    Fortress Europe, Border Lampedusa

Migrations across the Mediterranean Sea in cultural perspective

This book aims to explore political, social, cultural, economic and artistic expressions of, and issues around, Lampedusa as a metaphor of several (visible and invisible) powers that, at different levels (micro, meso and macro), impinges on the relations between Europe and Africa/Asia, etc. The intent is to propose a comprehensive reflection contemplating several approaches and perspectives regarding the relationship of this island as first/last border of the Fortress Europe. Migration is the core topic, but it could be approached with different materials.

    Immigration: Fear and the Media

Magazine Africa e Mediterraneo No. 82

The issue 82 of Africa e Mediterraneo wants to investigate the challenges brought about by media and political communication, considering as focuses of analysis the communication processes within the European society (both of local media and migrants’ initiatives) and those activated in the African Countries, being aware that the circulation of ideas, images and cultural practices is more and more leading to a growing deterritorialization of the media and their messages and to the consequential crossing of national borders.

The Notion of Intelligence in Ancient Greece (nous-noein), from Homer to Platonism

    Vol. 16 Methodos (2016)

The aim of this issue of Methodos is to gather contributions of international scholars on the notion of nous-noein in order to reconstruct the history of the terms related to intelligence and its activities. The issue will mainly try to outline the evolution of such terms, from their original perceptual meaning to their conceptual and theoretical scope. Contributions should thus provide materials and analysis to identify the stages and ruptures in the evolution of their use. Additionally, all attempts to trace the technical and cultural transformations which have allowed the passage from the practical understanding of the nous-noein to its more abstract uses are welcome. Papers should by no means be limited to genetic or historical reconstructions; we also welcome any paper bringing some new elements of reflection on the notion of intelligence in the chosen era.

Symbols and Models of the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean Sea is a milieu in which it is possible to observe, through an interdisciplinary lens, the undertaking of elements defining an idea which conflicts with its immediate sensitive aspect; an idea that arises from life situations and the imaginary world of every man. Nevertheless, it remains a context in which is possible to observe the presence and the constant use of historical symbols, patterns and models of those people inhabiting its shores, as embedded in both the artistic and material production, as well as in the literary one.

Meet the New Gods, Same as the Old Gods? Formulary, Ritual and Status in Hellenistic Ruler Cult

Panel to be held at the Eighth Celtic Conference in Classics

Despite recent and widespread interest in Greek hero and ruler cult, evaluating the processes that lead to the bestowal of cultic honours on Hellenistic sovereigns still remains a controversial matter. Political readings of such honours within the framework of contemporary international diplomacy and euergetic discourse have picked up on polarities widely discussed by previous bibliography, such as "dynastic vs. civic", "living vs. posthumous", etc. Yet the main focus is still limited to a "top-down" perspective, which leaves aside the fascinating dialectics between "private" and "public", or to perhaps phrase this more accurately, between "institutional" and "non-institutional" actors.

Generations and Protests: Legacies, Emergences in the MENA region and the Mediterranean

The recent events in the Middle East, North Africa and elsewhere in the world brought forth the question of youth engagement and the development of new forms of protest (Jeanpierre, 2011). New social media have been regarded as the principal means that federated various groups with opposing interests and represented a novel way to entice and maintain popular mobilizations. While the focus on social media has been discussed and sometimes fiercely criticized, the demonstration of the interconnectedness between different protest “moments” in the long term or on a diachronic axis remains extremely thin if not absent. The aim of this collection is to inquire and problematize the relations that exist between different periods of protest, the type of actors they mobilize and the processes of memory they generate. Although there is no clear line between these periods, we argue that certain kinds of legacies and relations are at play in the configuration of popular protests.

Beyond soft power: The stakes and configurations of the influence of contemporary Turkey in the world

This workshop will explore the theme of Turkish political and cultural influence in the world, exploring scientific debates on the topic of “soft power” and its applicability to contemporary Turkey. This workshop aims at raising several questions: To what extent is the concept of “soft power” adequate to characterize Turkey’s influence and its weaknesses both on the international stage and towards its neighboring countries? Reciprocally, how can the analysis of the different patterns of Turkey’s influence help us question the concept of “soft power”, and to come up with other notions?

At the origins of the Euro-Med Partnership

Europe, the Mediterranean and Italy from the Second Oil Shock to the Barcelona Conference

The Conference will investigate how the 1980-1995 period, often considered a sort of lost time in Euro-Mediterranean relations, prepared this move. In particular, it will focus on major political, socio-economic and human-cultural trends in the Mediterranean region, the main aim being to properly contextualize the establishment of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, to overcome the separation between political-strategic, economic and human-cultural dimensions of regional dynamics and to evaluate the impact that migration flows and policies made on the complex of bilateral and multilateral relations in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
