Alternative Cultural Globalization: from East Asia to Europe

Without denying the contribution of the American model, which’s mastery in the field of pop culture has been emulated, the objective of this colloquium is to bring to light the alternative represented by East Asia, by spotlighting both the common features and the specificities of countries located in this geographical area, compared to Western countries. For example, if Hallyu was greatly inspired by the Japanese cultural industry, South Korea was nevertheless able to develop quite quickly its own strategies for the production and circulation of its products.

    Rethinking Liberal Europe

Ideas of Europe and Notions of Freedom between 1848 and 1945

The aim of this conference is to shed new light on the ways in which concepts of freedom and ideas of Europe have interreacted between 1848 and 1945. While recent research into the history of European ideas for this period has focused on anti-liberal thinking, we emphasise that in the era of nationalism the idea of a Europe founded on freedom played an important role in the political and cultural debates. In doing so, we also want to rethink the link between Europe and liberal democracy in general as well as analyse its political implications for current debates. Scholars interested in participating are invited to consider their research with regards to how ideas of and discourses about freedom, however understood, (re)shaped notions such as “Europe”, “European”, “European civilization” etc. within historical and philosophical works, novels, works of art, treatises, speeches, propaganda material, and so on.

Commercial Centres in Post-War Cities. Questioning Rearrangement of the Urban Landscape and the Society

    IGU congress - Paris 2022

From the Battle of Baghdad in 1258 to the late Syrian Civil Conflict, wars always were outstanding occurrences for urban landscape changes by making physical destructions and population change. Certainly the acceleration in urban development and reconstruction in order to catch up the period of conflict, chaos and recession affects the urban landscape. An element of importance on which we would like to focus when questioning urban landscapes in post-war cities is the commercial centre, a representative urban object of our current consumption society.

Digitalisation and creation of alternative monetary and financial spaces

This workshop proposes to explore the intersection between digitalisation and alternative monetary spaces developed in response to the sustainable development objectives. The Covid 19 pandemic has accentuated the challenges posed by digitalisation and highlighted its contradictory characteristics. On the one hand, the phenomenon allows, thanks to its technical potential, the valorization of local initiatives; on the other hand, it can favor forms of dehumanization and predation, likely to undermine the collective trust on which these spaces are based. The workshop proposed to address the contradictory nature of digitalisation processes from the perspective of their potential to strenghten and/or challenge economic and social cohesion.

    The Completion of Eurasia?

Continental logistical convergence or regional diplomatic dissent?

The present state in the construction of Eurasia is proving a challenge for analysts. Given the fast pace of this construction, from a Europe Asia Meeting (ASEM) since 1996 to a Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) since 2015 (a Eurasian Economic Community was formed in the 1990s) and now the more applied cross-continental Land New Silk Road since the same key period, 2013-2015 (Ukraine’s crisis and US/NATO announced withdrawal from Afghanistan), it seems that diplomatic decisions and interstate practical schemes exceed the capacity of observers to conceptualise quickly enough what is happening. Yet, all the while, Eurasia is experiencing a mix of centripetal evolutions at its peripheries, and a launch of its centrifugal potentials from the core of Eurasia : Russia and Central Asia.

    Doing family Online

(In)formal knowledge circulation, information seeking practices and support communities

Individuals and families are increasingly reliant on information and communication technologies for their daily needs, activities, and socialization. Apart from rapid push to Internet-based communication brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, all levels of government have been ‘dematerializing’ administrative procedures for some time. Couples, parents, children, and other family members use the Internet to navigate certain formalities and get access to practical information regarding, for example, heath care, schooling, or marriage. This multidisciplinary special issue of Family Relations examines the role of the Web as a human and bureaucratic-legal support tool for “doing family” and providing services for families around the world.

Les dimensions transnationales de l’activisme dans la culture contemporaine du livre

Mémoires du livre / Studies in Book Culture, vol. 26-2, automne 2022

    Who is a Refugee?

