Residues of the Past: (De)constructing urban histories
2023 IRS Summer School
The focus of the summer school is to examine how historical strata have been understood, constructed, and interpreted in different European cities from the post-war period to the present day. On the one hand, the participants will learn how historic buildings were integrated into the post-war reconstruction plans on both sides of the “Iron Curtain”. On the other hand, we will discuss how historical authenticity has been established in the preservation of monuments and what might have been overlooked in the process. Finally, participants will debate how people (individually and in groups) remember and what this means for our understanding of the past. The students should also investigate how digital methods can help to understand today’s memory landscapes.

XXVe séminaire d’histoire de l’art Vénitien (2022)
Née modestement de la rencontre du sable et de l’eau, Venise a crû, en un miracle, jusqu’à devenir au fil du temps « le plus prodigieux événement urbanistique existant sur terre » (Le Corbusier). Cet essaim d’édifices posés en îlots compose aussi un mirage de pierre tant la cité de bâtisseurs s’est heurtée à l’éloignement de toute bonne carrière de pierre, obligeant à recourir à la pierre plutôt en parement sur des structures de briques, et à se tourner naturellement vers le remploi de pierres d’anciens monuments. Étudier les Pierres de Venise (1851), c’est donc revenir sur l’histoire d’un défi constructif et architectural, depuis la quête et l’acheminement des matériaux, des ruines d’Altino aux carrières d’Istrie, et l’organisation des métiers lapidaires (tagiapiera, scultori, terrazzieri), jusqu’à la réalisation des façades, ponts, puits, margelles, escaliers…

Montrer, chercher : l’art brut à l’épreuve de l’archive
L’université d’été de la bibliothèque Kandinsky est un programme du centre Pompidou qui se déroule dans l’espace des collections permanentes du musée national d’art moderne. Elle a pour objet les sources de l’art moderne et contemporain : archives, documentation écrite, photographique ou filmique, témoignages, formes de production documentaire par les artistes. La huitième édition de cette rencontre annuelle et interdisciplinaire, sera dédiée aux sources de l’art brut et à la diversité des figures de « passeurs » et « découvreurs » (médecins, chercheurs, collectionneurs, artistes, galeristes…) impliquées dans la documentation, la collecte, la diffusion et la reconnaissance de l’art brut.

Les traces du passé constituent les buttes-témoins (des témoins) d’événements historiques à jamais révolus : elles rendent présent ce qui appartient au passé et l’incarnent de manière non intentionnelle. Elles sont parfois l’objet d’un réinvestissement symbolique qui les désigne en marques, caractérisées par une signature intentionnelle de la part d’un acteur identifiable. L’enjeu est ici d’historiciser les usages des traces et des monuments selon les périodes considérées et de les situer dans un contexte local précis afin d’en repérer d’éventuelles singularités. Le jeu des circulations, des imitations dans l’espace euro-américain fera l’objet d’une attention particulière.

What is european history in the 21st century?
Summer school in global and transnational history
In the nearly half century since the EUI History Department was established, the contours of European history have shifted away from nation-based or comparative approaches. The department now defines itself a center for the study of transnational, global and comparative history. All of these approaches are implicitly about creating a new history of Europe, but how are they accomplishing this goal? What is the outlook for the future of this project? This summer school is devoted to asking, “What is European History in the 21st Century?” As historians call for the decolonization of history, and, simultaneously, face the historical distortions encouraged by resurgent populist nationalisms, reflection on the possibilities and problems of European history have never seemed more urgent.

Choisir l’entrée « Introduction à la problématisation de l’après Shoah » pour l’université d’été de 2022 c’est d’emblée admettre que la Shoah est une césure pour ne pas dire une déchirure dans le comptage du temps dans l’Occident voire dans le monde. Plusieurs choix se présentent alors à nous soit chronologiquement soit thématiquement. Notre objectif est à plus long terme en voulant cibler une large période allant de 1944 à nos jours, de la Libération à nos incertitudes actuelles. Notre questionnement volontairement multidisciplinaire concerne plusieurs pistes de réflexions mêlant chronologie et thèmes.

Cette école doctorale s’adresse aux étudiantes et étudiants inscrit-e-s en doctorat, année préparatoire au doctorat (APD) ou dernière année de master-recherche dans la perspective de préparer un doctorat ; dans toutes les sciences humaines et sociales (sociologie, science politique, géographie, ethnologie, anthropologie, histoire, histoire de l’art, architecture, urbanisme, droit) ; et dont les travaux sont consacrés aux aires géographiques turque, centrasiatique, kurde, ottomane et post-ottomane (méditerranéenne, balkanique ou caucasienne).
