Les villes morcelées : quelles approches alternatives pour la rénovation urbaine ?

Tackling Urban Fragmentation. Alternative Approaches to Urban Regeneration

This one day conference invites researchers working on initiatives aiming at introducing innovative urban regeneration projects in cities across Europe, particularly cities affected by radical re-modellings over the last twenty years. We are looking for instances of administrative traditions being challenged towards exploratory strategies by lobbying groups of architects/designers, or local communities, or even local governments. This conference wants to explore if and how the expertise of uses from inhabitants and field workers in urban regeneration processes may be integrated to learn about possible ways of challenging the emerging patterns of urban fragmentation.

Transforming South-East Asian Cities: a View from the Grassroots

7th EuroSEAS Conference – 7th groupe "Environment, cities and housing", panel 72

Based on empirical approaches, the aim of this panel is to analyze contemporary urban dynamics at the local scale in Southeast Asian cities. In particular we will address mechanisms of urban change, as they can be seen at the neighborhood level. With the ongoing transformations, both in city centers and in the peripheries, are there new forms of urban practices, of resistance? What is the role of the people at the grassroots in such transformations? These interactions can be read from such scales as the home, the street and the neighborhood. From this viewpoint, how can we consider urban oppositional processes, for instance a formal sector to an informal one, public actors to private ones, the authorities to citizens?

1as Jornadas Internacionales de Antropología del conflicto urbano

Deserciones, contra-movimientos y movilidades forzadas en la ciudad contemporánea

The aim of this conference is to make an inventory and to analyze, from different ethnographic approaches, those often invisible phenomena of daily or extraordinary disobedience designed for, or inspired by, a rejection of spatial, economic, political, and social order. However, in order to identify them as mechanisms aimed at denouncing a particular order, we must approach these by looking at concepts that synthesize at once the processes that impose a homogeneous order as well as the practices that challenge it.

    Governing mobilities

    Cosmobilities conference 2012

The Lausanne Cosmobilities Conference focuses on the question of which systems of governance are involved in these processes and how they are evolving as a result of these trends at a time when the future looks less and less like the past. In contrast to mainstream scientific literature and studies on transport and mobility dominated by works on travel and commuting, in this conference we propose to examine the governance of individual and collective actors’ mobility projects. In modern societies, where discourses lauding spatial and social mobility seem prevalent, this conference aims to understand critically how public policies consider the coexistence of different types of mobility projects, and inequalities linked to this diversity.

Regimes of Value in Tourism: Concepts, Politics, Practices

The conference aims to explore different concepts of value that emerge in the social field of tourism. At a general level, we can distinguish here between value as conceptualized by different academic disciplines and value as lived, expressed, and embodied by various actors within tourism as practice and social field. Tourism is often considered a profit generating industry where the utility value paid by tourists is larger than the exchange value of products (in classical terms, the cost of production using labor, capital and land). It is an important element of the conference to discuss conceptions of value in tourism that transcend a strictly economic definition. In this sense we are interested, on the one hand, in the differentiated emotional, moral and ethical cultures by means of which tourists experience attractions and assign value. On the other hand, we wish to explore how various local, regional, national, international, and transnational actors and instances capture, conceptualize and assemble economic, political, cultural, spatial value associated with touristic places.