Concepts of Exile, Refuge, and Asylum, c. 1750–1850

The Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, signed at Geneva on 28 July 1951, defined who is eligible for and what constitutes asylum for refugees under international law. Its universal expansion in 1967 remains the cornerstone for today’s global refugee regime, which has shaped the legal definition of the refugee and rights to asylum for over fifty years. Well before the second half of the twentieth century, however, the term refugee and related concepts were used, debated, shaped and mobilized by a variety of historical actors and state authorities in different regions of the world. And despite being inscribed in international law, refugee status and asylum remain contested and politicized, and continue to apply unevenly to people fleeing violence and oppression. This workshop seeks to build upon the emerging field of refugee history by focusing on the transition and overlap between early modern and modern periods.

Assist and Unify? Nation Building and Welfare in the Upper Adriatic and Eastern Baltic Sea Region in the 20th Century

Monographic issue of «Qualestoria. Rivista di storia contemporanea»

Questioning the primacy of the nation-state, a special issue of Qualestoria to be published in December 2022 aims to analyze how different welfare practices have represented a tool of nation-building in territories contested by various national groups or states. To what extent have different political contexts affected the use of welfare for nation-building purposes? What role have welfare practices played in strengthening the position of the titular nation or in attempting to integrate/assimilate minorities? What outcomes have “bottom-up” initiatives propelled? The special issue will try answer these questions with a focus on the eastern Baltic Sea region and the Upper Adriatic. Contributions related to other east central European areas will also be considered.

Centenary of the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation (1922-2022)

The centenary of the creation of the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation (ICIC) is an opportunity for historians to step back and examine the achievements but also the limitations of this enterprise, its lack of diversity and cultural representativeness. In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in this field of research, in parallel with a renewed interest in the League of Nations as a whole, in a context of doubts about the capacity of multilateral institutions. Without attempting to cover all the areas that remain to be studied in relation to intellectual cooperation and soft power diplomacy in the interwar period, such an event therefore seems to be a useful place of exchange at the crossroads between the archives, teaching and research communities. To do this, the scientific committee invites participants to reflect in particular on the renewal of our methods: whether it is about new approaches or the use of innovative digital tools, the aim of this conference is not only to look at the past but also to inspire future research.

Reinventing Public Space in Business Improvement Districts

Over the last two decades, public space renewal in downtown Detroit has undergone phases of experiments in response to emerging phenomena that put pressure on existing governance models. The introduction of business improvement districts (BIDs) has been key in creating an armature for diversifying the principle urban actors and financing sources involved in public space renewal and creation. Through presentations and lightning talks the symposium will share knowledge and discuss best practices and innovative ideas for central public space governance, programming, and design within business improvement districts/zones/areas.

Social sciences and Humanities: between constant/static and changing/change

This forum represents a process of developing the field of social sciences and humanities, as it is a gathering of disciplines and addresses an important problem in scientific research, which is the way the researcher sees the curricula used in this field with its different specializations (political sciences, international relations, economics, law, media and communication, Sociology, psychology, history, geography, archaeology, anthropology, literature, linguistics, sports sciences), and what they represent in terms of relativity according to the background of the vision, subjectivity and objectivity of the researcher, and the extent to which he is able to explain the theoretical framework of different phenomena since they depend on the complexity of In terms of understanding, analyzing and interpreting the phenomenon, and in terms of intertwining between disciplines, one phenomenon is cross-disciplinary and overlaps between them.

    In_Visibilities

    Issue 13 of On_Culture (Summer 2022)

The editorial team of On_Culture, would like to draw your attention to the call for abstracts for issue #13 of On_Culture (Summer 2022) on “In_Visibilities”. This On_Culture issue will approach questions of in_visibility from a power-analytical and ideology-critical perspective. Avoiding a binary opposition, visibility and invisibility are conceptualized as two mutually entangled concepts. By using the underscore in the orthography (in_visibility), we want to highlight the processual continuum between the two concepts and create a space for ambiguities that put the visibility concept under re-negotiation.
