The circulation of popular culture between Ireland and the USA (18th-21st centuries)

The conference seeks to examine the shaping of art history as a discipline during the 19th century in relation to artistic training and exchanges between artists and scholars. The development of art history has been associated with an array of socio-political and economic factors such as the formation of a bourgeois public, the politics of national identity and state legitimacy or the needs of an expanding art market. This conference aspires to explore yet another, less studied dimension: the extent to which the historical study of art was also rooted in an intention to inform contemporary artistic production.

Talking about “Arabs”. Echoes from different Europes
The immigration emergency, the Cologne attacks and other reports on the Arab populations in Europe generate commentaries across the continent. The concentration of unwelcoming attitudes towards Middle Eastern newcomers in Central and Eastern Europe is seen by some as the evidence of “a split of mentalities” between the “old Europe” and its ex-communist states. There is a need, however, to complexify these dichotomies by looking into how concretely knowledge on the Middle East is produced in different European countries. The Oriental Institute in Prague is organizing a workshop on this issue, seeking to investigate the nexus between three different fields of knowledge production and diffusion in today’s Europe: media, academic and policy-making.

Échelles de l'alimentation : une perspective asiatique
The international conference “Scales of the Alimentation: an Asian Perspective” aims at bringing together the French and international scholars of Asia in order to promote a global approach to Asia and to bring together different research institutions based in Europe, therefore to develop the exchanges between different international scholars of Asian societies and experts related to the themes of the food. Our objective is to deliver in-depth analysis and innovative methods arising from research in social and human sciences. We aim to better understand economic, political, institutional, cultural, technological and organizational dynamics of past and present dietary practices in Asia. In particular, we will focus on how the state of food practices and their knowledge is interwoven with other social and technological developments, that are the legacies of expanding and shrinking empires and the mass industrialization.

Encoding Data for Digital Collaboration (ASOR 2016)
Data encoding entails an analog-to-digital conversion in which the characteristics of an object, text, or archaeological site can be represented in a specialized format for computer handling. Once encoded, data can be stored, sorted, and analyzed through a variety of computer-based techniques ranging from specialized data-mining algorithms to user-friendly mobile apps. Especially when encoded data is open-source, researchers around the world can collaborate on the collection, encoding, and analysis of data.

1st International Workshop
Scientists of many different disciplines are involved in the study of relics and kindred artefacts, but till now there was no real forum for these people to exchange ideas and discuss methods. Therefore the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels) is organizing a two-day workshop on the scientific study of relics. During this meeting we want to give analytical scientists, textile specialists, conservators, anthropologists, historical researchers, people involved in 3D reconstruction as well as radiocarbon dating specialists a forum to exchange ideas about relics.

New Academic and Scientific Migrations in the South
The aim of the conference is to explore new international academic patterns. During the last two decades, countries in the South (Asia and the MENA region) have developed their higher education systems and scientific capacity and have become attractors for students and scientists from both the North and the South, presenting a challenge to the traditional "brain drain". In order to better understand those new phenomena, we are looking for contributions exploring empirical case studies about those new migrations.

Crossing the past: Medieval (and Early Modern) Brno and Olomouc in transition
The Summer School "Crossing the past" aims for a discussion about different (national art historical narratives of a specific late medieval corpus in Moravia. It provides the opportunity for young international scholars to meet the material reality of one of the most important medieval centers of the transalpine Europe, often marginalized in research, not only due to the linguistic barrier. The goal of the school is a close and direct examination of the on-site monuments and art objects, and secondly, a critical reflection about the diverse narratives and meta-narratives existing about these monuments.

This call for papers seeks the contributions of inter-, pluri-, poly-disciplinary researchers – ‘undisciplinary’, a term from Edgar Morin (2005). Indeed, we seek the input of the undisciplined: the reflections borne from their respective practices.

Appel à contribution - Histoire
Journal of "Women’s History" , special issue (summer 2017)
For its summer 2017 special issue on documents in women's history, Women's History welcomes articles focusing on what documents have shown about women. The role of historians, witnesses, artists and writers shall also be included, as well as questions related to reality and objectivity in women’s history. Contributions dealing with women as producers of documents are welcome. As an oppressed group, women have indeed seized the opportunity to write their personal and collective history on their own terms, to document their lives and claim their worth against the patriarchal rule. They have produced a wide array of documents, from text to image and film, revealing the reality of female experience. The question of perception and reception is also of interest as it determines what documents tell us about women’s ability to find a place in history through their disruption of dominant cultures.

Semantic Web for Scientific Heritage
SW4SH 2016: Second International Workshop
Classicists and historians are interested in developing textual databases, in order to gather and explore large amounts of primary source materials. For a long time, they mainly focused on text digitization and markup. They only recently decided to try to explore the possibility of transferring some analytical processes they previously thought incompatible with automation to knowledge engineering systems, thus taking advantage of the growing set of tools and techniques based on the languages and standards of the semantic Web, such as linked data, ontologies, and automated reasoning. SW4SH 2016 aims to provide a leading international and interdisciplinary forum for disseminating the latest research in the field of Semantic Web for the preservation and exploitation of our scientific heritage, the study of the history of ideas and their transmission.

Appel à contribution - Épistémologie et méthodes
Transformation, degradation, disappearrance of scientific objects
In philosophy and history of science, the readings investigating the complexity of the abandonment of “scientific objects” are rather rare in comparison with those focusing on the “inventions”, the ‘constructions’ or the “genealogies”. During our meeting, we will specifically draw attention to the process of the “disappearance” of “scientific objects” (in both natural and social sciences).

9th International Research Symposium - Institut Paul Bocuse
The ninth edition of the Institut Paul Bocuse International Research Symposium aims at sharing the ongoing fundamental and applied research on the Social Factors and Cross-cultural Aspects of Culinary and Eating Behaviors and Practices. A series of talks by international scientists from various disciplines will address the most recent scientific advances in the understanding of: i) the social factors of food behaviors and preferences in various populations, ii) the key factors involved in the evolution and spatial diffusion of cross-cultural aspects of food practices and behaviors. The applied perspectives will be considered as well: R&D experts will discuss how they take the social cross-cultural differences into consideration in the development of new food offers or new services to international clients.
