce numéro d’InteraXXIons se propose d’interroger cette thématique à la lumière des sciences humaines. À travers l’histoire, plusieurs catastrophes semblables ont eu lieu (à Toulouse, à Fukushima, à Gênes, à Tchernobyl…). Au-delà de la lamentation, de la fascination, de la sidération, de la déploration, du ressentiment, que diffuse la catastrophe ?

The Multidisciplinary Grid 2020 Conference
The conference is aimed at examining the ‘grid’ as a cross-disciplinary theme with a multiplicity of expressions in terms of definitions, concepts, perceptions, representations, and histories. The ‘grid’ has played a significant role in shaping the spatial imaginaries of a wide range of fields: from Hippodamus of Miletus to the Cartesian revolution in mathematics, from the visual arts to archaeology to 'smart cities' and artificial intelligence. As the 'grid' has become an all-encompassing term, signifying a vast array of infrastructural and communication networks through which contemporary life is mediated and controlled, it is commonly viewed as a quintessential symbol of modernity. The conference strives to explore a new horizon of relationships and fusion of the ‘grids’ in these areas as manifested between humans, between machines, and between humans and machines ‒ bridging philosophical, cultural, pedagogical, technical and ethical issues.

Japanese spatiality (Japarchi) - 2020-2021

Le séminaire annuel « Spatialité au Japon » du réseau scientifique thématique JAPARCHI a repris à l’automne 2018. En s’intéressant à un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’« encyclopédie ouverte » publiée en 2014 : Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Cette année, les entrées thématiques portent : 1) sur la notion d’informel dans l’actualité de l’espace. Cette notion apporte un renouvellement conceptuel et pratique utile pour aborder les questions de transitions, de ville soutenable et également de crises, 2) sur les notions de paysage au Japon avec une deuxième journée d’étude 3) les jardins japonais en France, c’est-à-dire sur la présence/l'empreinte/la réception/l’influence du Japon dans le paysagisme en France, avec une première journée d’étude 4) sur le patrimoine architectural, urbain et paysager dans la ville japonaise d’aujourd’hui.

Languages and translation: cognitive stakes
Al-Kīmiyā, the journal of the languages and translation faculty at the Saint-Joseph University of Beirut (issue 19)
La thématique retenue pour le numéro 19 d’Al-Kīmiyā est : « Langues et traduction : enjeux cognitifs ». Depuis quelques décennies, les recherches en sciences cognitives s’intéressent aux processus d’apprentissage en explorant le phénomène de la plasticité cérébrale. Les progrès s’avèrent aujourd’hui réels et incontournables. Les principes fondamentaux de l’apprentissage, ou ce que Stanislas Dehaene appelle les piliers de l’apprentissage, sont bien définis et nécessitent une adaptation, une remise en question, voire une révolution des pratiques d’enseignement. L’enseignement des langues et de la traduction/interprétation ne fait pas exception à cette nouvelle donne. De plus, les recherches descriptives se multiplient pour étudier les processus de traduction et d’interprétation ainsi que ceux des phénomènes linguistiques tels que le bilinguisme ou le plurilinguisme sous l’éclairage des sciences cognitives.

C’est pourquoi ce seminaire abordera les pensées de la nature, la notion de vie dans la pensée européenne et japonaise, et comment ces notions prennent forme, circulent, sont adaptées et participent des transformations sociales.

Nous invitons les chercheur·e·s, les doctorant·e·s et éventuellement les étudiant·e·s en master 2 à venir présenter leur travail sur la spatialité au Japon lors des séances du séminaire annuel. Nous attendons une réflexion en cours sur les mots, leurs significations, le contexte de leur énonciation et usages. Les champs disciplinaires convoqués au sujet de l’espace et de la spatialité au Japon sont : architecture, paysage, géographie, anthropologie de l’espace, sociologie, urbanisme, études urbaines, histoire et arts.

The literature on pop culture in the Arabian Peninsula is particularly thin. While a rich scholarship has analyzed oral culture and vernacular poetry, less ink was spilled on those forms of culture that use new media, from tape recording to mobile phone aps and from TV production to YouTube. This issue of Arabian Humanities seeks to fill that gap and to analyze pop culture in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

Data sharing between Lebanon, Jordan and Syria
Les chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales qui ont choisi le Proche-Orient comme terrain d'investigation scientifique depuis le XIXe siècle ont constitué des fonds documentaires comprenant tous les types de sources. Chercheur·e·s libanais·es, syrien·nne·s ? Jordannien·ne·s et Français·es ont produit et mobilisé des corpus de notes et carnets de terrain ou de fouilles, photographies, films et enregistrements sonores, sites web... Ces ensembles constituent des collections qui sont susceptibles d'éclairer l'histoire de la région et d'aider à la compréhension du temps présent. Ces collections restent pourtant souvent difficilement accessibles, parfois même inconnues du monde académique et culturel et bien plus encore des différents publics concernés.

Le réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi s’est concentré sur la définition d’un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon ; ce travail fut matérialisé par la publication en 2014 du Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Le séminaire annuel Japarchi, qui va reprendre à l’automne 2018, souhaite s’inscrire dans la continuité de cette « encyclopédie ouverte » avec des interventions prenant appui et se concentrant sur un terme, une expression, un toponyme. Ces entrées thématiques concernent des dispositifs ou des agencements matériels, construits ou se déployant dans le territoire ; des notions ou des concepts relevant de l’architecture, de l’urbanisme ou du paysage ; des acteurs ou actrices qui agissent dans ou avec l’espace.

What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.

Beginnings, Genesis and Creation in the Art of the VXth and XVIth Centuries
This conference seeks to introduce a variety of different approaches and interpretations of the concept of “origins” within the visual arts during the Renaissance. However, to consider the question of origins necessitates establishing a distinction between an original beginning such as the creation of the world, an event which initiated historical time, and the symbolic exercises of re-creation that follow it. These phenomena of echo or aemulatio are defined by their manifest desire to capture the primal energy of the original beginning. Such re-creations attempt to reproduce the vitality inherent in the original beginning, and are characterized, above all, by a fundamental desire to reestablish a link to an ideal and initial origin.

Indonesian Exceptionalism: Values and Morals of the Middle Ground
‘Exceptionalism’ is a borrowed political term that implies that a country or entity is somehow special. Indonesia is not small. Indonesia is not poor in cultures, religions, society, or ethnic groups. Indonesia is not unimportant economically, regionally, or politically. Historically, Indonesia has always been an exceptional place. Indonesia as ‘imagined community’ continues to be an ongoing process. Various questions that can be raised include: What are relevant Indonesian values and morals for maintaining Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global world? What is religion’s contribution to forming agreed values and ethics? To what extent is there an Indonesian contribution in balancing Islamic values and democratic practices? How do religious values impact the ethics of state governance?
