    Metamorphosis in the Arts (c.500-c.1700)

This Special Issue considers the phenomenon of metamorphosis within oral traditions, literary genres, and the visual and theatrical arts dating from approximately 500 to 1700. Contributors are invited to submit articles examining the role of metaphysical transformation within the interplay of contexts—social, sacred, geographical, political, economic, and intellectual—in which they originated, were re-imagined, and/or developed across time.

Archaeologies of the Virtual. Attractions, Senses, Narratives

Even though it is often presented as an unprecedented technology, virtual reality (VR) is a new medium as much as it is an old one and an imaginary one. On the one hand, if the first VR experiments date from the 1960s, virtual technologies have been long foreshadowed by intermedia fictional worlds, that still nourish the imaginary texture of VR and even seem to dictate the agenda of its concretisation – as in the case of the Metaverse metaphor originated in the 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. On the other hand, virtual interfaces have been anticipated by the virtualization of visuality, that took shape during the 19th century in dispositifs like the panorama and the diorama, and have been prefigured by the multifarious attempts to realise the immersion of the spectator, which can be traced back to the most ancient forms of human art. This issue aims to investigate the present state of the art of virtual technologies against the background of recent and past cinema and media history and theory, by drawing on a threefold articulation.

Indigenous art today: critical perspectives and crossing viewpoints

The notion of indigenous art today is more controversial than ever. Even though it constitutes a vindication and legitimization tool for the native peoples, its demand continues to reproduce a nineteenth-century distinction between Indigenous and civilized, primitive and modern, Western and the no-Western. Such distinctions provided the grounds on which several academic disciplines were formed, and based on their differences, they also forged diverging theoretical, methodological, and practical paths. Today, the multiple narratives on art aspire to coexist rather than compete, from the logic that fosters multivocality and plurality of discourses whatever their origins or inclinations are. We welcome all those who wish to participate to reflect on the possibilities for encounter and dialogue in the study of aesthetic manifestations and forms of expression that have not necessarily been perceived as “artistic” and that, until now, have been mainly the object of interest of the anthropological and archaeological disciplines.

    The Materiality of Modernisms

Within the framework of intertwining multiple approaches to the material and medial dimensions through which modernisms have been – and are being – studied, the conference will also offer an opportunity to revisit through this angle three events whose 100th  anniversary takes place in 2022. The publication of Joyce’s Ulysses, the organization of The Week of  Modern Art in São Paulo and the premiére of the Triadisches Ballett by Oskar Schlemmer, can be in fact set as clear examples of a broader and heterogeneous «discourse of the legitimation of change» (Osborne 2013), that only much later became known as “Modernism”. Round tables with guests and experts will be dedicated to these three topics as part of the conference program.

Artistic Confluences in the Iberoamerican culture (1600-1850). The world of Robert C. Smith (1912-1975)

This year marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Robert C. Smith (1912-1975), the North American art historian who devoted much of his academic life to the study of Ibero-American art and culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. To mark this event the International Conference “Artistic Confluences in Ibero-American Culture. The world of Robert C. Smith (1912-1975)” was launched. This congress aims to revisit the themes of Robert Smith’s work, expanding its dimension in an interdisciplinary and contemporary context. His published and unpublished work currently constitutes a scientifically relevant legacy for the research that is developed around the chosen theme. Reflecting on and problematizing his legacy, inserting it in the broader field of Iberoamerican cultural studies, recovering minor themes and objects in the light of the new art historiography and projecting new paths for its study and dissemination are the broad objectives of this international event.

    Short Fiction as World Literature

In Death of a Discipline, Gayatri Spivak mentions the problematic identification of “literature” with the novel form in comparative literature (2005: 123). Her concern with our general blindness to non-hegemonic forms recalls the consternation frequently shown in short fiction criticism toward the enduring novel-centrism of literary studies. This conference aims to bring together scholars with an interest in examining this tension and the different ways in which it may extend to the field of world literature.

History of art today - Modus operandi symposium

Artis - Art history institute of the school of arts and humanities, university of Lisbon, promotes the History of art today – Modus operandi symposium, on the occasion of Professor Vítor Serrão’s retirement (b.1952). To the tribute that is due to one of the most influential Portuguese art historians in recent decades, there is also a tribute to another great name in national art history, professor José-Augusto França (1922-2021), celebrating the centenary of his birth. Exponents of their respective generations, master and disciple, both were decisive in consolidating History of art in Portugal as an autonomous discipline in terms of teaching, research and civic intervention. The moment of homage is also a moment of reflection on the importance of Art history today and its role in society.

Geographical Mobility and Cultural Itineraris during the Late Miggle Ages

This congress seeks to take an interdisciplinary approach to a specific aspect of geographical and cultural mobility during the Late Middle Ages: the relationship between the geographical routes and itineraries taken by texts, books, artworks, and, in their wake, cultural ideas and tendencies. It will give special consideration to the Occitan-Catalan area as the starting, middle, and final points of these journeys. To investigate this topic, the focus will be on figures who are often left on the margins of study: the intermediaries and agents responsible for the transfer culture. Oral accounts, music, written texts, and artworks were all physically and intellectually transported by agents who were often under the cover of anonymity; this includes scribes, translators, minstrels, cantors, artists, and patrons or promoters, but also other figures such as pilgrims, students, clerks, diplomats, and merchants. These all played a fundamental role in developing, disseminating, and circulating ideas, and encouraged cultural and intellectual mobility in Europe.
