Some Case Studies from the Roman and Late Antique Periods
The collection of case studies which were presented in 2018 and 2020 as part of the DANUBIUS project gave rise to a whole series of new historical questions and unexpected results. Some of the main elements of the dossier will be published in a supplement to the Frontière·s journal. The aim of this call for papers is to complete this dossier with some new cases studies, mainly for the regions that were not represented or less represented during the 2018 and 2020 workshops: Britain, Gaul, Germany, Caucasus, North-Eastern Anatolia, the Middle East and Egypt.

Political space in ancient times: representation, description, transformation
This conference aims to develop a reflection on the links between space and politics in ancient times, using an interdisciplinary approach. While archaeologists and historians have been interested in the ways in which space can be a political object, what is missing is a general reflection that would show the contribution of a spatial approach to politics in Classics. To renew our thinking on political space, we will compare the practices of archaeology, whose field of study is resolutely linked to space, and history, whose approach is often more political, with those of literature and philology, which have also seized on space as a methodological tool.

The Young Scholars Circle of the HAEMUS (YSCH) International Research Network is pleased to invite you to its first International Online Seminar for PhD students and Postdocs: What Means Late Antiquity in the Balkans? New Concepts, Historiographies and Case Studies for the Period between the 3rd and the 8th Centuries. This first edition of the YSCH online seminar aims to stimulate a discussion that, relying on the most recent studies, can contribute to specifying the definition of the concept of “Late Antiquity” for the Balkan Peninsula.

Revue Volumen
Volumen est une revue de vulgarisation scientifique éditée depuis 2008 par l’Association d’étude antique néo-louvaniste (ASBL) Roma. Publiée en français, au rythme d’une fois par an, la revue internationale souhaite favoriser la diffusion des travaux qui traitent de manière novatrice des civilisations antiques et de leurs rapports. Volumen s’adresse à un public diversifié, composé de spécialistes et de non spécialistes ; pour cela, les articles doivent être rédigés dans une langue à la fois précise et soignée mais accessible aux lecteurs non spécialisés. Le prochain numéro de la revue annuelle Volumen sera consacré aux jeux, jouets et sports durant l’Antiquité. Une section « Varia » complètera ce numéro.

La revue Antiquitas qui est à son troisième numéro a pour vocation de permettre une large diffusion des savoirs savants et profanes sur l’Afrique profonde en privilégiant la longue durée et d’assurer une plus grande proximité entre l’Afrique et l’Occident européen par un passage au tamis de tout ce qui fonde leur existence. Elle offre une tribune de réflexion ouverte à la période de l’Antiquité et du Moyen Âge pour explorer les dynamiques culturelles, religieuses, politiques, artistiques, économiques, sociales, sans pour autant écarter les approches comparatives.

L’appel du large (rencontre finale) : vie et sociétés portuaires
Le projet « L’appel du large » a été initié en 2019 par les enseignants-chercheurs spécialistes d’histoire ancienne du « Centre de recherche et d’études ‘Histoire et sociétés’ » (CREHS) de l’université d’Artois. Il consiste, d’une manière générale, à explorer les interactions entre les sociétés humaines et ces espaces particuliers que sont les mers et les fleuves, en donnant une place à part entière aux embouchures et deltas, qui constituent des interfaces et des environnements remarquables. Cette rencontre clôt la série commencée en 2019, en portant l’attention sur les ports et les sociétés portuaires.

The international interdisciplinary conference “Landscapes and Sanctuaries. The rediscovery of cult places in the Aegean Basin and in Southern Italy”, focuses on the study of landscapes and the rediscovery of sanctuaries in Southern Italy and Greece between the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries. It invites to cross archaeological and historical approaches to understand the link between sanctuaries and landscapes, but also the way these data have conditioned the rediscovery of lost archaeological sites.

29th EAA Annual Meeting
From the 4th century BC onwards, the expansion of the Roman Empire, eventually, over large parts of Europe had a significant impact on society. The creation of a new transport network and the emergence of cities were two of the most important and lasting changes brought about. As Rome expanded and developed contacts with other cultures far beyond the Mediterranean, new tastes and social practices were also acquired, often manifested in material culture. This session aims to explore Roman commerce and economy through different lines of evidence (e.g. archaeobiological remains, ceramics, inscriptions, landscape archaeology etc.). In addition, it aims to investigate the role of the ancient transport network in the process of urbanisation and/or the acquisition of new ‘tastes’.

