This one-day symposium for PhD students and early-career researchers aims to reflect on the French fantasies of North American authors and, conversely, on the North American fantasies of their French receptors and intermediaries. Participants are encouraged to think about the ways in which misunderstandings shaped the transatlantic literary relations which developed between North America and France from the 18th century up to the present days. The symposium hopes to foster discussions about these misunderstandings along three lines of investigation : that of literary criticism, with a focus on the emergence of a ‘fantasy of France’ in the works of North American authors (and on the disenchantments and surprises that go hand in hand with fantasies) ; that of the French reception of these same writers ; and, finally, that of translation.

Iconoclasm, Reenactments, and Alternative Commemorations in the United States since 2000
As demonstrated by Wendy Bellion’s scholarship, iconoclasm lies at the foundation of the United States. Yet Bellion also shows us that, rather than being sealed in the past, iconoclastic projects continue into the present. Iconoclastic destruction invariably entails creation—whether it is the construction of new monuments to replace the toppled ones, or the coalescence of a new community, movement, or nation. This conference seeks to bring together scholars interested in monuments and their destruction, public history and public art, historical reenactments, memory studies, and artistic practices across diverse media. We invite papers that evaluate recent commemorative projects, examine acts of iconoclasm and their aftermath, and study or propose novel approaches to representing historic events.

Programme de formation de l’école doctorale de l’université Bordeaux Montaigne
Cette journée d’étude propose de dialoguer autour des réflexions sur les motivations du voyage et de l’exil de figures féminines des Amériques durant les XXe et XXIe siècles. L’intérêt qui nous motive réside dans la volonté de diffuser leur vie et leur œuvre pour faire reconnaître l’importance de ces contributions. Notre intention est de dédier une attention particulière aux figures féminines originaires des Amériques et aux étrangères qui se sont installées sur ce continent au cours des deux derniers siècles et qui ont laissé des témoignages et des traces qui contribuent aujourd’hui à donner un regard différent de l’histoire.

« Dans l’espace personne ne vous entend crier », l’accroche publicitaire, devenue iconique, du film Alien de Ridley Scott souligne le rôle prépondérant joué par les « voix, sons, bruits, silences » en science-fiction. Pour Nis Gron, « William Whittington a démontré combien Alien (1979) a été un tremplin essentiel qui a montré l’importance et a permis le développement de la bande sonore, notamment dans l’utilisation expressionniste des effets sonores, des sons ambiants et des bruitages dans les films de science-fiction ». La science-fiction joue avec les complexités et les contradictions des « sons et silences » à travers les bandes sonores et au sein des intrigues.

Retrophilia, Nostalgia, and the End of Pop Culture
The purpose of this publication is to question and re-evaluate Simon Reynold’s 2011 statement that “We live in a pop age gone loco for retro and crazy for commemoration. […] Could it be that the greatest danger to the future of our music culture is … its past?” One decade after Reynolds’s thought-provoking analysis, one may wonder whether this assumption is still relevant today. Can it be extended to other objects of pop culture (films, series, music, video-games, tatoo art, etc.)? In the Post-pandemic age, is pop culture still fixated on its (and our) past? Is this “addiction” to the past a regressive trend or, on the contrary, an opportunity to reassess modern history and re-evaluate its legacy and its representation in popular mass media? In terms of forms and formats, can something “radically new” emerge from nostalgia?

Mémoire(s) et politique dans les Amériques : enjeux, mobilisations, conflits
« Cahiers du MIMMOC. Mémoire(s), identité(s), marginalité(s) dans le monde occidental contemporain »
Ce dossier des Cahiers du MIMMOC (Mémoire(s), identité(s), marginalité(s) dans le monde occidental contemporain) vise à étudier les résonances actuelles ou récentes des pages sombres de l’histoire dans la vie publique des États du continent américain. Par son approche transaméricaine, il mettra notamment l’accent sur les effets contemporains de processus tels que la colonisation, la destruction ou la fragilisation des peuples autochtones, l’esclavage, les discriminations anciennes ou plus récentes, et de leur (non-) mémorialisation / patrimonialisation, sur la vie politique des États concernés. En adoptant une perspective résolument interdisciplinaire et mêlant études de cas ciblées et comparatisme, ce dossier vise enfin à observer les phénomènes de circulation des politiques en lien avec la/les mémoire(s) ou la diffusion des réponses à ces politiques, en révélant les effets de mimétisme entre les pays des Amériques mais aussi en identifiant les caractéristiques propres à chaque société.

The aim of this study day will be to highlight the efforts made by these women to rise to their position, in the world of work or arts, and to examine the circumstances which allowed their ascent. at last, we will ponder on the nature and dynamic of the link which unites them.

