Celebrating the 220th anniversary of the birth of a Victorian iconoclast
“Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881): His Lives and Afterlives” is the interdisciplinary subject chosen to celebrate the 220th anniversary of the birth of a Victorian iconoclast. The Victorian Conservative Prime Minister is still perceived today as an extraordinary politician who transformed himself, his party and the UK over a long period of time from the 1830’s to his death in 1881. The conference will aim to undercover a number of still unexplored sides of Disraeli and bring him up to date. Both his political and literary talents will be taken into account as well as the long-lasting impact of his heritage (whether mythologised or not).

Museums and industry: Long Histories of Collaboration - Postdoc position
The Laboratoire d’études et de recherche sur le monde anglophone, Aix-Marseille University (AMU), is shortly to commence a major academic research project, “Museums and industry: Long Histories of Collaboration” (MaILHoC). Working with partners in the UK, Spain, and Norway, the aim of the project is to explore the impacts of industrial patronage – with a particular focus on the ethical dimensions of this relationship – on European museums of science and industry in both comparative and historical context. The project will compare insights drawn from a wide spread of historical case studies with a range of contemporary workshops exploring the ethics of industrial patronage. This position is based at AMU’s Humanities Faculty in Aix-en-Provence. The successful candidate will carry out research in archives in France and Britain while also participating in events organised by the various partners.

Retrophilia, Nostalgia, and the End of Pop Culture
The purpose of this publication is to question and re-evaluate Simon Reynold’s 2011 statement that “We live in a pop age gone loco for retro and crazy for commemoration. […] Could it be that the greatest danger to the future of our music culture is … its past?” One decade after Reynolds’s thought-provoking analysis, one may wonder whether this assumption is still relevant today. Can it be extended to other objects of pop culture (films, series, music, video-games, tatoo art, etc.)? In the Post-pandemic age, is pop culture still fixated on its (and our) past? Is this “addiction” to the past a regressive trend or, on the contrary, an opportunity to reassess modern history and re-evaluate its legacy and its representation in popular mass media? In terms of forms and formats, can something “radically new” emerge from nostalgia?

The general aim of the seminar/discussion, is an exchange of information about the different offerings of our various institutions in the field of digital humanities/scholarship training. Particular matters of interest that have been identified are: the curriculum of each course, how it evolved, and why; if there is a particular emphasis for each course (practical, theoretical, &c.); the make-up and background of the student body for each course, and how students are selected; what the prospects and possibilities might be for students going on from the course, in the sense of career directions, and whether trends might be emergent about where they want or are tending to go, once they have finished their course.

Ce séminaire se propose de revisiter le fait colonial britannique tout en questionnant son influence et son empreinte sur les sociétés anciennement coloniales autant que sur la société britannique contemporaine dans une perspective politique, économique et sociale. L’Empire britannique y occupera une place centrale mais pas exclusive puisque les empires coloniaux constituent des ensembles composites et hétérogènes dont la spécificité ne peut être appréhendée que par la comparaison. L’Empire sera donc étudié au sens large pour inclure l’Empire formel et l’Empire informel, les territoires sous administration directe autant que les territoires sous administration indirecte, en passant par les simples réseaux d’influence à l’œuvre du XVIIIe siècle jusqu’à la décolonisation et au-delà, dans le contexte du Commonwealth.

Conviviality and Sociability in the Long Eighteenth Century: Restoration to Romanticism
Christoph Heyl (Univ. Duisburg-Essen) and Rémy Duthille (Univ. Bordeaux-Montaigne) are continuing the long tradition of the Landau-Paris Symposia on the Eighteenth Century, welcoming both established scholars of the field and early career researchers. The symposium focuses on the literature and culture of the British Isles of the period, but it is also open to topics relating to the British colonies, France, Germany, and further afield. The conference will include a panel of emerging scholars who are working on their PhD projects or are planning to begin a PhD project in the near future.

La recherche ou la fuite d’une de ces deux extrémités met en jeu notre rapport aux ressources, au besoin et au désir, et nous invite à réfléchir à la question de la valeur, de la norme, et de l’excès. D’abord une question de survie fondamentale, notre rapport à l’abondance et au manque peut s’observer dans l'organisation de nos sociétés, de la langue, mais aussi dans nos recherches d’une esthétique et d’une expression. Ce colloque proposera une réflexion interdisciplinaire sur ces deux notions dans le monde anglophone.

Cette première école thématique résidentielle du CNRS s’adresse aux chercheurs, enseignants-chercheurs, ingénieurs de recherche et doctorants désirant confronter différents types de savoirs relatifs à la « race », à la couleur et au fait colonial autour de modules de formation et de tables rondes qui porteront sur ces questions dans une perspective comparée, espace francophone, espace anglophone. Dans la mesure où il est souvent reproché à des approches et à des notions dites « anglo-saxonnes » de menacer l’objectivité et, de ce fait, la qualité de la production académique française, cette école thématique part du monde anglophone et veut rassembler des réseaux de chercheurs de disciplines différentes et qui ne se côtoient pas nécessairement.

Session 2 : L’expérience de la visite, du spectateur au critique
Le colloque L’expérience sensorielle dans les expositions d’art au XVIIIe siècle s’inscrit en finalité d’un projet de recherches financé par le conseil de recherche en sciences humaines du Canada (2018-2020) et mené sur la question du corps sensoriel. Il vise ainsi à définir la manière dont l’expérience du corps sensoriel des visiteurs se modèle lors de la visite des expositions d’art temporaires au moment où celles-ci émergent et s’établissent en Europe comme une pratique sociale nouvelle. Cette connaissance devrait permettre de mieux saisir le cheminement et la sensorialité inhérente des visiteurs de musées et de galeries à travers les siècles, et ce, jusqu’à aujourd’hui.

