The Young Scholars Circle of the HAEMUS (YSCH) International Research Network is pleased to invite you to its first International Online Seminar for PhD students and Postdocs: What Means Late Antiquity in the Balkans? New Concepts, Historiographies and Case Studies for the Period between the 3rd and the 8th Centuries. This first edition of the YSCH online seminar aims to stimulate a discussion that, relying on the most recent studies, can contribute to specifying the definition of the concept of “Late Antiquity” for the Balkan Peninsula.

From the Grand Tour to Orient-Express: curiosity, exploration, sociability
In this colloquium, we propose to study how the travelers crossing the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, between the “Grand Tour en Orient” and the Orient-Express, were able to apprehend these countries, their inhabitants, and their past. Our aim is to explore the social representations of travelers, as well as those of the populations they visited. Without limiting ourselves to reproducing the classic schemes for understanding these discourses, indebted to Edward Saïd, we shall historicize, contextualize and define these ambivalent perceptions according to the geopolitical considerations, ideological orientations, and personal affinities of those who produced these discourses.

Patterns of Miscommunication in Contemporary East-Central European Cinema
We would like to invite scholars from the fields of film, media and communication studies, but also of linguistics, literary studies, political studies, anthropology, etc., to a joint reflection on East-Central European contemporary cinema. Much of East-Central European cinema after 1989 seems to thematize the issue of communicational barriers. If we posit, with Casetti, that films are sites of production and circulation of discourses, which can be interpreted as symbolic constructions referring to a cluster of meanings conveyed by a specific society at a moment of its existence, then what are the meanings transmitted by this cinematic reflection on communication blockage? What are the main cinematic discourses developed around miscommunication issues? To what extent do they create a common imaginary for this part of Europe?

Settlements of Religious Minorities in Exile (16th-18th centuries)
The monographic issue will deal with the settlements of religious minorities in their Mediterranean places of exile during the Early Modern Period. We intend to draw on two thematic issues: a colonization project, spontaneous or planned, not necessarily successful, but a testing ground of social coexistence between denizens of different origins which offers opportunities for the visibility of migrants, despite religious divergences; the mechanisms of negotiation between refugees and local authorities that favor settlements in urban or rural settings. The case studies that we are looking for will tie different religious ethnic groups (Christians, Jews, and Muslims, at least), geographic spaces (with the idea of a broad Mediterranean), and centuries (16th-18th).

Éditer en exil en temps de régimes autoritaires en Europe médiane (1918-1989)
À l’occasion de cette journée, il s’agira d’appréhender l’Europe médiane entre 1918 et 1989, à la fois comme lieu de départ de dissidents à des régimes autoritaires s’exilant ailleurs dans le monde et lieu d’accueil pour certaines éditions d’exil. L’attention se portera avant tout sur l’expérience liée à la création de maisons d’éditions dans ces différents contextes. De Paris à New-York, de Berlin à Rome, en passant par des villes comme Prague ou Bucarest, ce phénomène éditorial constitue un objet d’étude en soi, ainsi qu’un observatoire privilégié pour mieux cerner les différentes dissidences ainsi exprimées. Une place particulière est occupée au sein de ce corpus par l’édition allophone, autrement dit, les publications dans des langues autres que celles établies / reconnues comme officielles et / ou minoritaires dans l’espace où elles voient le jour.

Around the Archive: Productions, Itineraries, and Social Practices
7th Graduate Student Workshop of Center for Turkish, Ottoman, Balkan, and Central Asian Studies (CETOBaC)
This day will focus on the issues of production, use, and circulation of primary sources in our research areas. It will allow each participant to present their work, reflect collectively, discuss how we collect, produce, and classify our archives, and deal with their interpretation. It will also question the processes of archiving and the dynamics of conservation, patrimonialization, and destruction of archives as sociopolitical issues. Finally, by taking advantage of the diversity of the cultural areas studied, we will reflect on the transmission and circulation of sources in their temporal and spatial backgrounds.

De la curiosité humaniste à l’esprit de système
L’évolution du paradigme des savoirs dans les régions situées entre la mer Adriatique et les Alpes aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles
Dès la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle, on assiste en Carniole et dans les provinces voisines, la Styrie et la Carinthie, qui sont des aires de contact entre plusieurs langues et plusieurs cultures à un changement des paradigmes culturels et mentaux ainsi qu’à une exploitation plus systématique du territoire. Les élites sociales se tournent vers les savoirs scientifiques et techniques que favorisent les Lumières européennes, notamment la minéralogie, métallurgie, chimie, zoologie, botanique, agronomie, médecine, linguistique. Ce colloque interrogera la multiplicité des pratiques culturelles liées à la circulation, la transmission et l’adaptation des savoirs scientifiques, techniques et artistiques qui animent les sociétés urbaines des régions slovènes, aux confins des duchés méridionaux des Habsbourg, de la République de Venise et des Provinces Illyriennes, tout au long du siècle qui va de l’avènement au trône de Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche (1740) jusqu’au Compromis austro-hongrois de 1867.

Special issue on Cinema, Architecture and Urban Space in the Balkans
The special issue is intended to discuss Balkan urban space and architecture through a cinematic perspective, and further explore elements linking urban studies with film studies. We are particularly interested in contributions discussing fiction films or documentaries focused on specific urban spaces of the Balkans, significant constructions, major cities or lesser-known towns and villages. We are also interested in itinerary films that map the peninsula through their passage from different built environments.