Le cinquante-quatrième congrès de l’Association française d’études américaines portera sur le thème des « Voix, sons, bruits, silences ». Physiques ou métaphoriques, les bruits, les sons, les voix et les silences se glissent au creux de nos oreilles ou résonnent dans l’espace public ; ils se déploient au cinéma et dans les séries, dans les arts, la littérature et la musique, dans les espaces urbains et ruraux, dans les mouvements sociaux, les communautés religieuses, les institutions politiques et les médias. Ils traversent le temps et constituent des archives. Les voix sont narratives, politiques, chantées, transcrites, déformées, amplifiées, imitées, reprises, plurielles et singulières. Class, Race and Place in the US South
American Politics through the Lens of Michael Goldfield’s Work
Recent events in the United States remind us to what extent the South is both a place of distinctive identities and a space sharing a common heritage. According to the political scientist Michael Goldfield, “The South is a distinctive, atypical part of the United States; it is also, however, America writ large”" (Goldfield, 2020). These specificities are inscribed in social, cultural, political and, according to the author, above all economic structures, in a configuration that makes any definition of the “South” problematic. For this conference, we propose three different angles of approach: the interaction between race, class and capital; the spatial dimension of these interactions; the causes for and the perpetuation of racism in the United States.

Non-Binary Black Representations in Post-Obama Popular Cultures
The election of Barack Obama to the American presidency has ushered in a so-called “post-racial” era. This phenomenon is spreading to all popular media, from television and its hit series to comics and video games. It is from this observation of representations of black identities, which question any form of binarity and operate intersectional deployments within African American popular cultures, that the main question at the origin of this project emerges. Based on papers about these representations in the popular arts, accessible to a large majority as well as within the Black American community, this one-day conference aims to examine the evolution of these representations over the past ten years and the obvious efforts to move away from the binary normative representations still attributed to U.S. racial minorities—more so than to the so-called dominant white majority.

Culture visuelle du geste efficace et danses de société (1910-1940)
Cette journée s’intéressera à l’iconographie des manuels de danse de société, diagrammes, photographies, et tentera de comprendre comment certains choix graphiques et leurs évolutions relèvent d’une culture visuelle du geste efficace qui infuse la société de l’entre-deux-guerres, en Amérique comme en Europe. La presse recourt très fréquemment aux désignations « danses mathématiques », « danses scientifiques ». Une nouvelle forme de réduction en art s’impose alors : on vante la possibilité d’unifier les pas, mais la standardisation et la notation permettent aussi de faire valoir un droit d’auteur, de diffuser des manuels et de normaliser des pratiques souvent jugées trop libres. L’iconographie des manuels de danse de société de l’entre-deux-guerres montre alors un usage exponentiel de diagrammes, certains témoignant d’une recherche technique et esthétique qui tendent à faire disparaître la représentation du corps pour ne conserver que la trace, l’empreinte du geste efficace.

Historical destinies as the foundation of legitimacy
The biographical genre in pop cultural studies
The biographical genre has place of pride in Hollywood and in popular culture in general, understandably so: it brings together the pseudo-legitimacy of the period film and the widespread appetite for tales of remarkable destinies. Biographies can be found in films and series of course, and in traditional or graphic novels , but also in music , stage musicals , and even video game.Rewriting and romanticizing are cornerstones of the genre. They are a way for biographical fictions to turn historical facts into narratives that will be both accessible to the general public and bankable. This raises the question: who is pictured and, to some extent, mythologized, in biographical fiction? The issue of the lack of representation also comes to mind: are there any categories of people whose biographies are not fictionalized, or have only become an object of fiction recently?

Stratégies de légitimation et postures d’autorité », cet atelier interroge la façon dont les récits autobiographiques, qu’il s’agisse d’ouvrages publiés sous la forme d’autobiographies à proprement parler, de mémoires, de témoignages, de journaux, ou de textes mis en ligne, permettent à leur auteur·rice d’asseoir ou de consolider une légitimité, voire de rétablir une autorité mise à mal, que cela soit dans l’espace des mouvements sociaux ou dans la sphère politique institutionnalisée, aux États-Unis.

The American State with and after Trump: (il)legitimate Institutions and Political Process(es)
The AFEA (Association française d’études américaines) Annual Conference invites us to reflect on the theme of “Legitimacy, Authority, Canons” in 2022. This workshop is therefore open to contributions on the political, administrative, and institutional record of the Trump presidency, and its legacy on the authority and legitimacy of his successor Joe Biden. In particular, we invite work on the evolution of public policy, institutions, political mobilizations, and political experimentation at all scales of U.S. federalism to discuss the consequences of Donald Trump’s presidency on the American political development.
