Economy and waqf-habous: possession and circulation of waqf properties in Islamic regions
This seminar on waqf enters into its 3rd year. After having studied daily use of waqf, followed by the subject of networks of individuals connected to waqf in Islamic lands and other religious communities in those regions, in 2012-13, we are studying the economy and waqf. This is important in the sens that economic networks related to waqf reflect and reveal both the vertical and horizonatal depth of the contacts which are established with respect to waqf operations (rent of waqf properties, transfer of those properties, state politics in this respect) and the society in which they function. The documents studied in this seminar (judicial, legislative, literary) coming from Muslim majority regions but also from Europe where waqf is developing (United Kingdom, Austria, USA) will compose the program this year.

History and Philosophy of Physics : The backstages of experiments
Since the 1980s the history and philosophy of science has produced a number of studies about experiments, their aim, styles, intellectual and material components, and multiple disciplinary embedding. Measurement and its instruments have received special attention, as befits the central role they play in any quantitative science. Yet, save for cases in which measurement is the very purpose of experiment or in which it serves to isolate phenomena otherwise lost in noise, measurement processes rarely appear in the publication or in the ulterior discussions of an experiment. The metrological aspects remain in the backstage, for they are believed to be sufficiently shared and codified to elude contestation ; and yet their epistemic, social, and technical functions seem essential. The aim of this year’s seminar is to improve our understanding of these hidden metrological aspects of experiment.

Séminaire Mathematics at Modern Age
The monthly workshop seminar “Early Modern Mathematics” invites researchers to present their work that deal with mathematics and philosophy of mathematics in the early modern period (1500-1750).The texts studied and the claims displayed by the authors are discussed in three-hours meetings. Questions occur during the talk in order to support discussion. Attention is paid to read and comment primary sources. Meetings of “bibliographical seminar” will be devoted to the discussion of a book with its author. The seminar is held in French and in English and is particularly intended for young scholars : Ph.D. and master students.

Powers of the imagination. Historical approaches

The main ambition of the workgroup “Philosophie et Physique” is to combine certain aptitudes in history and philosophy of physics in an attempt to engage issues that may resonate with transversal philosophical research concerning, in particular, the nature of space and time. It seems to us that the twentieth-century transformations of the concept of space-time—which may even be abandoned once quantum theory and general relativity are unified—are fertile ground for such an enterprise. The search for quantum gravity poses technical and conceptual problems ; many physicists feel that such a theory is best developed by re-thinking the foundations of quantum mechanics and general relativity. It is in this spirit that we propose our research seminar, whose purpose is to examine the evolution of the concepts of space and time, from the introduction of Raumzeit by Minkowski in 1907-8 to modern theories (strings, loops, causal sets, non-commutative geometries) which—despite differences—seem to agree, in ways that will have to be clarified, on the disappearance of space-time. -

For a political history of sciences
Issues, methods and questions

This conference intends to provide an overview of the current state of data modeling, generation, and use, and aims to introduce new perspectives on topics in the fields of traditional and computational musicology, music librarianship, and scholarly editing, as well as in the broader area of digital humanities. You are cordially invited to participate in the Music Encoding Conference 2013 – Concepts, Methods, Editions, to be held 22-24 May, 2013, at the Mainz Academy for Literature and Sciences in Mainz, Germany. -

Creating history (2012-2013) - writing and history in the digital age

"People aren't born academic..."
Thinking practices and positioning in the sociology of arts and culture

Multi.Pluri.Trans. Emerging Fields in Educational Ethnography
The conference picks up recent tendencies in ethnographic research that respond to the diversifying social conditions of educational practice by addressing issues such as the translocality and pluricentricity, the multilingual, intercultural as well as multimodal nature of educational realities and the complex relations between local practices and national / global transformations and policies in the fields of education and social work. In different formats of contributions we will present and discuss theoretical and methodological conceptualizations, empirical research findings, as well as questions of research practice and methods. -

Oral history, oral archives and oral memory
What if we added images to sound?