Si de nombreux travaux sur les questions de représentations des femmes ont déjà été produits, ce numéro s’intéressera sur la capacité d’agir des femmes artistes et autrices que ce soit dans leurs productions artistiques ou dans leurs modes d’organisation féministe dans les champs littéraires et artistiques. Qu’en est-il de l’engagement littéraire et artistique des femmes pour leurs droits et/ou dans le cadre de mouvements féministes ? Quelles sont les spécificités de ces formes d’engagement artistique dans les pays des Balkans ?

Longtemps considérée comme périphérique, l’Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, – espace hétérogène possédant néanmoins certaines dynamiques propres bien identifiables – a progressivement retrouvé sa place dans une historiographie dynamique et renouvelée grâce aux apports de l’histoire transnationale, globale ou connectée. Le premier volet de ce futur rendez-vous pluriannuel intitulé « Les lieux du politique en Europe centrale, orientale et balkanique, 1790-1990 » sera consacré aux lieux institutionnels.

The Fourth Conference in Balkan Studies
Connected Balkans
The Fourth Conference in Balkan Studies, organized by the French Association of Balkan Studies (AFEBalk), will be held at the MuCEM in Marseille between June 30 and July 2, 2022. This conference aims to pursue the work carried out during previous meetings and to bring together the driving forces of research on the Balkans around a transversal theme. This year, the theme “connected Balkans” will allow a general conference in area studies open to all relevant disciplines of the Humanities and Social Sciences. It encourages critical reflection on regional approaches and on the organization of knowledge, by engaging both with comparative and multi-scaled analysis.

The historicity of democracy in the Arab and Islamic world
L’objectif principal du volume est de fournir une interprétation actualisée des phénomènes de négociation, de délibération, de représentation, de débat, de recherche de consensus, d’élection, de nomination, d’expression d’idées et d’opinions, ou de construction de formes de sphères publiques dans les mondes arabe et musulman du Moyen Âge à nos jours. Dans le contexte historiographique d’études ayant critiqué la persistance de formes d’orientalisme et de nouvel orientalisme dans les débats sur la démocratie dans la région, le volume, tout en refusant de discuter uniquement de la capacité des sociétés à accommoder ou non des institutions et des pratiques démocratiques perçues comme externes, se concentrera délibérément sur l’étude de ces sociétés pour elles-mêmes et des formes politiques qui leur étaient inhérentes. L’objectif est de retracer, d’explorer et d’interpréter, sur la base de sources originales (archives, manuscrits), les pratiques qui existaient dans la grande région, sans les réduire à de simples échos ou importations.

17th international Slav studies conference
Le XVIIe congrès international des slavistes se tiendra à Paris, au Centre Malesherbes de Sorbonne Université du 28 août au 1er septembre 2023. Ce congrès, qui réunit tous les cinq ans les slavistes du monde entier — spécialistes de langue, littérature, histoire, — s’est tenu pour la première fois à Prague en 1929. C’est la première fois dans son histoire qu’il se réunira dans un pays non-slave, l’année même du centenaire de l’Institut d’études slaves.

Freedom and Death in the Greek Revolution of 1821
Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and Balkan areas
In 2021, during the 200th anniversary of the proclamation of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Department of History and Archeology will hold another international conference on "Freedom and Death in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and the Balkan area". The conference will address issues of Greek historiography, such as the Modern Greek Enlightenment in Epirus, Souli, and the networks of Souliotes; operations in Epirus; the battles of Peta, Philhellenes, Plaka, and Kompoti; Lord Byron on Epirus; the strategies of Ali Pasha; the Epirotic networks in Moldovlachia; and the lives and deaths of revolutionaries. Using modern methodological tools and a microhistory approach to conduct systematic research of both new and old archives, the conference will offer original and interesting approaches to an already rich discussion.

Italy and Yugoslavia in the Interwar Period
Monographic issue of “Qualestoria. Rivista di storia contemporanea”
The signing of the Treaty of Rapallo in 1920 made it possible to find a solution to the Italian-Yugoslav dispute over the north-eastern Adriatic border, a solution that would last substantially until the Italian invasion of the neighbouring kingdom in World War 2. Relations between Italy and Yugoslavia, particularly since the end of the 1920s, with the beginning of the more decidedly revisionist phase of fascist foreign policy regarding the structures of the Danubian-Balkan area, were never easy. However, the signing of the Treaty of Rapallo represented an undoubtedly important moment, which greatly contributed to restore a climate of collaboration between the two countries, heavily jeopardized by border nationalism and by the D’Annunzio’s “impresa di Fiume”, interrupted precisely by the Treaty of Rapallo.

Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

Cette journée d'études est destinée à tou·te·s les doctorant·e·s travaillant sur l'ensemble des espaces couverts par les recherches du laboratoire, des Balkans à l'Asie centrale, en passant par les territoires de l'ex-empire ottoman et l'Iran, et ce à toutes les périodes et dans toutes les disciplines. En tant que concept polymorphe, la frontière renvoie autant à l’idée de fermeture et de délimitation qu’à celle de zone de passage et d’espace de rencontre et d’échange. Elle est tout à la fois un objet physiquement inscrit dans l’espace, un élément qui circonscrit les territoires et la propriété ; une construction sociale, une manière de bâtir un rapport à l’altérité ; et un point dans le temps, un événement ou processus qui divise le passé du présent et du futur.

Historiography of the Perception of Islam through Manuscripts, Korans and their Displacement
The aim of this workshop is to approach the question of the relationship between Christianity and Islam through the study of the production, circulation and uses of Arabic manuscripts, and mainly Korans, in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean Europe. Our assumption is that the Balkans, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula form an axis of circulation which is especially significant for our understanding of the Mediterranean Sea as a comprehensive space of cultural, political and religious contact.