The politics of culture: the first "new left" in Britain (1956-1962)
Intellectual contexts and heritage
La « nouvelle gauche » (New Left) désigne un vaste ensemble de mouvements politiques et de courants d’idées qui émergent d’abord en France et en Angleterre dans les années 1950, puis dans les années 1960 aux États-Unis et dans le reste de l’Europe, ainsi qu’en Amérique du Sud et au Japon. Cet ensemble très divers se caractérise par une forte mobilisation étudiante, un rejet conjoint du stalinisme, du capitalisme consumériste et de leur commun militarisme, et la recherche de nouvelles manières de vivre et de lutter. Cette journée d’étude interdisciplinaire s'intéressera à la « nouvelle gauche » anglaise dans sa première phase (1956-1962) et explorera sa fécondité intellectuelle et son rôle dans l’avènement des cultural studies.

Le vaste conglomérat de principautés territoriales hétéroclites que nous appelons, faute de mieux « l’empire Plantagenêt » est ingouvernable à cause de cette disparité même. Au sein de la maison d’Anjou ou parmi les seigneurs, les révoltes se succèdent. Elles ripostent à un gouvernement plus contraignant que par le passé. Le roi contrôle mieux l’espace, interdisant la construction d’autres châteaux que les siens ; il impose de nouveaux lieux de pouvoir ; il accroît la pression fiscale ; il lève davantage des troupes, souvent mercenaires ; il fait fi des libertés ecclésiastiques jusqu’à fomenter le meurtre de l’archevêque Thomas Becket dans sa cathédrale. Pour triompher, la royauté ne peut se contenter de la seule force physique de ses troupes. Elle doit s’imposer aussi sur les consciences, transformant sa « puissance » brute en « autorité » légitime, acceptée de tous.

Rogues and picaros in medieval and renaissance Spain and England
Within Western literature, the picaresque was quickly perceived as a “historically and geographically delimited tradition” specific to Spain during the Golden Age, a genre apart from the rest, almost without precedent. Going against this common misconception, recent studies have reminded us of the importance of the Apuleian and Lucian origins of this ‘new’ narrative formula. The wily beggar thus seems the prodigal son of the Ancients. Shouldn't we therefore extend the reflection and, at the very least, reconsider the scientific cliché that sees in this character the perfect (dissident) example of the Renaissance hero? Didn't the Middle Ages also contribute to the creation of the cunning rogue?

Ces deux journées vont finaliser le projet de l’UMR LARCA (uiversité de Paris-CNRS) « Faire le point sur les fictions historiques ». Elles seront consacrées à la façon dont la fiction grand public, historique ou pas, représente le passé en y inscrivant de nouveaux discours culturels, politiques, de race et de genre. Ce faisant, ces œuvres illustrent des sujets et groupes laissés en dehors du discours historique officiel, offrent une description du quotidien du passé, et commentent l’évolution contemporaine des sociétés via le prisme du passé.

Les apparitions spectrales pourront être envisagées dans une perspective esthétique, dramatique et/ou scénique, métathéâtrale, métaphorique, socio-culturelle, politique, philosophique, les pistes suggérées n’étant pas exhaustives.

Time at the Turn of the Twentieth Century in American-British Philosophy
Around the turn of the twentieth century, time became a major focus of American-British philosophy. Against a broadly Kantian-Hegelian backdrop, philosophers began developing new questions and theories about time. Shadworth Hodgson argued humans perceive a ‘specious present’, a short duration rather than an infinitesimally small one; this view was further developed by Mary Calkins and William James. J. M. E. McTaggart advanced a new argument for the unreality of time. A. N. Whitehead made time the foundation of his process philosophy. This event brings together philosophers from Europe and North America exploring this period that was to become defining for the contours of twentieth-century English-speaking philosophy of time. The event will deliberately be scheduled to be compatible with European and North American time zones.

The economy of salvation and the challenge of public order
La journée d'étude s'inscrit dans deux projets scientifiques : le premier annuellement à Orléans pour valoriser la recherche en histoire du droit médiéval et le second en partenariat avec d'autres institutions autour de la théologie comme matrice du discours juridique. Il s'agit là d'étudier en lien entre elles la pénitence, notamment au regard des institutions (pénitencerie apostolique, pénitenciers diocésains) et la concomitante « révolution de l'inquisitoire », c'est-à-dire l'apparition d'une nouvelle procédure d'enquête confiée à un juge au service d'une autorité publique en cours d'affirmation. Un nouveau paradigme de vérité se met en place au tournant des XIIe et XIIIe siècles visant à déterminer à la fois la matérialité des faits en cause et les dispositions subjectives de l'individu poursuivi.

Emotions and the management of epidemics in cities of modern and contemporary Europe
Scotland, France, Spain (1500-1900)
Ce projet souhaite consacrer une étude originale à l’histoire de la santé grâce à des regards croisés sur son évolution en France, en Écosse et en Espagne, entre autres, en ciblant des villes de taille et de statut équivalents telles que Versailles, Paris, Marseille, Édimbourg, Glasgow, Madrid et Séville, qui ont connu un développement démographique et économique fulgurant durant cette période. Les métamorphoses sociales de ces villes ont obligé les gouvernements locaux à s’adapter, dans l’urgence tout d’abord, pour garantir la sécurité, la prospérité et l’hygiène communes. Ce fut pour elles l’occasion d’investir et d’innover pour réduire, quand cela était possible, l’impact des épidémies et y opposer une nouvelle perception de la ville : une cité contrôlée, saine et propice au négoce.
