History of art today - Modus operandi symposium

Artis - Art history institute of the school of arts and humanities, university of Lisbon, promotes the History of art today – Modus operandi symposium, on the occasion of Professor Vítor Serrão’s retirement (b.1952). To the tribute that is due to one of the most influential Portuguese art historians in recent decades, there is also a tribute to another great name in national art history, professor José-Augusto França (1922-2021), celebrating the centenary of his birth. Exponents of their respective generations, master and disciple, both were decisive in consolidating History of art in Portugal as an autonomous discipline in terms of teaching, research and civic intervention. The moment of homage is also a moment of reflection on the importance of Art history today and its role in society.

Geographical Mobility and Cultural Itineraries during the Late Middle Ages

The international congress Geographical Mobility and Cultural Itineraries during the Late Middle Ages (MobGIC) aims to explore the relationship between the geographical routes and itineraries taken by texts, books, artworks, and, in their wake, cultural ideas and tendencies. It will give special consideration to the Occitan-Catalan area as the starting, middle, and final points of these journeys. To investigate this topic, the focus will be on figures who are often left on the margins of study: the intermediaries and agents responsible for the transfer culture.

    The Making of the 1990s

The Genesis of Post-Soviet Society through Its Material Culture

This interdisciplinary colloquium explores the social dynamics of the 1990s through the period’s changing material culture. Everyday “stuff” was transformed by the disappearance of the Soviet system, the irruption of the market, and the opening to the world. The aim is to investigate the long disintegration of the Soviet system by looking at how populations which are caught in a state of uncertainty react with material inventiveness in order to adapt.

Travelling Matters: rereading, reshaping, reusing objects across the Mediterranean

The workshop “Travelling matters: rereading, reshaping, reusing objects across the Mediterranean” intends to tackle objects as sources and subjects of the history of cross-cultural encounters in innovative ways. We intend to discuss a most diverse array of objects flowing in all directions and to concentrate on the “second-handedness” of displaced objects: how and why moving objects acquire new functions and new meanings, and with what consequences for the relations between the communities involved? These perspectives demand a broad chronology, extending from antiquity to the present-day, and for the intersection between different time frames, from the relatively narrow scale of individual objects being displaced across the Mediterranean to the much larger one of the histories of their reinterpretation and repurposing.

    Informal Communication in Occupied Societies

World War II, Postwar Transitions, and the Search for Meaning in Societies at War

Across Europe, World War II gave rise to profoundly altered communicative landscapes. War and occupation devastated established sources of information and public spheres, while in many territories, dictatorial regimes implemented unprecedented degrees of censorship, propaganda, and surveillance to constrict, mold, and (re)direct public opinion. Taking an interdisciplinary, transnational approach, this workshop explores the role of informal communication in different European societies, focusing especially on its relationship to official state communications “from above” and its embeddedness in particular social realities and wartime mentalities “from below.” More broadly, it asks how individuals made sense of an ever-changing, often threating global situation by specific practices of communication and interpretation. The workshop aims to bring together scholars from diverse areas of expertise to explore a variety of questions.

    Understanding Gradients of Political Engagements

Citizenship and Identity in South Asia

Historian and political scientists of South Asia have been dealing with the ascent of postcolonial state and the form of citizenships in South Asia. The meteoric rise of postcolonial theory, subaltern school of historiography to be precise made efforts in bringing the role of ideas and culture in shaping state, community and political narratives. Notwithstanding these insights still this literature failed to bring in one very important thing; a comparative lens to study informal politics in the region. The social transformation and process of democratization has appeared to be inching ahead across the region from Nepal to Bangladesh. Therefore, increasingly a cross country perspective is required combining interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies (qualitative, quantitative) to develop a comparative perspective of way social and cultural factors influence informal politics in South Asia.

Brazil Meeting of the Global Bergsonism Research Project

Based on the pioneering work of Bento Prado Júnior and Franklin Leopoldo e Silva, Bergsonian studies have developed significantly in Brazil over the last twenty years. This includes a thematic diversity that allows a rich dialogue with other scholars around the world. This Webseminar will be an occasion to discuss the potentialities of Bergon’s work, explored in an original way through the diversity of schools and academic backgrounds of all continents. We hope to encourage and foster discussions in a concrete practice of “ouverture” – mental, cultural and social – renewing questions and problematizations around three themes: spirit and life, Bergson and the history of philosophy, Bergson and contemporary philosophy.

    T. S. Eliot in translation

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of The Waste Land’s first publication, the LARCA (Laboratoire de recherches sur les cultures anglophones, UMR CNRS 8225, université de Paris) is very pleased to invite T.S. Eliot scholars, and specialists of Modernism more generally, to share and discuss their (re)assessment of the reception of T. S. Eliot’s works and ideas in the various languages of Europe. We are especially, but not exclusively, interested in probing the role of translation in reception and canonization processes, that is, in the formation and reshaping of literary canons and their effect on the circulation of literary theory.

A primary aim is to give Ukrainian and Russian scholars the opportunity to express themselves and their point of view.

To this end, the workshop will revolve around three themes associated with the surveillance of queer and trans migrations, exercise of surveillance, circumvention of surveillance, and the effects of surveillance.
