Languages in European University Alliances: challenges and issues

Les langues dans les universités européennes : défis et enjeux

Abstract

Strategic partnerships across the EU between higher education institutions encouraged the emergence of European Universities, a key driver for improving the quality of Higher Education and strengthening links with the European research and innovation landscape, but also with society and the economy. Which will be the role of languages in University Alliances’ strategies for interdisciplinary and intercultural approaches, maintaining different contextual linguistic, rhetorical, and disciplinary traditions? Will multilingualism be enhanced, and with what perspectives? The CEL/ELC (European Language Council) Forum intends to bring together contributions, experiences, and reflections on the role of languages in HELP (Language Policy in Higher Education), on strategies for their valorisation, on intercomprehension practices, on methodologies and actions to promote plurilingualism.

Announcement

University of Sevilla, 1st-2nd of December 2022

Argument

Strategic partnerships across the EU between higher education institutions encouraged the emergence of European Universities, “consisting in bottom-up networks of universities across the EU which will enable students to obtain a degree by combining studies in several EU countries and contribute to the international competitiveness of European universities” (https://education.ec.europa.eu/education-levels/higher-education/european-universitiesinitiative). That is why the European Universities Initiative is one of the flagship programmes of the European Union to build a European Education Area, co-developed by higher education institutions, student organisations, Member States, and the European Commission.

European Universities are transnational alliances that will become the universities of the future, promoting European values and identity, and revolutionising the quality and competitiveness of European Higher Education. European universities will be a key driver for improving the quality of Higher Education and strengthening links with the European research and innovation landscape, but also with society and the economy. By 2025, each alliance will have defined a common, long-term strategy for education, research, and innovation, involving a high level of integration in cooperation between its members.

This initiative will achieve an unprecedented level of cooperation between higher education institutions in Europe, at all levels of organisation and in all fields of activity (education, research, and innovation). Most alliances have a transdisciplinary approach. These alliances do not have a dominant theme and focus on cross-cutting issues for joint work, for example on themes such as education and citizenship, digital technology, the environment, societal transformations, or health; other alliances focus on a specialisation.

  • In this overall scenario, what role will languages play?
  • Which new frameworks must be designed (and by who) for science communication, for knowledge transfer and multilingual needs?
  • Which new language policies must be conceived and implemented?
  • Which will be the role of languages in University Alliances’ strategies for interdisciplinary and intercultural approaches, maintaining different contextual linguistic, rhetorical, and disciplinary traditions?
  • Will multilingualism be enhanced, and with what perspectives?

The CEL/ELC Forum intends to bring together contributions, experiences, and reflections on the role of languages in HELP, on strategies for their valorisation, on intercomprehension practices, on methodologies and actions to promote plurilingualism.

We therefore invite ELC members and non-members, who participate through their universities in these alliances, to submit contributions on the topic.