Après un premier numéro consacré aux pratiques d’écriture en cours de langues anciennes, le second numéro de la revue de pédagogie des langues anciennes comportera un dossier thématique intitulé « langues anciennes et langues vivantes ». Il est également possible de proposer des contributions sur d’autres sujets qui prendront place dans une section intitulée Varia. Il s’agira dans ce numéro de faire non seulement un état des lieux des différents points de contact entre langues anciennes et langues vivantes étrangères, mais aussi d’en observer les bénéfices pour l’élève aujourd’hui - et pour l’adulte qu’il sera demain.

La citation et la fabrique de l’Antiquité dans les éditions des textes classiques : analyse et exploration numérique
À la faveur des numérisations croissantes, de nombreux paratextes du XVIe siècle sont désormais accessibles. Ce colloque propose de les explorer sous l’angle de la citation. À la croisée des recherches menées au sein de l’ANR IThAC sur l’invention du théâtre antique, qui porte sur le corpus des paratextes aux éditions des auteurs dramatiques anciens à la Renaissance et leur exploitation numérique, et de l’axe du laboratoire HiSoMA dédié aux cultures anciennes et les temporalités, qui s’intéresse à la mémoire et la réception des cultures anciennes, ce colloque se propose de réfléchir, sans s’y limiter, aux thématiques suivantes : Qu’entend-on exactement par « citation » ? Quel texte cite-t-on ? Comment cite-t-on ? Pourquoi cite-on ? Comment et selon quelles modalités se fabrique la mémoire citationnelle ? Quel est l’apport méthodologique des humanités numériques à l’exploration des pratiques citationnelles dans les paratextes grecs et latins de la Renaissance ?

Animals in Greek, Arabic, and Latin Philosophy
Under the aegis of the European Research Council (ERC) funded project “Animals in Philosophy of the Islamic World,” a conference will be held at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, on the topic of Animals in Greek, Arabic, and Latin Philosophy. We welcome proposals for papers on any topic relevant to animals and philosophy in ancient Greek and Roman and medieval (Byzantine, Islamic, or Latin Christian) philosophy. Relevant topics could include, but are not limited to, Aristotelian zoology and its reception, theories of animal soul and cognition, views on how animals should be treated, and ideas about animals in medicine and other sciences.

The expressive wealth of dialogue presents itself in numerous artistic and intellectual ways. The encounters between emotional and aesthetic resources, pedagogical and didactic purposes, as well as between claims of objectivity and scientific rigor, are fertile ground for the transdisciplinary inquiry characteristic of classical studies. This invites a diversity and multiplicity of perspectives for contributions in relation to ancient authors and their works. Investigating the history of dialogue since Antiquity also allows us to consider it as an archetype for the exchange of opinions and ideas. This is suitable for dealing with current problems that increasingly require the willingness to negotiate and rethink ideas and convictions, empathize with the feelings of others, and build agreements based on the examination of opposing arguments and points of view.

Le présent appel concerne une rencontre scientifique conçue comme la troisième édition d’un congrès des jeunes républicanistes du monde romain. L’objectif de ces rencontres régulières est de renforcer les liens institutionnels et scientifiques entre les membres d’un réseau principalement composé de chercheuses et chercheurs travaillant en France, mais amené aussi à s’ouvrir ponctuellement, en fonction des thématiques abordées, à des collègues étrangers. Promouvant le renouveau des problématiques et des approches sur la République romaine, le congrès entend par ailleurs donner également la parole aux plus jeunes chercheuses et chercheurs, de manière à mettre en lumière des travaux récents ou en cours, qui peinent souvent à trouver un espace d’expression.

Antiquities of Middle-earth
This workshop, which will take place on June 4, 2022 in Paris, aims to study the notion of Antiquity(ies) in the work of J. R. R. Tolkien. The event is open to specialists in literature, antiquity or reception of antiquity, insofar as the aim is to reflect on the existence of ancient periods in Tolkien's legends which could present points of convergence with Greco-Roman antiquity in the broad sense, as the author could conceive it in particular.
