Artisanal Transport and Urban Mobility: Spaces and Present Issues

Compared to the centralized and planned forms of transport, artisanal transport is little discussed by the social sciences. However, it represents a major component of the transports systems in developing cities. The aim of this study day is to bring together graduate students (Master or PhD candidates) and experienced researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in social sciences and transports studies (anthropology, economy, geography, urban studies, history, sociology,…) to discuss the dynamics of artisanal transport in various contexts.

Dairy products in Medieval and post-medieval Mediterranean countries: production, trade, consumption

Contrasting with the Prehistory for which the question of the beginning of the consumption of dairy products is of critical importance, few studies are devoted to the production and consumption of these products during medieval and post-medieval periods. However, dairy products, especially cheese, are key components of the Mediterranean diet. Sometimes disregarded, sometimes recommended by dieticians, the latter are traded both at local and international scale. Therefore it seems necessary to organize a workshop on "Dairy products in Medieval and post-medieval Mediterranean countries: production, trade, consumption".

Alcohol use in rituals and ethnographers

    The religious uses of alcohol

This special issue will deal with two aspects of ritualistic alcohol use. The articles will not focus on certain areas and will not only address the religious framework of alcohol use, intoxication, and symbolism, but also the methodological approach and the place of the ethnographer on the fieldwork. The first aspect deals with the drinks and with the “drinking” in their symbolic and social functions as observed by various researchers with field experience. The second aspect deals with both the study of postures and the gathering of data in a reflexive approach on ritualistic alcohol use.

    Naval Arsenals (c. 1600-c. 2000)

Historians have been conscious of the major importance of arsenals and for some time now have been interested in these establishments, for to study the arsenal is to understand the preparation made for war, a common and transversal thread of naval historiography. This unit also lends itself to "total history", that is simultaneously economic, social, financial, technological, industrial, geographical, strategic, maritime ... Naval arsenals are therefore well known and the study of them has mostly been carried out within the framework of major theses, each institution having found "its" historian.

    Music-Records-Radio in French-Speaking Countries (1900-1950)

In the space of a few decades, from 1900 to 1950, musicians’ and listeners’ relationship to music was transformed with the advent of records and then the radio. The conference seeks to provide researchers an opportunity to explore collectively the relationship between music, records, and the radio by examining the following issues: the interactions between different forms of media and intermedial transfer; the ways in which composers and performers adapted to the new means of dissemination; and the social, economic, and aesthetic consequences on musical activity with the arrival of records and the radio. Restricting the context to French-speaking countries will make it possible to establish comparisons as well as connections between various record “markets” and the radio networks that developed during the period.

The rural Renaissance from one century to the next?

Rural study days 2016 - 25 years of rural dynamics

The clothing of politics: dress, appearances and political identities (XIXth-XXth centuries)

Journal "Contemporanea. Rivista di storia dell'800 e del 900"

Fashion and clothing, a crucial aspect of social life, has aroused strong interest in recent years in many different fields of the social and human sciences. After a long period of neglect, many historians have begun to develop new approaches to the experience of dress as a situated bodily practice and as a form of language, always allusive and polysemic. The special issue of Contemporanea aims to engage in a reflection on the relationship between clothing and politics in the widest sense of the term, analyzing how “appearances” can express, perform and negotiate political, ideological, and national identities.

    Epistemologies of plurality

    Revue « Sociétés plurielles » n°2

This issue seeks to understand how the different humanities and social sciences approach the question of "plurality” in societies. Using what material, what types of source? With what concepts, paradigms, tools and methods of analysis? Confronting the contributions that the disciplines represented in this issue make will make it possible to identify the bridges that might be established between the different fields of research, and how these may mutually enrich one another.

    Politicising, depoliticising and repoliticising

The non-human: what role for growing old today?

    The Flesh and the Word

Cultural History of the Body – Discourse, Representation, and Epistemology (19th, 20th, and 21st centuries)

The body is saturated with, perhaps even structured around, a number of paradoxes and tensions which shape as much as they reveal our relationship to the world – private and public, inside and outside, known and unknown, visible and invisible, ours and other, etc. Both material and imaginary, the body as it is perceived and felt, by ourselves and/or by others, is a construct with complex origins. Tackling this complexity raises as many difficulties as opportunities.

Immigration in the Electoral Rhetoric of the Americas

While immigration has always been an important issue in the election debates, the current centrality of this topic invite us to question its rhetoric power (evocative terms, objectives pursued, instrumental efficiency…). Beyond the political scenes of Canada and United States (main arenas), will also be considered critical readings of electoral experiences in the Latin-American political world. This workshop will aim to shed the light on this matter in order to question (through politics, sociology, economics, law, history…) the reminiscence of what seems to be a modern form of identity resurgence in a specific framework: the electoral arena campaign, a real national trajectory catalyst.

The ambivalence of the Social State

Adhoc session 01 of the Association internationale de sociologues de langue française (AISLF) conference 2016

Rethinking the Mediterranean History and Historiography issues in the Eastern Mediterranean

History - Histories of the Mediterranean / Story - Stories in the Mediterranean

The Doctoral Workshop History - Histories of the Mediterranean / Story - Stories in the Mediterranean offers an international framework for exchange and discussion of analytical and methodological issues on the Mediterranean. The aim is to question how researchers engage in a multifaceted approach of the Mediterranean, as a historical and geographical entity, as an object of historiography, and/or as an analytical category. From Braudel’s Mediterranean to the Mediterranean of P. Horden and N. Purcell, discussion has always focused on the long or short

In search of the Balkans: Between Europe and the Mediterranean?

This conference will follow the “Balkan studies: state of knowledge and lines of research” meeting organized by the French Association of Balkan studies (AFEBALK) in Paris in November 2002. The objective of this new meeting is to provide an overview of the current state of research concerning this region through the perspective of the multiple ways of practicing social sciences here. Nearly fifteen years after the previous meeting, a new milestone in the contemporary Balkan studies in France has to be set. Numerous issues valid then (minorities, conflicts, borders, interfaith co-existence etc.), which often contributed to characterizing the Balkans as a “separate” space in Europe, have now given way to new perspectives, new challenges and new research practices.

    The neighbor and the stranger

International conference on E. Levinas thought

“Clash of Cultures”? Confrontation, Collusion and Cooperation in Wartime since 1870
